It just astonishes me... I'd love to know why exactly it is that when we hear this song, all that is conjured up is Sadness...why? Why does the conventional opinion perceive this as sadness? What happens inside our brains to make the decision that what we are hearing should be considered as melancholic?

@ShreddingAngel Because generally; slow, downbeat songs like this are used to portray sadness (in many cases, at least), and so naturally we link it to sadness. It's a neat thought, though. What if songs like this had been used to portray happiness at first? Would our thoughts on what it sounds like be different, or is it natural to hear stuff like this and be sad?

@midairman It's fairly easy to simply stay alive, but living with a clear purpose has been hard for me thus far. I can drift by just fine, but I feel I'm held back by having no real purpose. I can't simply pull one of of the air -- I can't un-know what I know without disproving my earlier sentiment(s). And I think anyone who says that their purpose in life is something like golfing is full of shit.

Some people are happy by virtue of their existence, but I doubt this view is an acquired one.

I agree. Some people are more inclined to or, to be more specific, have the need to search for that 'something more'. More or less where I am. I'm jealous of people who, like you say, are happy merely by being here. Like you, something holds me back.

As for a purpose, golfing is at least strange. But you can ask yourself, is thé purpose your passion? Your belief? Could be anything...

@midairman This is one of the main reasons why I'm drawn to philosophy.  Many people I personally know go through life without asking questions such as, "What will be the outcome of my life? Does it fundamentally matter if I go to medical school? Is it really my wish to get married or am I following tradition and biological urges?" etc. I can imagine it must be easy going forward if one's path is free of questions and/or doubts.

@midairman I believe a purpose can only be defined as what you believe it is. If it's for the bettering of anything, regardless of how miniscule it may be, it would be a purpose to me. But everyone is different. I don't believe that people are happy to just exist, because existence within itself is barren. Everyone needs something to make them feel as though they're needed. That's the whole purpose of life: to search for your purpose. I don't believe in a God putting me here for purpose though.

Maybe I expressed my idea wrongly. Hm. You're right when you say everyone has to have sth to make them feel like they should be here. But you have on the one hand the people who are 'superficial', who can find meaning in idk, say work, family or so (not saying that's not important). On the other you have people who really feel like they're short of something and are 'restless'. They find meaning in things too, but not in the immediate environment.
