start by honoring the treaties, by smashing the Indian act, honor our sovereignty which is the creator and his laws. and stay out of our territories and our lives, and we will not need your money to live. we will show the world how to live in harmony and balance with our "environment"
Money is NOT thrown left and right at this group of people. All citizens of this country benefit from transfer payments. The difference is that First Nations, on average, get 30% LESS than the rest of us. For all the people, and obviously there are many, who continue to support the genocide being carried out against First Nations, I say SHAME on you. Either you are racists or you have totally bought into the misinformation being circulated by the government.
Money is thrown left and right at this group of people. DeBeers and the gov't both. Something is definately wrong here. We need to find out what that is. Truly. In the meantime, help these folks out.
Yes this type of racial segregation and economic slavery takes place all over the world. Obviously it is unacceptable no matter what country this takes place in.
I see a program like a Basic Income Grant for all citizens of Canada as a intern solution until something more permanent is found. This is a Global Issue and everyone is responsible. At the Moment Money determines the quality of life for people and thus to extend money as a grant, As everyone should have a right to life.
It is a parents job to create opportunities for their children. this is not a socialist country. The natives do not have to live on reserves, they choose to. why would a young person stay somewhere where there are no opportunities. Help yourselves, I don't understand the reliance on others
@cooksteveo Change, in an economic sense, requires resources. These young people "stay somewhere where there are no opportunities" because they have no opportunity to leave. No income, no means of transportation, no food, shelter or services beyond what little is provided on the reserve. You can't "help yourself" when you have no means to do so.
@woodmuse3 You're exactly right. It really bothers me when people judge aboriginal people for not "helping themselves." It's like telling someone who is battered to the ground to stand up and fight with broken legs. It saddens and sickens me that people don't bother to realize what's going on, and take verbal swipes at the victims on top of it.
@cooksteveo Look at Transfer payments... see Quebec's. h t t p s :// docs. google. com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AspgClOZoWPXdEhxNXB1UjY4RmZ4SlE2aC1CVUNZU2c#gid=0
@cooksteveo How do you expect them to "help themselves" when they are stripped of the tools to do so? It's called "systematic discrimination" for a reason. You can't expect parents to "help their kids" when they themselves don't have the tools because of discrimination. It's easy for others to look at them and judge them for needing to "rely on others." It's not that simple--watch this documentary and maybe you'll understand.
If I were to go here as a teacher and compare the conditions that the government agreed were acceptable for an outside teacher to live in and the conditions that are apparently acceptable for the residence to live in what would I find? A dillemma about my responsabilities as a teacher which is first and formost a prudent parent. A prudent parent would not allow their child to live in those conditions.
there is apartheid. it is not of the political kind like in SA's history. It is a social apartheid and economic, and it is real. George Laraque writes about it in his book. Why are Indians in the east end of town, or always in the poorest areas in the Major cities? Why is it that only government jobs are the only real opportunities for native people? Because apartheid exists here.
you shouldn't throw words around like apartheid without solid evidence. it dilutes the word of its power. Discrimination is one thing but not all discrimination is apartheid.
@thewiffenpoof Does apartheid in your backyard make you uncomfortable? Well, it is uncomfortable to live IN! Here are two more uncomfortable concepts for you to swallow--> GENOCIDE and ETHNIC CLEANSING .
@thewiffenpoof Apartheid is any system of of racial separation which is exactly what the reserve system is. Did you know that Non-Aboriginal people are not allowed to live on reserves without "special permission"? Well, they can't because the federal government reserves substandard living strictly for First Nation's people.
I hope there's more to this documentary than the trailer implies. Doesn't show the neglect, drug abuse, mould inside the houses, broken open windows in -45 degrees, despair, low self-worth, etc. Nor does it show the laughter, the innocence of the children and the abysmal future ahead of them.
The Lupicon Cree's plight is the epitome of how our government disregards human rights if it interferes with their special interests ie: money. When Amnesty International needs to assist Canadians, there is something terribly wrong with our "public servants". I am ashamed of our "leaders".
This is a unique story ... not too many people know about ... and you as the director ... have handled it with too much sensitivity and delicacy ... one director to the other friend.
