Aaah......This was the first 45rpm that I bought! Think I was about 11, and had been given a Record Token (yeah, remember them lol!).
Think it was watching this on TOTP that made me choose this.
Incidentally, heard him playing a live set on Ken Bruce's show recently. Sounded fantastic. So much so think I'd like to catch him live some time soon.
(Oh, before I go,anyone know/heard of Foy Vance? Say him a few years ago, and thought he looked like a young Gilbert circa '71 :) )
@1960gal Yes Gilbert still sounds great and has never stopped releasing great music , He`s on tour at the end of the year in the UK . There`s a link to his website on my channel .
yes you are right. An example of radio stations ignoring people is Leo sayer. He recorded new stuff but nobody here was interested to listen or take him on. they told him the oldies could be resurrected but the new material they were not interested in. I believe he got a record deal in Australia and is successful. Over here like gilbert he's a has been and his career finished in the 70's, which of course is nonsense.
@100tonee Yes I always admired Leo Sayer . He got some credibility back a couple of years ago with a re-mix of ` Thunder in my heart ` - but then he lost it again by going on Celebrity Big Brother and making a fool of himself . Thank god Gilbert shuns such things - he will never sell -out to the media no matter how much anyone tries to entice him . Music is all he lives for - let`s hope people recognise what a genius they have right under their noses soon .
.........is not as good. Other factors dictate a persons career in terms of continued success, and public profile, and the policy of radio stations to play certain artists music. All they wanted to say from the new album Gilbertville is an example of a very good song which probably won't get the airtime and chart success it deserves. Yet it could stand aside Nothing rhymed as a classic, and i say this from somebody who writes songs myself and play piano etc. There's more to gos than the 70' s
@100tonee I would echo everything you have said Tony. People who think Gilbert disappeared after the 1970`s are missing out on so much . You can understand why it happens - most Radio stations just regard him as an `Oldies ` artist and pay little or no attention to his more recent work . I just hope people who like those old songs take the initiative to check out his back catalogue . As you say , on every album there are songs the equal of his early hits . My channel has plenty of examples !
firstly thanks for putting this video on here and for a valid reason. Those who remember Gilbert will instantly think of this song for which he is so well known. For anyone reading this who maybe isn't aware of the vast repertoire of songs he has written, let me say that there are countless gems on countless CD's which demonstrate his genius as a songwriter. Just because the same handful of records have been played on the radio over the years doesn't mean that everything he has written since...
@homethoughts1 Thanks Pat . Even if this was the only song he ever wrote he would have his place in history . But there`s been so much brilliant stuff since - as I`m sure you are aware - People need to delve a bit deeper into his back catalogue to see what they`ve been missing .
@RAYalized He`s stood the test of time well Nicole - and he`s just as talented now as he was then - It doesn`t go away just because you get a bit older ! Sometimes your hair goes away ( ask Elton ) - but not in Ray`s case ! lol
Some of his songs are like a good friend to me that never left me .... and sure never will.
When i think of the past thirty years, his songs were always "beside" me. They are timeless.
