  • "Gonna write you a letter, gonna mail it today"..... If McCusker was writing that today, it would have to say "Gonna type you an email, gonna hit send straight away"

  • Back in the early 80s' my Dad used to own a small Sony recording cassette player the same as Ross is holding up to his ear towards the end of this video. It was a heavy beast of a thing, and back those days wasn't actually called a "Walkman". It was bigger than a "brick" mobile phone & had a tinny little speaker on it, ran on 4 x AA batteries (and no doubt cost a small fortune!)

  • Hearing this makes me want to embrace "yobbo culture". So put down your ipods, put on some stubby shorts, go get a slab of VB and spend 1 day on the balcony at Sydney Harbour getting pissed off your head while your mates cook snags on the barbie and organise hookers for a "night to remember" .... Waiting for the Countdown ..... In the summer of 81" !!!!!!!!!

  • First ever cassette in my house was Chemistry, Didn't get a tape player till Xmas 1982. Had to listen at my neighbours place (P.s they also had the only phone in my street).

  • I left school in 1981, What a great summer that was.

  • I turned 16 in the summer of 81 so those few years are full of GREAT memories.

  • Does anyone see a slight resemblance between Ross Wilson and Adam Hills?

  • @getevilnic lol, good observation!

  • @getevilnic Certainly not in personality. Ross Wilson doesn't have "look at me" tickets on himself.

  • @80sOldSkool Nasty, much?

  • @getevilnic Which comment of mine are you replying to? Not really sure what you mean?

  • I'm just an old git enjoying a walk down memory lane.....tyvm

  • 1981, when Australia was still fully safe, secure, happy, brilliant, confident...and Australian! Let's get back to that!!!

  • @SKOTP69 Amen to THAT !!

  • @SKOTP69 1981? Um what planet were you on? Australia is far more confident now and we are in the most active part of the world.

  • They were the days 17 yo going out, no probs,no emails,no sms, bullshit just catching up with mates!

  • @TheNiKobrew Mate , I remember the times, V8 XB Wagon, my girlfreind, my mates hand full of cassettes , no mobile phone , no computers , lots of cruising , actually stopping somewhere to meet up with other mates , actually meeting NEW people face to face ...............mate the memories just keep coming huh !

  • Happy birthday, song!!!!! (in wich month did it actually came out?,december, january,February?)

  • @13101988andoni i wrote out a description - read it

  • Comment removed

  • @nzoz1981 are you always so charming? ....

  • @13101988andoni yeah, i am :)

  • @nzoz1981 Well the "yeah" instead of a "Yes" explains a lot about you already...such a shame someone that has such intertesting videos is so cold and rude....i never understood the behavior of creatures like you...

  • THAT IF YOU QRITE SWEET LOVE TOO YOU LOVER !!! THAT YOUR IN NEED TOO FEEL SPECIAL !!! "SUMMER JUST GET HOTTER"

  • so love this i was growing up with this in the summer of 81,,,

  • I want to die.

  • Why does Ross Wilson look so sweaty at the beginning?

  • ahh summer of 81 i was in year 10 lol

  • I can almost remember every one of my Summers in the 80s. Now, I can hardly remember what I did yesterday. It is not age -- it is the fast pace we live in. Too hurried, too much technology, too much this. . . to much that . . . to much . . .

  • @fallschirmjager0000 Thanks for that, faeces gurgler. I would be honoured to still be revered in 25 years as a cunt. As I've always said, "cunts are useful".LMFAO at you.

  • 25 years from now, today's 20 somethings will be saying how great everything was now. Lol I was reading Livy and Roman geezers were saying the same thing back then.

  • @MrButtinski 25 years from now they'll all be saying what a cunt you are. ahahahaha

  • I'm a young 20 year old bloke, and todays music, movies, culture are a complete joke and waste of time. Looking just at the music, '81 must of been some rocking times.

  • @ultrachasersfan Ultimatley you are 100% correct!! Luckily you have you tube to look back what you missed out. Now, when I was a kid........... Well, we didn't want to listen to anything older then because the new music was the BUSINESS!!

  • @ultrachasersfan was a fantastic time to be a kid or teen. Spielberg and Lucas gave us summertime blockbusters and pinball parlours became video arcades. video shops begin popping up in 81-82. alot of new things happened. yes to have the privilege of experiencing 2 very different eras is a huge blessing rather than being born in the matrix, perpetually jacked in to technology at every turn.

  • 1981........Great times, great memories!

  • Oz in 1981 was amazing !!! - saw mondo rock, aus crawl, machinations, dugites !!!!!

  • You have got it man, that's it; anger, dumb pointless anger...I mean what are they sticking glasses in each others faces for? Is it Iraq, or Afghanistan? Why do the young people buy hate marketing so cheaply?

    veritas

  • man.......why is nothing great anymore? 80's to the 90's was great

  • jedikesula i agree with u ,,,how good was life in the 80s.......doesnt even compare to now!!!!!

  • Funny thing about this song is i remember it coming out in the depths of the winter or '81 ..lol

    Leslie

  • Great stuff I was about 13 when I first heard this ON U NOZ

  • it is hard to express how different life felt back then, i was a countdown kid and 9 years old. there is something special about the late 70s and early 80s, kind of like the late 60s in that there just was an explosion of exciting things like Star Wars, Video arcades Etc. was the best time to be a kid. the music was innocent but honest. late 80s is where it started going wrong

  • I remember the summer of 81, is the year I arrived in Sydney from El Salvador, I arrived in Coogee Beach (in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs) when Coogee was kind of a bit of working class suburb, used to go to Selinas they used to play this song a lot.

  • hahaha I remember the summer of 81 watching trevor chappel bowl under-arm Oh and potato cakes where like 5cents and you could feed the whole family on 5bucks and Beta recorders where the best also my dad complaining about the petrol costing something like 33cents a litre

  • r w what a legend

  • ross wilson what a legend

  • Wow,the person who thumbed this down must be a Justin Beaber fan who`ll never understand what real music with heart and soul is all about.

  • Just so good...envokes so many great memories of a wonderful time. Thank you for this...wonderful !

  • Love all tha music u have hun...keep up tha awseum work!!!!!!

  • 1981... ah sweet memories indeed, met the love of my life, loved my job bought a brand new XD Falcon Fairmont Ghia..... God I wish I could go back then. Thanks for the memories Ryan.

  • Why is Ross sweating so much :)

  • @RUSSIAN1968 Because it's summer and he's wearing a suit!

  • @electroriffs And a very good bass player is Mr. Christie

  • First time I heard this song was of course in 1981 and I was delivering mail in Dalkieth , Western Australia. Had my Walkman on, peddling my trusty bike, shovin peoples mail in their letterboxes. Thought then, as I do now, what a great song.... almost 30 years ago. Time flies..... kickin' on for 60 now. Enjoy your life guys, especially music like this.....

  • Love the clothes...i used to wear them!

  • Great 80's era power pop tune ! Great Fashion Sense !

  • I can imagine the Summer of 81 even though I was only 4 years old at the time.

I can imagine all the great times, getting pissed at the beer garden, watching the palm trees sway in the wind as I sip up shots of Midori and ice.

  • @phileustace I turned 4 in November of that year too! Nearly 30 years on and I spend my life uploading stuff...

  • @nzoz1981

    Your comment made me think.

Our lives our "hijacked" by technology.

When I was in highschool I never really

caught on to computers until the "net"

arrived in 1995. Sometimes I wish the net

never came on, because just like alcohol

or smoking, it is JUST as addictive and just

like you I spend nearly 50% - 60% of my day

GLUED to the screen downloading stuff.

  • @phileustace lol, sorry, perhaps I misinformed you. I do other things besides these 'nzoz' channels. It's just that this non-profit project (service) takes up a lot of time.... though I do agree with you.

  • @phileustace

I see what you mean, but the internet has givin us access to, almost anything.

Including Youtube, the internet is an amazing thing, but dont get to addicted to it. :)

  • @phileustace and now with iphones and mobile internet on portable devices, the potential to literally be digitally engaged 24/7 is a scary realization!

  • @nzoz1981 OH MY GOD SO DID I!!!!!!!!

  • @phileustace i was four in january of that year too LOL!

  • @TheGmgirl77

    Ohh the innocence. How sweet.

Now look ut us !! 30 somethings .....

Guess we can't stay young forever !

  • @phileustace - it was a magical time in Aussie music . . . the beach, the booze, the palm trees and the girls were all brilliant !!!

  • @oldredun you are sooo right, it was magical, the more I look around me today, the more I know, WE HAD something special then!

I miss Australia, I wish we could go back to the country I loved so much then! I do not like this americanization shyte, at all!

It seems that you buy their music and junk-food, you buy their politics and grief too!!

    veritas

  • @veritas6464 . . . cheers mate, a combo of innocence and some wonderful new cultural shifts, but the Yanks are only doing what the Poms, the Cloggers, the Spanish et al had been up to for the previous 600 plus years, it's the anger and the hatred that freaks me out about this wide brown land, just like most westernised countries, young men going absolutely apeshit with full on violence for no valid reason whatsoever. Love your channel and your background yarn . . . peace man !!

  • @phileustace It was only Aussie beer back then (Fosters, VB, Tooheys, XXXX and Emu Export. If you wanted something special you'd drink Crown lager. But yes we had Palm trees back then.

  • @phileustace Midori hadn't even arrived in Australia by 81, don't try and be a "wannbe" just be honest it wasnt your era..................

  • nzoz..said it to you before..you should be set in GOLD...cant thank you enough..!

  • @Prenty52 ha ha, thank you... that's all i can say.

  • Summer of 1981 my first summer ever in Australia, this song reminds me of my youth!!!!! thanks for loading this song, I feel like crying of happiness when listening to this song

  • geez nzoz, where do you get all this stuff from...? I was 15 back in 1980 and so many forgotten things are coming back into my mind listening to your channels... thanks heaps for uploading mate...

  • @sawf555 This stuff I get from various sources (DVD compilations, rage and what's been handed to me from others).... however, the most-recent material have come from kind collectors, who have been more than happy to pass rare-vids to me, just for these channels.

  • Австралиийская поп-рок музыка необыкновенна хороша!!!!!!Crowded house,The Church,Eurogliders,Models,Flash and the Pans,etc........

  • actually, Mick Hucknall was in a punk band called The Frantic Elevators and they were nothing like Simply Red. Mick posed with a gun in his mouth on one of their single covers... lol, what a tosser!

  • These guys rip, remember being at Nambucca RSL as an under aged young guy danicng away to these great old tunes. PS Simply Red ain't got nothing on these fine Australians!

  • Hmm, his voice sounds a bit like Simply Red.

  • Before Simply Red even existed.

  • Indeed, it looks that was Down Under a good source base for many later successful bands... I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing! :)

  • I've set up channels based on every year of Aussie/Kiwi music, because I believed it had something special; which unfortunately lacks in popular music today...

  • Saw Ross and Eric with the Urban Legends last night at the Norwood Hotel in Adelaide!! Great show!!

  • nzoz1981..youre a champ..thanks for all these amazing posts!!

  • Ha cool, partied with em at the bar at Kings Cross frequently in the summer of 82

  • ha- these old videos are so funny today- they all look like insurance salesman or computer programmers. Couldn't the director wipe off the sweat of the lead singer? Love that tape recorder accessory too.

  • It was the era. At that time Australia was mostly catering for an Australian and British market. But if you youtube Daddy Cool doing Eagle Rock about 10 years earlier you won't recognise the lead vocalist. :-)

  • Ross Wilson was and still is, brilliant!

Daddy Cool (great), Mondo Rock Mk1 (fantastic) and Mondo Rock Mk2 (good pop band)....

  • I Lost my virginity to this song - so I'll always remeber the summer of 81

  • Was it a he, a she, a he/she or an it?

  • Ha Ha, a beautiful girl, but obviously you are the confused one

  • Hey ! they dressed so nice back then.......Mmmmm

  • haha at paul christy at 2:12

  • what a memory - in the car back from ocean grove - collendina !!! this song was huge

  • I like this music even though I'm a kid of this era. I think whoever got to live through the 80's had the best time of their life. I wish I were that lucky. Thank God for Youtube! :)

Now I can somewhat "act" as if I'm part of those golden years. Lucky you guys.

    Let's keep on rocking.

  • I will swap your age for being there .........then again I wouldnt be writing this ....sorry dude It was just toooo precious

  • Like I always say age gives experience. Any time you wish to swap I'm game. Lol.

  • I was so in love with this girl in the summer of 81 (19) and i met her 20 years later and she didnt recognize me. :(

At least i still love the song ! :)

  • Ross Wilson looks like Adam Hills on this video.

  • ha ha - he does!

  • and Eric McCusker looks like Greg Combet!

  • i love kevin rudd....better than that lowlife howard

  • Those summers of the 80s were some of the best times of my life.

  • Back in 1981 I used to be a used car sales dealer. One day to increase car sales, we hired a set of bikini models who helped us clean our cars. It's was all flesh and cars .... and it worked. We had 150 sales that day. And while those girls were rubbing their ****** on the cars .... this song was playing full blast on the speakers. No summer since 1981 has ever matched it. Then a group of yobbos in stubbie shorts came looking for some action and all yelled out - "Waiting for the Countdown!!"

  • When i die and go to heaven I'm asking God to take me back to Australia in 1981! Man was so simple and good then.

  • The film clip it self is an good example of an film clip from the 80s.

  • One of their finest.

  • Wow....the memories come flooding back. I havent heard this song in such a long time. Mondo Rock was one of the great aussie live bands of the 80's....BRING BACK THE LIVE MUSIC !!

  • Alas, the modern day studeo contrived no musical talent and video emphasised poor excuses for entertainers means everything must be mimed. How anyone can go to their "concerts" and pay for the "privilege" of listening to their CD is beyond me. The is another fine Mondo Rock track. Cheers to nzoz1981 for this upload.

  • The first Mondo Rock incarnation was the most ROCKIEST (I mean, ROCK 'n' ROL, not instability). Primal Park era was the best!

  • man how SHARP are these guys love it!

  • Don't tell anyone, but I was issued by my engineering employer with a pair of prescription safety glasses exactly like Eric McCusker there. I thought they were pretty tacky but not now!

  • LOL...he sort of reminds me of Kevin Rudd in this!!!!

  • Funny that. A few people have said that. I have been living in the UK since 2003 and missed seeing much of K Rudd. I thought there was a slight resemblance but not sure. NZOZ disagrees about the lookalike!

  • Cool, Nzoz, you rule. Keep up the good work. Aussie Andrew.
