@crazygirl2743 If the crab seems really pale, he may be molting. Try the sniff test and if he doesn't smell, put him back and leave him alone. If he really is molting, he'll finish up, eat his own exoskeleton (it's weird, i know) and harden up again, leaving him brighter and possibly more active. Both of my hermies ran around a lot more after molting. Hope this helps!

@larouxcrazy He might be molting. :) That's nothing to worry about. Also, he might be too hot, or something like that. I do suggest getting spare shells for him, though.

@starbcool Obviously the first hermit crab has started the no shell fad in your tank. Teach them a lesson by spraying them with water when they try to do anything. Make sure you get them right in the face.

When a hermit crab molts, their scent changes, and other hermit crabs can smell this. It's sad to say but it it sounds as if another crab ate your molted crab. Hermit Crabs do show cannibalistic behavior. Especially once another crab has molted! next time one of your hermit crabs molt, keep the skin, and place it in a smaller terrarium tank. Also, very gently take the molted hermit crab and a lot of sand and place him in with his skin and shell. keep him there for a few days
my hermit crab died with 3 claws how is this possible? we found the other hermit crab was doing something with the empty shell with the dead one beside it. the remains inside the shell was another claw. The dead one had 2 claws and the other one was still inside the shell.
if he smells he's dead. if not he might be irritated by his shell or molting. if you have and empty soda bottles (two liter) cut it in half and place over him or CAREFULLY move him to an isolation tank. make sure he has food, water, and a few shells wherever you put him. you can wash out his old shell to kill any insects or mites in it and dry it and put it in there with him too. hope that helps. message me if you need more help.
I know how to see if its dead. You can tell when you put it in water and it doesn't come out. And if it won't come out of its shell. And when it doesn't smell good.Cuz i had 2 but 1 died so then i got 2 more.:)

the test that i use befor smelling it is the pinch test. take a plastic spoon and put it in his claw and wiggle it. if it closes or moves hes alive. if not sniff him. after smelling my first dead crab i will only use that method as a last resort. its an awful smell.

u probably didn't find him because he had buried himself; the smell of a freshly molted crab is tasty to other crabs (who can cannibalize each other) so he probably just stayed underground until he smelled not so good LOL

I know how to see if its dead. You can tell when you put it in water and it doesn't come out. And if it won't come out of its shell. And when it doesn't smell good.Cuz i had 2 but 1 died so then i got 2 more.:)

That crab was really mad, he or she is is a shell way to small for it's size and that claw was wide open for a strong pinch.

You can't.
This is one of their many elusive properties that we just don't know about.Maybe you can be the one to find a way to tell if it's dead or not, who knows

werid..... usally he says you cant tell whatever. like he said you cant tell if a crab is girl or boy. you cant telll if a crab is pregnant.......

the test that i use befor smelling it is the pinch test. take a plastic spoon and put it in his claw and wiggle it. if it closes or moves hes alive. if not sniff him. after smelling my first dead crab i will only use that method as a last resort. its an awful smell.

I have 2 hermit crabs. one is Cody, And The other one is spongebob, because he has spongebob painted on his shell. spongebob is medium size, and is pretty active. Cody is really small, and is'nt that active

i have 3 hermit crabs and one just died and she was a small one then my a little bit bigger one missed her so he moved into her shell!! but then a day later he died! i have no clue why but then the other one suddenly died! maybe its the new sand or something or maybe its just stars shell

I had 2 hermit craps one drown in its woter dish( it just came out from molting and it went in the dish and wasn't strong enough to get out and I didnt know till it was to late) and the other one stopped eating after that one died and it died as well

if the shell was painted thats probably what killed it. paint chips = deadly when eaten by hermits

My Hermit Crab Garrett Just molted out of his shell and The next morning I found him in his new shell, Four hours later I couldnt find him and nobody even moved him the whole time! 1 day later I found him in his shell the whole time and he was still fully healthy and alive!

u probably didn't find him because he had buried himself; the smell of a freshly molted crab is tasty to other crabs (who can cannibalize each other) so he probably just stayed underground until he smelled not so good LOL

my crab doesnt come out easily and it doesnt smell but it hasnt moved in like 4 days i have another one in there but it seems fine so is mine dead or molting or what?

Put it in like a cm of water and cause they like to get baths and they come out. I do that everyday to the 3 hermit crabs I have.

ok yeah never mind it smells like dead crabs but it was still hard to get it out of its shell another way i could tell it was dead... when you touch its big claw and the claw doesn't close, yeah its dead

i have two little crabs. i fuss over them but my first two died sad deaths. they are great pets to have. so buy one, their fun!!!

i have 2 i have one that comes out sometimes and another thats active all the time. my hermit crab shelly is the one whos kinda active and i got bubba who's very active i test shelly by taking her out of the cocunut hut and putting her in the middle of the tank and leaving for 1 min come back and if she isn't there shes back in the hut. bubba i never need to test him i've tested him in 3 ways i put on my climbing wall he'll come out to climb on it i lift him up he's out put him on hand he walks.
