OMG!!! Mark & Nils- what a fenominal gathering! - 2 of my all time favorites together on one stage playing a great song too! Could watch & listen to Nils anytime! Actually- I saw Nils the last time in 2008 in Baltimore Rams Head Live-
Just an incredible person to see live and a great guy. Since I'm from
Maryland where Nils is from , he's that much more special to me.
Well, damn. Two of my favorite guitarists together. They both have what I call a Country and Western sensitivity. Nobody tries to out play the other. Rather they play off each other. Mark and Nils may have the most unmistakable sounds in music (save Chet and Les) and to hear them play together is amazing. If you have not heard Mark and Emmylou Harris give it a listen.
Anyone know how Nils got roped into this? I know all about his grand adventures with Neil Young, Ringo Starr, and of course, Bruce. But never Dire Straits.
Guess they were both touring in the same town at same time...both are lefties that play right handed, and w/no pick, tho Nils uses thumb picks...both are viruosos w/not only vast amounts of technical skill but also huge amounts of soul
This will be July 5th, 1985! Bruce was doing 3 nights at Wembley Stadium (3,4 & 6 July) Dire Straits were doing 14 nights (or something silly) at the Arena. Nils had a day off
I have a Shecter, and I replaced the stock pickups, which I hated, with Bastard and Fat Bastard single coils... Now would you believe, people that hear it like it better than my Les Paul Gold top, Firebird VII, 62 strat.... played through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Never fails to amaze me. The thing sounds pretty good.
yeah even as a teenager Nils was a more fluid, technical player than Neil could ever be...just different styles...but of course Neil is Lead Guitar...so he put Nils on piano...but mostly, he got Nils his start in the music biz.. Check the Tonights the Night CD, Nils is part of Crazy Horse on that session...and some great guitar work by him on one song too.
hey!! these guys rock.. im 30 years old and im from norway, but my parents grew up im the north of norway, so that means a lot of time driving a car.. every summer.. it took 3 days up to mu grandparants... dire straits made my dad have a good time all the way up, and theyre great listening to whwn youre driving... my father is a great guy and i love him.
MK has such an amazing right hand - looks so solid and relaxed. And his thumb sticks out so much. I've never seen a fingerstyle/clawhammer player with such a hand position. Obviously something he was born with.
Oh wow, I was one of DS's biggest fans, saw this tour in Toronto and it blew me away, now a mega Bruce Springsteen and E Street fan, and love Nils too, what a find this is! Rock at it's solid rock best.
Wow! I did know a video from this tour existed! I remember reading about how all the other bands who played Live Aid had to fly to either London or Philly especially for the concert (I remember some of the morning performers announcing they'd have to hop on a plane so they could go play a show someplace else that night). Dire Straits just had to cross the street! :-)
Nils was playing in Bruce's E Street band at Wembley week before Live Aid, I was at the Bruce concert on 4th July Independance Day, what a gig, Nils was the best. Dire Starits were at Empire Pool and we could hear them from inside the Stadium. Didn't know Nils went over and played with them, wish I'd seen that!!.
I believe Nils played across the road at Wembley before he played on this !! I had the show on VHS somewhere, it's obviously worn out now, but this track is still playable ! Awesome Nils !!
awesome!! I wish I was there for THIS one

Great run from 43 to 47. Knopfler is my biggest guitar influence along with David Gilmour.
