Actually this song was written by Merle Travis for Tex Williams . Tex came by Merle's house, and said he was going to the recording studio soon, and asked Merle for a hit song. Merle went into his house, came out with a pen and paper, and smoking a cigarette - the rest is history.

My Dad told me about the video. He never smoked, but his Mom does, [maybe that's the reason he doesn't?]. I've been told by more smokers to never start.

Merle was great, he really the booze hard too as well as some other things. I read Johnny Cash's autobiography and he and Merle had a lot of 1 day party's that lasted for a week.
