My Vostro 3300 do this same noise but seems to come from HD. I notice that when I plug it to AC the noise stops. It just happens when ts is connected to the battery. I google this issue but didnt find any results.
Don't know if this will help that problem but my 1500 sounded terrible when I recorded..like my voice was underwater. I found out that the updated driver I got from Dell was causing my problems. I just reinstalled the driver from the disk that came with my laptop and the sound improved. ? Also that speech enhancement thing was terrible too so if you have that installed, try installing it and see if that helps.
I get that sound on my desktop when I scroll down pages (with headphones in my ears) and when the cd drive is spinning or something.. Its very annoying
faustsmith im using it for djing and it rocks big power little money.
if you are buying this new then go for the expensive sound card option when building as the standard one is crap and you can get interference on your recordings/dj mixes.
and despite what people say hear theres nothing you can do its a hardware problem.
wont bother noobs or non audiophiles/experts/awkwood kuntz.
to really solve this get a cheap usb exteranl SC but not to cheap!
i had the same problem on a compaq.. turns out the realtek options *yeah realtek sucks* had a mixer feature which would output all kinds of noise into the mic input including music /sounds im playing on the computer just muted the mixer and it worked great ever since no noise
i dj with a laptop and usb midi behringer bcd2000 mixer and sold my dell inspiron because of this generated background noise and was thinking of trying a dell vostro. i use other dj software/ hardware with a laptop too. any comments/recomendations from anyone in this field? i know some usb mixers generate less noise, thanks.
I have the same problem with the speaker and headphone, but the warranty period has expired and dell does not open the chat room for me.
As I am living in the ME, It is very difficult to call them on phone. Can you guide me to a location on dell website in witch the issue detail is located so that I can get a guidance.
I'm planning on getting one of these soon, You can have them replaced for free under warrranty until you get a good one, I know it's a hassle but other than that it's a pretty good notebook for the price. You can also have dell test them before they are sent out. I have read on line that after exchanging them they got a good one.
I also wanted to add that apparently the wxga+ screen laptops do not have this issue So I believe it may be noise from the High Voltage Power Supply for the cold cathode in the other screens as the wxga+ screen uses the newer led backlight technology. I'm getting the wxga+ so hope all works ok.
I've got dell vostro 1700 (the biggest one, 17") since 7 months, and I haven't noticed any sounds, it works very quiet and i don't have any problems like your laptop :o

actually, that's one of the common problem of the vostro ( all of em )
they have high pitched whiney noise (also known as the beep-problem)and loose battery
so i thought of changing my mind and buying the inspiron next but man... that one's worst that Vostro, if you use it too much, it could burn your motherboard because of an abnormal cooling fan so even if you buy a new cooling fan, it will still be broken
PS. i just find out that Vostro 1500 is the most problematic of all Vostro series
Yeah, it's pretty annoying. You can buy a USB sound card and use that instead. For those on a budget, there's a ton of generic $6 cheapies floating around ebay that aren't too bad.
I had the same problem with my Vostro 1500. I had to have the motherboard and audio daughter card replaced under the warranty. Not sure which one fixed it because I replaced both at the same time. Dell said it was a problem with the processor power state. *shrugs*
I have a brand new Dell custom Vostro 1700 and I'm having the same ear piercing annoying noise, making it unbearable after a while to work.I even hear the sound louder from my headphones, when I use them.I assume there must be some noise insulation problem with the design of Vostros.
I unchecked "Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power" option for the all USB Root Hubs and Selected the run htl command option at the tool RMClock but I'm still having the same sound problem.
I am also facing noiise problem for my vostro 1500.I tried unchecking power option as suggested by ounightstalker but it did not worked. I was not able to find 'run hlt command' option mentioned by skullmoon 87 in earlier comments. Can anybody please help me to get this crap out of my notebook?
I've got the same issue dude, I just turn the sound up and it doesn't bother me. Try getting a Soundblaster X-Fi ExpressCard, They go for about £70 but it's well worth the dough. My old latitude D505 even made some static, all laptops have crappy on-board sound, face it.
same problem with my dell latitude DB30! so annoying..

I've read using USB sound cards (like the X-fi Xmod) doesn't fix the problem - can anyone confirm this?
Also, does anyone know if installing a PCMCIA card like the Audigy 2ZS Notebook fixes the issue?
Finally, does anyone know if using a USB mic could help remove the noise from recordings?
I don't mind spending a little money but I'll be really angry it doesn't fix the problem, so I'd like some advice to be sure. Thanks in advance.

The funny thing is, I bought an external USB sound interface for my Vostro 1500 but the problem persists.
Rumour says it is from poor shielding within the notebook.

Try seeing if changing the brightness changes the pitch of the sound.
