I never had a problem on my 10Mb fiber line back in California or my 80Mb fiber line here in Wyoming and I'm consoderably farther from the nearest data cemter now. never more than 50ms ping that i can tell.
I couldn't play with that delay, the OnLive version is consistently 200-800ms behind. It would be okay for some games, RTS, turn based rpgs... but for anything competetive and response based like FPS... it would be too much.
@ZeroX252 Not sure what you're referring to but it plays great, no latency that I can feel. And if you look I at the Homefront footage I get some pretty awesome kills.
@Saieno86 Did you test this on MicroConsole or PC/Mac? There is a difference actually. Lag and video compression is better on MC. I'd say much better.
@CyberMcRock except that Onlive has to compress it's signal to fit the bandwidth of streaming via the net. Even when internet traffic is low, artifacting occurs. High motion also cuases the resolution to blur. PC's and consoles don't have that issue. You get what you get with a PC or a console. The look of Onlive is directly proportional to how much data you can receive. I have a 15Mbps connection and STILL get artifacting with Onlive. Its only useful if you just don't have a game system.
It seems to me that the PC is still the winner on most games. OnLive seems to actually be at proper/full settings on Tomb Raider, but you can tell on Deus Ex that they aren't pushing the settings at all. Lighting, shadows, AA and texture details.
@recruittons What are you squaking about you ignorant fool? You do not own any game, please read the EULA that comes with every piece of software be it physical or digital. I'm also not sure which pricing you're looking at, as playpack subscribers have 30% off of everything including games, hardware, sales, etc. All pre-orders for brand new games end up starting at $35.
@Saieno86 Well, let's say I buy the physical disc of a game. Now I have that. Let's see some company walk into my house to take that away Onlive just has to lose the right to stream it. Also, NOT EVERYONE uses the playpack. You can buy the content for full price if you don't want to pay a monthly fee! Also, way to make a point by first jumping into insults instead of making a reasoned response. For future reference, people tend to ignore further statements from people who lead with an insult.
@recruittons Technically they can whether you'd like them to or not, only reason they don't is its obviously too much of a bother to matter. And if you're a user on OnLive and you're buying games but aren't a subscriber to the playpack, you're losing money plain and simple. And if you don't want someone to call you an ignorant fool, don't make comments that make you look like one. Plain and simple.
@Saieno86 Pardon, but you're posts are just as opinion based as anything I've written. You say that their service ISN'T draconian. Opinion. You say that the OnLive is an amazing investment of time and money? Opinion. I've used as many facts as you have, a roughly 50/50 split of what has been said. If you love OnLive, have a blast! I'm sure you'll love it up until the next big thing comes out! The IDEA OnLive brings to the table is incredible. But I'm not pleased with the execution, thus far.
@recruittons I say their service isn't draconian since it is similar to other services out there. OnLive's prices are much lower than else where and does not require any specialized hardware or operating system. These are facts, if you disagree with them then thats fine, however don't assume that I think OnLive is perfect and my system of choice. I have a gaming PC, I have a PS3, and OnLive is an interesting service, and I actually AGREE with you that I'm not pleased with the execution either.
But the fact that you compare it to those services and find none draconian IS your opinion. You can't say that one way is opinion and the other isn't. The prices, I admit, with playpack discount, are very fair. Good even! But, to me, it feels like I'm gambling on the service at that point, since I have no way to recouping those costs or keeping the content I've paid to use. One thing that would draw me back into their service would be for the option to locally store any content I pay for.
@Saieno86 If I were able to download AND stream games I buy the PayPass for I would be an OnLive FAN. That would, also, put them in very direct competition with Steam. A LOT of gamers would pay out the nose for the ability to play their games, not only locally when bought, but also via streaming audio/video.
@recruittons Well they have been including OnLive PlayPass Codes into the physical copies of the games (Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC Version was the first example). And it's not like OnLive is a dying company by any means. On September 22nd they released in the UK with an overwhelming response. Development continues on the service and it gets better and better each week, with many more features and games to come. They also upgrade the hardware every 6 months, so its a system you only buy once.
@Saieno86 I do hope they do well. If they can show the world how Cloud gaming is the future, maybe we can see some great competition emerge before too long. I hate having to upgrade consoles/computers every few years and the idea of having cheap and easy access to top flight games is awesome, but I suppose I'm too skittish to give myself over to something so new that I could end up losing. This is why I'm not an early adopter, I like waiting for proven and polished. Also... Rift rules...
@Saieno86 Also, I own the micro-console, which I got for free, I got a few games I bought for 3-4 dollars a piece, and I was a playpack subscriber (The cancellation and credit card policies they use are draconian, I.E. you can't take a payment method off without putting a new one on and if you cancel, you lose the rest of the month you've paid for if it's before your renewal date). I was dissatisfied with their EULA and, after getting some cheap games, I stopped. If they cut those games, no loss
@recruittons How is their policy any different than GameFlys? It's the standard payment policy used every where, I have no idea why you're suggesting its draconian....try not to over-exaggerate cause those that actually know what you're talking about won't take anything you say seriously.
@Saieno86 Not every subscription service regards their subscription as ended the moment you ask to opt out of renewal. Look at the majority of MMOs. If you cancel your subscription, you still get the time you've paid for. If I pay for 1 month, I get a month, whether i want the next or not. I'm not exaggerating anything. And I was a playpack subscriber when I paid for my games. Also, don't use the word "bought". You haven't "bought' anything. You've paid them to use a game they host.
@recruittons Okay if not every subscription service regards their subscriptions as ended the moment you opt out then why assume that OnLive should do it the way you would like? If you pay for 1 month you'll get the whole month, its up to you to cancel it before the next month. Also nice to see you have a thesaurus handy, since you seem to like reading please to read the EULA of every physical or digital copy of a game you 'paid' for then please. You have bought nothing but a license.
@Saieno86 I don't assume that OnLive SHOULD do anything, however, I regard that particular policy as being less customer friendly as I hope in this day and age. So many companies have these systems set up and they really only end up hurting the consumer. If OnLive were to regard these policies with a greater emphasis on the end-users happiness, more people would be willing to take chances. Also, point of fact, I HAVE read all of my EULAs. I happen to like being informed. And with regards to...
@Saieno86 my physical games, there really isn't a chance they are going to come to my home and take the disc from my games shelf. And as for digital copies? I only download from Steam, and I keep backups of all of my downloaded games, as is my right, according to the EULA. If Steam stops selling, I still have my game. OnLive? I have no such option. It's all in their hands. My experience, as a user, is completely in their control. I don't trust companies that much.
@Saieno86 By the way, over-exaggerate is a tautology. Exaggeration already implies the fact that the person has gone beyond reality. Adding "over-" to it doesn't make it any more effective a descriptive term. Anyway. Feel free to give them your money. But if they add the service subscription fee, like they hold the right to do at any moment (That fee being in addition to the playpack subscription), then have fun paying for the right to pay for the right to play the games you've paid for.
@recruittons Yay with the thesaurus again! That's the whole point of the phrase 'over-exaggeration', as in you've gone above and beyond exaggerating. Understand? Also, they put whatever they can in their EULA/TOS to cover their asses in case things don't go as planned, that simple. You can check out Steam's EULA and TOS as well, compare them if you'd like. However, I'm not interested in your speculations or assumptions, just look at the service as it is and play some demos if you want.
@Saieno86 As I said, I've played the games, I have the console and I dislike the service, as it stands. If they change their policies, make things more acceptable in terms of their licenses, I'm more than happy to change sides. It's not like I want them to fail, but I want them to understand that the user experience needs to come first. Whether it's from a customer's standpoint, a player's or whatever! Their EULA isn't something I want to deal with when their company is so new.
@Saieno86 If the company becomes proven, doesn't shit on it's customers and keeps their games open for those who purchase them, I don't have a problem. But I am not willing to give up my working, physical games for something that isn't tested, and could, potentially, equate to throwing my money away.
@recruittons And that's very understandable. I had the benefit of chatting with Steve Perlman, CEO of OnLive, and they have no plans of taking any games off the service, ever. The disclaimer is for legal reasons, like when TV ads show "Footage not included with purchase". I've also seen OnLive as one of the nicest and most generous to their customers, and I mainly buy games on there to support the technology and company.
@Saieno86 See, I had 1 problem with them, and it soured my experience. I had the Playpack, but I was going to discontinue mine before renewal. They renewed it on me a few days before it said. I was scheduled for October 1st. It renewed September 23rd. I contacted them immediately and it took a full day of emails and live-chats to get a refund for a month of service I had never used. That 1 negative experience has left a bad taste in my mouth.
@recruittons That is one of the issues I've noted as well, but thats because they are too small for their user base. They used to have phone support but had to put it on hold until they could figure out how many people they need to hire to control the new influx of users. When they eventually do get to my support questions though, they usually go above and beyond my expectations. I know that I've had my Rift subscription charged 7 days early, and its mainly because of new bank rules.
@Saieno86 Honestly, I truly hope they do well, because, like many, I see Cloud gaming as the future of the industry. However, I'm just reticent to give myself over to this new technology until I can know it's working right. But the idea of this company showing the industry how great and profitable the cloud can be will definitely generate interesting competition, which is what I love to see in new technology. Here's hoping something great comes of OnLive's willingness to innovate.

@Saieno86 Also, another thing that turned me off, which I really hope they fix, is that you can't remove your payment method from your account. This is a little bit of a pet peeve of mine. Some people don't mind, but if I give out my credit card, I trust they will let me remove it from their site as well, for security reasons. I would LOVE it if they allowed me that option.

@dingumfCallofDuty Do you understand what resolution is? And yes, Call of Duty and World of Warcraft both sell/sold a ton, doesn't mean they are good games. I'll let you know when 25 Million people all kill themselves so you can join them.
@dingumfCallofDuty It seems to be a reasonable computer to me. Not the biggest and most expensive one out there, but totally sufficient to run any modern game reasonably well.
I still say you should update this and the other vid and put the resolution for each system in the vid so ppl know why onlive looks a lil thick. Running in 720p will remove a lot of detail like you can see at 6:09
Onlive and PS3 are pretty much identical here, except I give a slight edge to PS3 on Mafia 2 but an edge to Onlive with Homefront. The DirectX11 in Deus Ex is completely unneeded though, it makes practically no difference in the graphics of that game at all.
@downphoenix Lemme ask ya, did you notice the frame rate drops on PS3 during Mafia 2? PC and OnLive for Mafia 2 are pretty much on par, same with Homefront. PS3 and OnLive are similar for Deus Ex and Lara Croft, but really PS3 has the best performance and load times though maybe not the best graphics.
The only thing I really noticed a drastic difference in was the lighting between the PC and OnLive versions. It looks like the PC was running the games in directx11, while OnLive uses directx9 still I'm pretty sure. Frame for frame though OnLive's cost give it the win IMO. Nice video, definitely different!
I never had a problem on my 10Mb fiber line back in California or my 80Mb fiber line here in Wyoming and I'm consoderably farther from the nearest data cemter now. never more than 50ms ping that i can tell.

Great comparison, thank you.

OnLive's main visual downfall (other than obviously being exclusively 720p for now) is that look of a film being applied over it.
Not all games are as effected by it, and I think some kind of contrast adjustment in the software could fix this.
Overall, I'm loving how I can actually game on this Macbook.
I don't think the point of OnLive is to beat anything at rendering games, just bring them to whatever device you do use.
