The Joker, Fly Like An Eagle, and Book of Dreams are all such GREAT albums. Steve is one of the best songwriters ever imo. Non musicians don't often realize writing short catchy tunes like jet airliner or take the money and run is HARD. FLAE was a long jam out tune when Steve first wrote it, and when it came time to put it on record, he refined it and refined it like the artist he is. It woulda been ALOT easier to keep it as a long epic tune like it is live.
Holy crap....I have loved this guy since my now exhusband played "Dear Mary" for me when I was 19 years old....He is the musician that played the soundtrack of my life....Commericial? NOT. A poet, a musician a human being of the first kind. The East Coast adores Stevie 'guitar' Miller...(ps - my Mother is a Doctor as well!!!)
like stones, beatles, berry, hendrix, sprinsteen, turner and and and... His latest two albums(bingo & let your hair down) are soooo coool - listen them & have a good time...
"Sugar Babe" off his Joker LP...serious Southern Rock, before Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet or .38 Special got out of high school. To this day, I get a thrill listening to his guitar playing in layers on it. He's as good a producer as he is a songwriter/performer.
Steve Miller is just another example of the kind of musician which the music industry is starving for today. There's got to be at least one young musician in the world today who tries to measure up to Steve Miller - as much as the Beatles, the Stones, Zeppelin, the Who, Chicago, Tina Turner, Aerosmit, Pink Floyd and many others. We do need new versions of them, not just cover bands playing their songs.
Steve is a Rock Star and that's why he isn't in that so called Rock Hall of Fame. Look at the inductees for this year like Neil Diamond ,not putting Neil down, a talented man he is, but Rock n Roll Hall of Fame ?
@SIMONP1965 You are right my friend! How the hell have they passed him by all these years!? The Hollies were just inducted (and I like them), but are you going to compare their body of work to Steve's?
Is Steve Miller a rock star? ABSOLUTELY!!! Pay attention to this guy kids if you want to make it in the music biz. Learn to write simple, catchy tunes that everyone can sing along with. That's been Steve's formula for success and even though he hasn't had a hit in a couple of decades, the mailbox money is still coming in because those songs are STILL getting played...
I have enormous respect for a guy who put out such great work and remained true to himself. He's a great artist who crossed over and avoided celebrity trapping. Way to go Steve - you rule!
At least he admits people do not want to hear is new stuff. I wish other artists would do the same and stop trying to beat us over the head with junk.
Lets face it, at some point you dry up. To even be a one hit wonder is amazing. These guys have at least 10 great songs which is not easy to do. People can't write an infinite about of great music unless you are Paul McCartney.
I think he is a rare down to earth rock star not a jerk that thinks he is the best or gods gift to the ladies.
i would agree and since i am a HUGE steve miller fan, i actually appreciate the songs onalbums that not a whole lot of people know that should: like "Mercury Blues" from FLAE which really shows his blues side.
his new stuff, even if people don't like it and like going back to the hits, should still be worth listening if you're a big SM fan.
PS. Iwent to a McCartney concert and everytime that he did a recent song, a lot of people walked out. That really disgusted me and SM thinks that too. Wow!
Not all Paul McCartney stuff is good but he still manages a good song or two on every album. I really liked Paul's last few videos.
Ringo's last album was surprisingly good believe or not.
I saw David Gilmour (from Pink Floyd) at Radio City Music hall and it was like you are describing. We paid $1000 per ticket and so did many others in front of us in rows 1,2, and 3. When he said he was playing is WHOLE new album first everyone took off. Way to disrespect a legend I though.
Flashback to this reporter's youth.....She was probably listening to shallow-ass Top 40 radio.....like so many teenage girls have always done -- and continue to do. That's why she couldn't name Fly Like an Eagle. Let's face it -- at the risk of sounding sexist -- a woman with a taste and deep knowledge of classic rock is to be appreciated because they are rare.
Doesn't know "fly like an eagle." I'm almost speechless. omdfg, she's a dingbat. Obviously she must have been assigned this piece. Which means she's only gonna know things about him that can be looked up. Wish they'd gotten a fan.
Wow she doesn't even know the intro to Fly Like An Eagle...wish I could've interviewed him instead of her. I saw him at the St. Augustine Amphitheater in 2008, amazing show. I even have an original Fly Like An Eagle album on my wall my mom gave me.
Every Miller fan should catch this interview. Nice inside view--one of the few at that time in the 60's who knew how to play the game with the execs, and won. Hey, Stevie--Florida has some nice ranch land too, and it's warmer than Idaho! Fav album--Brave New World. Hope his health holds up and he can tour for a long time.
Hell yeah he's a rock star, screw the rock and roll hall of fame, after all the sex pistols did call the hall of fame a "piss stain" and look at half the people inducted, they arent even true rock n rollers.
The Joker was the first single I ever bought back in 73 when I was a small kid at Gemco. I then discovered the full lp and went back and bought that too. He was an inspiration for sure. He's a rock star in the eyes of real musicians and I think that's what really matters to a fellow musician. Thanks Steve.
i'd like to say something funny and quirky, but the moment got taken away when i saw he didnt win a grammy or is in the RnR hall of fame. How does that work? 25years of performing? Metallica is getting in next year, (love 'em). does anyone know why he isnt in? thanks for the post, Joker's Joker. Love the clear drumkit. always always.

My guess for the riff is "My Dark Hour"--a couple of years earlier--with the great Paul Ramon!
