I think that while The Matrix is a very fine film Dark City is more complex and focused. Instead of being concerned with action scenes, which are admittedly excellent in The Matrix, Dark City tries to be tell it's story without falling back on formula. It succeeds greatly in this.
Take or leave the opening narration, but the director made a big mistake cutting out the epic scene of the cityscape at the beginning of the film where the city comes to a halt. Talk about a dumb move! Might as well have removed the silent clip of Schreber too, since that was obviously filmed as a lead-in from the studio approved narration, to the epic opening cityscape (which got removed for no reason, since we see everyone asleep in the very next scene.) That's why he was looking at his watch!
I really love this film, but it's a bit hard to justify how the water in the tub goes magically clean so that the fish can survive, particularly since we still ignore his power...But it's so good anyway that I'll overlook that little detail.
Thanks for posting this. The movie is way too dark to the point where it is stressful trying to make things out, but otherwise it looks pretty good so far.
i got the director's cut of DC and the director himself said that the Matrix is basically the little brother of DC. It uses a lot of the same props and sets for both movies ( DC and the Matrix ) and a lot of plot elements were also recyled into the Matrix. For example, Mr. Hand's facination with Murdoch is jut like Agent Smith's obsession with Neo. So, I agree it's not a rip off, but it's damn close.
this is good, but I liked the matrix better. it made more snese, and it took the time to develop its characters and plot better. maybe it was inescapable with this plot, but dark city seemed to rush through everything way too fast without taking time for mood and character development and explanation.

Bullshit. While Dark City might be better then the Matrix sequels which are also mindblowing but not for all tastes, Matrix gets better on every viewing while Dark City is just worth seeing twice (once for the story, twice for the visuals & designs) but nothing more.
People only say Dark City is better then Matrix because they feel Matrix is overrated.
It's amazing how incestuous Hollywood is. This film has the same premise and a similar plot to The Matrix which I think was being made at the same time. Who borrowed from whom? Or is it just coincidence?
good call. I almost walked out of the theatre on this because Noir is my favorite genre and I was upset with the style at the time. Watching it several times since I can tell you as a TV and Film teacher, I LOVE IT. i thought it was actually older than 98 but IOm sure your right. Good catch!! Hated Matrix... I hate Keanu. No matter what he does and how well its written, he sounds as if he just rolled off a fucking surf board. sorry..
hey, great accurate things you said, Supenmanu. sigh...excellent movie. very cinematic, great story and music, great characters and performances. just a very good audiovisual project. one of my fav movies. indeed, the noir mixed w/ sci-fi comes across, perfectly weaved in there :D thanks for posting, ThinkingWithPortals1....haha great username too, appropriate :D I'll bet this is your theme movie :D
I think that yes, but it doesn't matter - "1984" is also dieselpunk, just like "Indiana Jones". It's like this - dieselpunk term was CREATED when somebody saw, that they were very similar. It doesn't mean, that those movies were made to be dieselpunk. They just ARE xD
This is really a masterpiece. It is an art film more than a Hollywood film. If only Hollywood do this types of movies, there would be more intelligent americans. And we would be a more Avant-Garde country!!!
you can never have an entirely avant garde society, but you should be proud of your countries thnkers and imaginers. I think you mean a more cultured society, wherein such things are appreciated.
this movie is pure awesomeness... i watched it a million times back when it came out... it came out before Matrix and it's a billion times better too.
And they manged to really get this film noir feel across - as well as the science fiction elements which actually fit together grea, while at the same time giving you tons of things to think about (-:
Oh and be sure to watch Requiem For A dream right after this one... you'll see why.

Great movie... there are a lot of little details, symbolism and lots of philosophical meaning in this...
Not to mention the cool film noir atmosphere and the cool 40's music (-:

The Matrix isn't a ripoff of this movie. They're actually quite different. The Forgotten, however, probably is a ripoff of Dark City.

You're high, everything by that director sucks.
Especially Babel and 21 Grams, two of the biggest pieces of crap starring various stars

The roof top sets used in Dark City were re-used in the beginning of The Matrix.

Also notice the staircase used when the detective is chasing Murdoch.

directors often sell rights to plots and they get changed and remade by other directors.
