Cornwell has retracted some of what he said in the book. My impression is that the Catholic Church's actions during this period were mixed. Pius XI did condemn the Nazi ideology, and Pius XII himself was apparently involved in saving some Jews who lived in Rome. On the other hand there were many bishops in Croatia who were apparently involved in a mini-Holocaust of Orthodox Christians.Other bishops helped smuggle Nazis to Brazil.

Church history prior to the 19th century is the real horror show.
