Because they figure that once they have your attention, they may as well remind you of how terrible smoking is.

My grandmother died from smoking cigarettes (COPD which lead to emphysema) and my grandfather is dying from heart disease. My mother also has COPD because of years of smoking. This is why I do not and will never smoke. It is hard dealing with all the pain associated with this. Now I worry because my mother smoked with my sisters & I in the car as well as my children when I wasn't around : (
