  • I simply adore this woman, always have. I have been listening to her music since 1989 when Steady On came out. She has the most beautiful, melodic voice and she does not waste her time writing sappy love songs which have no meaning, instead writing about things which happen in the real world, things we can all identify with.

  • I can't stop watching this!!!!! she's a virtuoso!!!

  • un-be-freaking-leave-a-ble!!! on so many levels!!! xxxx +

    oooo

  • No it was just Shawn Colvin and her guitar.

  • Not easy to play fast picking pattern and sing slowly over it...but everything here is just pristine.

  • awesome ! this lady is the one and only! Shawn I love you! don't you dare ever, ever stop!

  • Ótima versão, um pouquinho mais agressiva que nos CDs, tanto no A Few Small Repairs quanto no Live. Gostei bastante.

  • Just saw her At N.O. Jazzfest 2010. Poor baby, she was having the devil of a time keeping her guitar in tune (probably the weather). In any case, she closed incredibly strong despite that and the crowd loved her. She did "I Don't Know Why" which just blew me away! Shawn if you read this come back. New Orleans loves you. We know a first class artist when we see one and you more than qualify.

  • Such a great song..her eyes convey such emotion..there are parts in this video where my heart skips a beat at the way her eyes move.

  • This was the song my husband and I had our first dance to at our wedding. Runaway Bride came out around the time we met, and it just fit perfectly because he had the bluest eyes I had ever seen.

  • Jebus she's amazing! I love the guitar part in this song..what a lady!

  • Probably my favorite song of hers.

  • Love watching her play that guitar. She likes Martin's which is what I have. A D18 in fact. I want her to come over to my place to practice with me. I'm sure she would right? Heh heh. Love her.

  • She actually has her own "Shawn Colvin" custom made guitar by Martin...

  • Thanks for writing. Shawn is such a great artist. Yes, she has her own Martin. I think there is clip of her talking about Martins. In fact I know there is. :) I'm glad you are a fan of hers Have you ever seen her live. She's great. You must know good music being a fan of hers. :)

  • Yes I saw her live about 12 years ago at Villa Montavo in Los Gatos California, with my father and his best friend. She is a great performer- just her and her guitar. I love her music.

  • I'm glad you like her. She is just so great and I wish more people knew of her talent. If you like her then I know you like good music. :)

  • She has a John Mayer custom model as well, only 1 of 3 or 4 made, I believe.

  • She plays her own Martin Artist model - an M (16" wide versus OM/000 15" width)with a three piece back (mahogany sides and outers; rosewood inner). Complete details in Dick Boak's book on artist and custom models.

  • and she's using a sunrise sound hole pickup

  • Thanks for the info. She's great isn't she? Love listening to her play.

  • I kick trouble's ass for you it's not a heroic thing just something must be done cause once you've met the archetype of beauty Once you've heard her sing it's just your duty ain't no big thing so if trouble wants some action "it" I surely will bring Shawn Colvin, you are the most beautiful woman that ever lived. Period.
  • Baby let me set you down You look so troubled and I think I know Just when you think you've come around There you go Now I know the business of the heart And it'll get you anyway it can You need someone to walk with in the dark, well I'm your man I go to the trouble like a magnet That's where I'll be Trouble is just a place to sing It's what you need
  • I swear you look like you're in jail

And all at once you're halfway out the door

One foot dancing, one foot nailed

    To the floor

Chasing those circles in the ground

The same old shit is still the same old lie

Just when you think you've got it down

    Watch it fly

  • I go to the trouble like a light Or like a dare Trouble is just a friend to me, I know It'll always be there It's really hard to make your peace So give me some credit for the hell I've paid This world's a blessing and a beast Everyday So come on baby let me show you how The less you know the more I comprehend You don't have to drag me down I descend I go to the trouble and I like it That's where I'll be Trouble is just like love, if it's half the way
  • It's all I can see

And it's just what you need

  • I love the driving nature of this tune, and aave loved Shawn since the mid-90's. When she sings, I feel like she's ripped my soul right from me and put it out there for all the world to hear.

"...same old shit is still the same old lie..." Love that line!

  • awesome song.......

  • Ok, so I rewatched the video and yep.

    Still think shawn's somethin' else!

  • It's a marvelous song and Colvin plays beautifully, but why does she look like she's bored, and sneering? Maybe she should play a song she cares about.

  • She is living the song as she sings it, like any good artist should. I think it's stunning and the song is the better for the sneering.

  • I do not see how you can know how she feels about the song...

  • Once in a while I start thinking that I've learned to play the acoustic guitar pretty well, and then I've gotta see something like this.

I've always enjoyed her music so much.

Thanks to Sparky2086 for this and other great posts!

    see ya!

  • It's a pretty easy guitar part, bob. Pretty much just open C and G chords with lots of hammer-ons. Granted she uses them to great effect and it fits the song really well, but it's not difficult to play.

  • Right, not difficult to play, however try playing that cadence for 3:33 while singing at the same time. A little more difficult than you are giving her credit for.

  • Also alternating the bass. adding some texture and stuff in between all those hammer-ons. The main riff is goes between Am and G, at a fast tempo. the speed is what makes it. Playing the hammer-ons clearly while maintaing the speed and rhythm can be tricky to sing with. Great song overall.

  • Shawn is the greatest singer-songwriter alive. I have all her cd's and they are all sublime. Thanks Shawn!!!

  • I saw Shawn recently in August in Red Bank, New Jersey and she was great. She is an amazing guitar player as well as singer and songwriter. I wish more people were aware of her. To see her in this video playing her Martin guitar is very much appreciated by one who has one and knows how much practice it takes to play like that. She is fantastic!!

  • i am still harmonizing from the back of the audience at gatsby's

  • This video gave me guitarsms :)

  • this is one of my favorite songs ever!!!

  • me too. my favorite line is "you don't have to drag me down--i descend"

  • wow....whats a wondeful..i love all of her songs..sunny come home would be my favo...always,,,colvin fan from aceh-indonesia

  • I am so speechless. I can't wrap my mind around the idea of any one person having that much vocal and musical talent- not to mention power in words. WOW.

    -Kamiece

  • This is from her album "A few Small Repairs" - every song is great!

  • Thanks So Much! Been waiting a long time to see this again. Fab aint she??

  • I love how Shawn looks dead into the camera when she sings:"Give me some credit for the hell I've paid"

    Unbelievable artist, song and performance.

  • I think, this gig was in 1997, if I see her pictures and the dates at MusicPictures! Ten years ago!? Shawn's acoustic show is great, and her acoustic sound is more better under the passing time, like her Martin's wood....

  • Great new videos of Shawn. What show is she on and when? I love her acoustic sound, prefer it to the studio sound. She was awesome in London Nov 2006. Thanks for sharing Sparky

  • This was a VH1 special only broadcast once in the 90s. I was lucky enough to record the show. The Glasgow show in 2006 was also amazing.

  • She did an amazing cover of Gnarles Barkley's "Crazy" at the Chicago show in 2006. The concert was mind altering experience. She was particularly chatty and caustic this night, too. The only thing missing was a performance of "Tuff Kid" or "I'm Gone" -- my two favorites from "These Four Walls"

  • Oh, is that where that performance was from? I liked her version so much better, very soulful.

  • @sparky2086 did a kid get up on stage and play the harmonica in that special? by any chance?
