I used to think if I had a kid I'd teach him tp play chess and maybe put him in the school chess team etc etc. Now I see chess for what it really is- basically a waste of fucking time. I'd rather put my kid in a computer class, or just let him go outside and play and get some excercise. All of this chess study for what? what percentage become GMs? I'm guessing it's less than 5% of all serious chess players. Only GMs will make any sort of money from it. Better off your kid in something else.
Good Job, chessmom64! A really inspiring video and what a great kid you have! I know exactly how you feel because I am a chess parent too. My son is almost 13 and is about 1600 (but he has only been playing for less then two years). Maybe will meet you some day at the Nationals :) Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your note, and the best to your son. That's a great rating for any kid, and especially for playing a short time. My husband has a blog about the experiences of being a chess parent--it's called the 64 Square Jungle, and it's on a site called Journalspace. YouTube won't allow web addresses to be posted in the comments section, but you can find it if you google it.
This is my 13-year-old son, who has been playing since he was 8 and whose current rating is 1962. If you're interested, you can read more about him and about the Illinois chess scene in my husband's blog, chessdad64, which is on journalspace.
