  • This video was never intended to completely explain the lathe nor how a lathe is fully or professionally used. My hope was to let the viewer see the basic principle (turning) and give them an understanding of what a lathe does. I also hoped that any viewer who wanted further direction or information would just pose a question, whereupon I'd give them whatever information they needed or wanted.

  • dang no tail stock??? that thang will wobble out like crazy man

  • ...........perfect chip............

  • i would of center drilled and used a live center.

  • all iam saying here is with out the follower rest on longer then 4 incha out of the chuck you will turn tapers in the bar..when showing something like this to a new person they would get the wronge idea, been there dont that, i under stand your purpose and intention, if it was me i would have used the follower rest and explained why, you need it on a long bar. if i was usuing only a few inches out of the chuck then there would be no need for the follower rest and no need to excplain that part

  • If I offend you, I'm sorry about that, but correction for bad spelling must be addressed. I have gone over your comments on my video, and am very picky when it comes to spelling things right and proper. My tolerance of grammatical error is minimal and I also tend to be corrective sometimes , so again, if I've offended you I'm sorry , but I'm also tired of seeing a person's failed spelling, it indicates that they don't seem to care, at least not care enough to use a common dictionary.

    Get it?

  • if i have offended you iam sorry, but correction for bad pratic's must be addressed, and i my self have gone thew this my self , on some of my videos, iam very picky when it comes to doing things right and proper and my tolerence level is very small for errors, so i tend to be over corrective sometimes , so again have i offended you then iam sorry , but iam tired also of seeing poor workman ship its shows bad of someone that shows they dont seem to care. thats the impression i get atleast..

  • Once again Kevin, I'll repeat an explanation of my intention in posting this video: If asked to simply explain the function of a lathe, I might say-"A lathe is used for turning metal". Since "turning" metal may be a confusing term to the novice, (like broaching, milling, punching, facing, parting, lapping or other industry terms). This video was made exclusively for the lay person, the one who wouldn't know what simple "turning" was without seeing a basic demonstration of a turning operation.

  • @KevinMillard68 poor workmanchip, bad practice? who are you to correct someone like that? you dont need a damn follower on a part like that. I have worked on longer and thinner than that with no follower and it turned out fine, all you need is a live center. You might want a follower on a part that's 2 or 2-1/2 times longer than that..

  • the waste was ment as waste of metal, sorry bad spelling, and a follower rest is just that might want tolook it up man , when turning long lenghts or anytheing past 3 inchs out of the chuch you need t use a follower rest in order to avoid turnning a taper in your metal,on free spinng with 3 to 4 in over hang and no follower rest then you must take extreamly light cuts other wise again you will turn a taper,

  • he did not use a follwer rest either what a wast of good metal

  • What the fuck is a "Wast" or a "follwer? Could it be that you refer to a "steady-rest" and stupidly call it a follwer?

It is always easy to spot the morons out here by their ridiculous comments, YOU are today's winner dude!

  • Kevin-

Why don't you subscribe to the video and I'll direct all further questions to you!

  • one 32nd of an inch at a time? I would of fired you.

  • 1/32 nd of an inch? What are you talking about? Maybe all that needed to be taken off was 1/32 nd of an inch? What the fuck do you know? Sorry to know that you would have fired me but I'm just happy to know that you never got the chance.

I see your brazen attitude, you are really accomplished. Maybe you aughta change your name from christheMachinist to christhedouchebag, it suits you better.

    Fired me?

    Asshole!

  • Handling the lathe is like handling a woman, everyone has their own way of doing things and as long as no one gets hurt, it's all good.

  • Its not gonna hurt if you feed away from the chuck.

  • How come you're feeding away from the chuck? And why isn't the end of the shaft supported?

  • Eric-

Truth is, I haven't got a live center for no 2Morse taper as on the tailstock nor a steady-rest either. My boss bought the Clausing and the J head Bridgeport for a song, good used machinery but not really accessorized from the dealer who sold us the two machines.

This video was never intended to do more than demonstrate the dynamics of a lathe as opposed to other shop operations like milling, shaping, surface grinding, punching and presswork.

I work with some who never saw a lathe used!

  • Hi again...

Actually, I was just wanting to see whether my Nikon Coolpix camera could take credible video but I'm really not thrilled with the finished resolution. Anyway Mme, that's what a lathe does! Thanks for viewing.

  • Nice video, I've never actually seen how a lathe works. Are the settings easy to figure out (automatic?) or must you do the math? And where do you get the original shaft? Your videos are instructional & interesting.

  • NO the settings are not easy to figure out, you must do the math yourself, and you get the original shaft from a foundary or steel factory. He didn't show any of the measuring in thousanths nor the hand movements, just the passes. You cannot learn much from this brief video.
