  • AWESOME! I LOVE THIS! FABULOUS!

  • Its crazy how my youtube volume never cuts out when I listen to OLD SCHOOL Gospel. Only the new gospel, and other things make the sound cut out. Very wierd.

  • The sound that comes out of her mouth at 1:37 is is amazing!

  • Yr anghymarol Marion Williams yn canu o'r galon gyda llawer iawn o deimlad ! Rwyf yn hoffi'r dosbarth hwn o ganu.

  • she had some talent and some thick eye brows and that group got it goin' on

  • What a soul!

  • MY MY MY!!!!!! Oh how true this is even now.....But to God be the glory.....

  • who is that in the first picture?

  • 2 mezzo's 1 soprano and an alto............power house qaurtet.

  • Beautiful masterpiece....................but whats with those brows ouch Marion!!!!!!

  • magnifico.......increible...y asombrado del talento antiguo........superior a todo lo actual...............una pasadaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...preciosismo del bueno....alma en los cuerpos...........

  • Thankyou Marion, for being the first.

  • Do I hear a little Bessie Smith in the deep soul of Mother Marian Williams there at the end? This just proves that the language of music is vast and everLASTing!

  • yes Lord, In '62, it definately was a mean old world for black folk. and in 2010 it is just as mean, but in a far different way. Sing girls. sing.

  • Preach on, girls -_-

  • Prachtig dat je dit op Youtube hebt gezet. Wat was ik hier graag bij geweest.

    Hartelijk dank.

  • wooow that song is a masterpiece!!!

  • Hi People! Please, can anybody help me - who is the girl singing after Marion?

  • Beautiful black woman! I love her voice

  • FABULOUS!!!

how I wish I was born then!

I would have loved to be there

  • INCROYABLE !!! Surtout celle de gauche a un coffre impressionnant !

  • @MrFrance7 il y a surtout marion williams la divine au centre!

  • Genial!!!! Superbe !!!!! Magnifique !!!! Quel coffre celle qui a chanté à gauche... Sublime !

  • Genial!!!! Maginifique !!!!!

  • And since when did Mattie sing soprano?

I thought she was a contralto.

  • When did Mattie Harper die?

Not much is known is known about her.

  • When did Kitty die?

  • Marvelous. I saw them at around the same time in England. They toured in "Black Nativity"

I've linked this video on my blog, along with a link to the 90 minute documentary of the history of Gospel music.

  • Thank you for the info, and the links on your blogs!

  • @colonelhall what is the documentary called?

  • Rest in peace, MOTHER FRANCES STEADMAN (tenor)! She passed away about a month ago.

  • Henrietta don't have that harsh squallin sound here.

  • Frances sounds like Mahalia

  • Who's the "tenor" and the soprano (not Marion)

  • this is really beautiful!!!! Thanks for sharing!

  • Yall prolly gonna look at my comment and think I'm crazy, but I didn't know Mattie could sing soprano so beautifully !

  • Marion Williams could really sing plus the woman on the right can definitely sing, trust me i really love this song

  • I don't know why Henrietta is not on there but i love kitty Parham the best

  • I love the theatrical approach and staging they had with this video/song. Thanks for sharing.

  • Mattie Harper"s voice was amazing!!!!!!!

  • When Frances says "since i been born" shivers run up my spine!!!

  • Mattie Harper's coloratura soprano is superb and outstanding. And Frances Steadman's deep vibrato is hair raising. I"m loving it!!

  • I love how the sisters trade off voices and song parts. this is the best and i like how they watch each other while the other sang.

  • I'm pretty sure Mahalia had hit the Netherlands before 1962. Not 100%, but quite sure...

  • they made this up for the ward singers who had wronged all of them

  • Oh dear, what in the world happened. I just thought they all basically started their own solo careers. I pray they got it all right. We've lost some beautiful men & women of God in the Gospel singing world

  • they started with the Ward singers when they were the hit in the 50's becaues of the stars of faith ( without the Wards) Mother ward Was making money and they knew this becaues she would show it off. she made them live with them and pay rent so she knew what she was doing.

  • Hi,

on the end of the program, the following names appeared on the screen: Marion Williams & the Stars of Faith, Professor Alex Bradford & the Bradford Singers, Princess Stewart, Madeline Bell, Kitty Parham, Henrietta Waddy.

    Regards,

    Jaap

  • I recognize Kitty Parham (with her hair up), who steps in to join the group at 1:10. But does anyone know the names of the other two girls backing up Marion Williams?

  • The Stars of Faith THe soprano voice that takes over the lead from Marion is Mattie Harper, the other 2 girls are Kitty Parham and Frances Steadman

  • What a gift to see these wonderful old recordings! They are cultural gems. Thank you for posting.
