Apparently Joni and Joan had the same inspirational model but while Joan just imitated the sound of the original Joni actually took the form and brought some actual artistic creativity into the whole experience from within her own muse .
Joni was great guitar player ,,due to to her classical piano training,,she said I like guitar and reinvented the chords ,,that was made her great on giutar and her finger picking style and great chord changes
Wow! This is great, great early Joni - when she had a very pure folk voice. I just love these rare early recordings. I only wish some of these early songs had been released on an album.
Yes, she does sound like Joan Baez. This is before she really developed her own vocal style. But interesting to hear this very early recording -- thanks.
@justplainkaren Let's get real here for 5 seconds- Joni Mitchell is 50 times a better singer than Joan Baez. And a much better songwriter. Compared to Joni, Joan Baez doesn't even know what music is.
@PhilCCCM Yeah, but even Joni had to grow and develop. She didn't just pick up a guitar and write *Hejira*. All I said was that she sounded a lot like Joan Baez in this very early song. She certainly didn't later, and I'd agree that she's a far more creative songwriter and musician.
sounds to be written for publisher to get to the one who covered 'both sides' i.e. jud C. u know. it's from before 'sisotowbell lace etc it's before both sides, i'd bet -- and jCollns chose to cover the other. it's a publshr tool. imho as a joni-fan and a singer/writer.thanks
@rory8585 I envy you! My 2 favorite Joni albums are Song to a Seagull and Hejira. The cover of H. is do chiiiiiiiiic! I have the framed "Blue" album cover pic. All Joni is good.
Thanks! Do you have "Man From Mars" with joni singing from the withdrawn Grace Of My Heart soundtrack? I had it years and years ago but didn't realize it was rare :(
I'd love to get it again. I prefer it to the version on Taming the Tiger
Wow, 150 different Joni CD's. A true fan, like me I see. Users such as - henhenstoll, MYoutcastOR, AJMusicgirl, and Blackendoll have posted the most. Check with them.
@dvs1572 so a fan who hasnt that many cd's is not a true fan? Do you buy these bootleg CD's? Or trade them? Is it to show off or should every Joni fan have around 150-200 to be a 'true' fan. I call myself a Joni Mitchell fan and I listen to her quite alot and I am true about this but I do not have a whole wall/shrine built to Joni. Yet i do seperate her CD's apart from the others.......? Hmm
Her very first song and heavily inspired by Joan Baez. Thank God she quickly moved on to better things and found her own voice. But even here, there's a poetic flair that Baez could only dream of. In just a few years, she was on her way to being one of the planets greatest artists.

She was probably 20. She was 21 when her first album was released. I was 13 and will never forget where I was when I first heard her.

Very evocative of the Crosby, Stills & Nash song, "Guinevere". I wonder which came first. Maybe CSN were singing about Joni.

Truly original tune. No one else could have done this.

Not sure on recording but I'd say 1965 is when she wrote andcopyrighted it. She worked fast. Playing on the road all the time and writing her first tunes, one after another. © 1965; Wild Indigo Music

I cherish the poster I have of Joni bought at auction of the album cover of Hejira. It hangs in a frame in my bedroom....

@rory8585 thats funny, I framed the inside sleeve of the record of Hejira, a variation of the other images on the cover :-)
