@villy27 Bellof was disqualified due to the FIA wanting the Tyrrells out of the way, believing the combination of DFVs and young chargers was making a mockery of the shiny manufacturer-friendly F1 they were trying to create. The microcarbon traces were only found at Detroit, but the FIA removed all their results.
Possibly, but I don't have enough information to make an educated guess. He flew through ladder series like Formula Ford and F3, he was bloody fast at the end of this race, he won Porsche the World SportsCar Manufacturers title in 1984, and he set the lap record on the old Nordschliefe, so he would have been a big winner in F1. World Champion? Hard to say; not enough seat time in a competent F1 car to clearly answer that. Some F3000 or BF3 Champs have surprisingly done diddly-squat in F1.
@alkoolikus1001 For a few laps Bellof was faster than Senna, but the Brazilian over thw whole race was better. Look, after ten laps or so, Belof was only two or three seconds behind Senna, then the brazilian opened a big gap...
Thank You for this classic race. It was a shame see how Mansell collide in Monaco when we has a clear leader of the race. At this moment he was the fastest man in the race with 1'55".112s until Senna goes faster and faster...
I was going to put something about the definiton of genius being the difference between Mansell crashing out and Senna storming through, before I remembered Ayrton's mistake here four years later with a massive lead in his McLaren. It's ironic that he came to prominence in F1 at this race and then it would be 10 years exactly when he'd be no longer be there.
@schopfheim91 - Agreed, there was absolutely no reason for him to try pulling away from Prost at that rate, especially as Prost wasn't particularly fussed about winning. Typical Alain wet drive, just going as fast as he felt was safe and keeping out of everyone's way, it just happened that Prost on autopilot was faster and smoother than everyone bar Senna and Bellof...

Murray Walker absolute cock! Worst commentator ever. Then came Brundle to take the crown as most biased, self absorbed know it all. I miss Hunt.

Thanks for posting this race. Great memories of Murray and James. This is the first time I have heard them for 16 years!

You're right, sad finish to Bellof in Spa 1985.

Great job mate (as we say in Australia!) For this clip, great race too, it was unlucky that it did not last the complete distance.

prost and balestre were the "french-connection" back then...
