This was played beautifully. Was the person who played this a senior? Right now I'm a junior but the only senior mello has a solo while the rest of the band does a scatter drill. The song is Hoist the Colors. I'm in the Algonac High School Marching Band by the way.

@goaliehead347 All you need to do to play D in tune is lip up if you use first valve or kick the third valve if you use one and three. Personally I use first valve and lip up.

I play mello and that was awesome. I'm with the Azle bands in Texas and I hope to have a solo similar to this one in our show about the emotions the heart expirences. Keep doin' whatcha do.

from what i've read, there was no amplification when we performed. never has been. that is Katherine Rudman playing her solo for "Make Our Garden" grow. we call her "Krud" ;) lol love you Krud. she was one of our best performers.

Okay. Everyone saying it's amplified needs to hush. The reason the band sounds softer is due to an effect called compression. Digital cameras use it to prevent sounds from getting distorted when they're too loud. The camera is closest to the audience clapping once the solo ends, so that's what you hear most of. Notice how the band triples in volume once they stop.

Compression is a trick used by sound engineers to make recordings have more uniform volume. That's why the mello solo seems loud.

Admittedly the video was taken with a Kodak point and shoot camera. Again, it was not amplified. Thanks to all who have left "positive" comments. This is a memory that a dad will never forget and I couldn't be more proud !!!

its clearly amplified. or the rest of the band is garb or unless the camera isn't good and couldn't handle the amount of decibels . I've played at the carrier dome before. Yes the solo is great.

DUDE. yall need to calm yourselves. I play Mellophone too. I recognize that this girl is obviously a frikkin sweet player and this solo was beautifully played. maybe it is camera placement, or maybe this Carrier Dome really is super magical, but i just don't understand why when the whole band comes in playing LOUD that the audio is significantly less than every time the soloist plays.

435Mergul... you have no idea what you are talking about. The band used no amplification at all in this show whatsoever. Maybe you should have someone take you to the Carrier Dome and listen to a solo horn player. Or any other instrument for that matter. I'm her father and you can ask anyone involved with LeRoy's music program or anyone that saw this show that year. You were not there, so therefore you have no business to even comment.

@435Mergul - I play mellophone... trust me, thats not amplified. The mellophone is a surprisingly loud instrument to begin with. And have you ever heard of DYNAMICS? The mellophone was probably at Forte. The rest of the band sounds like they were at Mezzo-Piano. Forte is louder by quite a bit. Think before you post.

Also- Nice solo to whoever it was who played that. We need more mellophone players in the world like you!
