UFC is a sport, and it's not about killing the guy. It's about using skill, and years of training. Using those skills to win fights. GSP could have ripped out Dan Hardy's arm or permnently ending his career. It's not hard to break someone's arm. GSP wanted to submit him, and not to kill him by ending his career. There is a 3 tap out rule for a reason.

If its true that GSP let him out of the submissions to avoid injuring his opponent then that means he isnt hungry enough to be the Champion anymore, because if the situation was reversed Im pretty sure Hardy wouldve broke GSPs arm without thinking twice. I also agree they should form a fighters union, which they probably will at some point. They are getting paid damn well to train for 3 months and spend 25 minutes or less fighting in the octagon.

The guys in the UFC can train where & when they want, as much or as little as they want, perform for 25 minutes or less and make $65-$100,000 a pop. NBA,NFL,MLB owners are making WAY more money than the their players.

Take the Dallas Cowboys for example, Jerry Jones just spent 1.3 BILLION dollars on the new stadium, it seats 80,000, average game tickets range from $100-$500 a piece, every game will be sold out once a week for 4 months, do the math, thats not even counting money from broadcasting & merch.

@JG1635 lol, and they have no pay per view, they only have tickets, swag and tv adds. So, UFC has several TV shows, pay per view, tickets sales, etc... They are making a fucking killing! The UFC is a billion dollar a year company... The players, in total, don't make even a hundred million a year, over 300 fighters and they as a group make shit! period.
Also, UFC is constantly expanding into new territories and is not exclusively a US sport, being sold, the show, in 150+ countries... something a national sport can't do. The money will come from other countries and eventually USA will only be a small part of their global market. It will be bigger than any sport able to cross boarders and cultures around the world.

The GSP fight was a bit of a disappointment. I think we expect too much from him. It makes sense on why he took him to the ground, why would he stand with Hardy when that's what Hardy wants? It's like playing his game and not his own.

@JG1635 yeah that's according to Dana Whites rhetoric, not the fighters. The fighters could be making a lot more and the pie could be more evenly split. If you listen to Dana White he'll have you believing if it wasn't for him all these guys would be starving. The fighters will unionize, just like all the other leagues, but it will take more time because it's not a team situation and every man gets fuck individually. Dana has lost fighters before, over money.

@bragladish: I agree the fighters should be making more than the do at the moment, but I wouldnt say "a lot more". I also agree they should form a fighters union, which they probably will at some point. I dont know if they would be "starving" but I would guess that for most of the fighters their employment opportunities outside of fighting would be few & I dont think they would be making anywhere near the kind of money working a day job that they make fighting for the UFC.

@bragladish: There are millions of people out of work right now in the USA, the economy is in its worst depression in 70 years, the fighters higher up the UFC pole are getting paid $65,000 or upwards of $100,000 if they get a bonus (KO/Fight/Sub of the Night) which is A LOT more than these kids would be making stocking shelves at their local Walmarts. They are getting paid damn well to train for 3 months and spend 25 minutes or less fighting in the octagon.

@bragladish: All the players in the NBA, NFL, NHL & MLB do not make "millions" a year & for them its a Full-time job, they need to attend team practice & trainning & team meetings year round & they play an entire season of games, in the MLB they play over a 100 games a season. The guys in the UFC can train where & when they want, as much or as little as they want, perform for 25 minutes or less and make $65-$100,000 a pop. NBA,NFL,MLB owners are making WAY more money than the their players.

Take the Dallas Cowboys for example, Jerry Jones just spent 1.3 BILLION dollars on the new stadium, it seats 80,000, average game tickets range from $100-$500 a piece, every game will be sold out once a week for 4 months, do the math, thats not even counting money from broadcasting & merch.

@bragladish: While its true that Dana & his Business partners, the burrito brothers or whatever their name is, are making a TON of money, the UFC is like a huge circus, to keep the show on the road must cost a TON of money, theres a lot of overhead, and people to pay, you gotta spend money to make money, and the UFC spends a TON on promotion alone. Maybe later when the UFC is more established the fighters can get paid more, but they are making out ok for now.

For spike TV, for TUF & Primetime epoisodes? To rent the venues, pay for security, insurance, pay their UFC staff, the creative directors, event organizers, lawyers, production managers, graphic designers, TV producers & directors, on & on & on.. after paying the fighters the UFC still has a huge amount or people on their payroll.

Also, UFC is constantly expanding into new territories and is not exclusively a US sport, being sold, the show, in 150+ countries... something a national sport can't do. The money will come from other countries and eventually USA will only be a small part of their global market. It will be bigger than any sport able to cross boarders and cultures around the world.

To expand globally as they are will cost money, of course they will make a huge profit in return, in business thats the idea. Would I like to see the fighters get paid more..YES..do I think they are being paid unfairly now..NO. Will the UFC become bigger around the world than Soccer.. I dont think so.

The GSP fight was a bit of a disappointment. I think we expect too much from him. It makes sense on why he took him to the ground, why would he stand with Hardy when that's what Hardy wants? It's like playing his game and not his own.

No one wants to see somebody get "murdered", but people do want to see exciting fights, and if they paid money, they have every right to "boo" or complain if a fights boring. MMA is a sport but its also entertainment, and GSP playing it safe, rolling around on the ground for 25 minutes every time he defends his belt, is not entertaining. If he wants to do some takedowns and G&P thats great, but people want to see him stand and bang too.

No one wants to watch a boxing match like the Pacman vs Clottey fight, or watch a scoreless baseball game, or a low scoring football game with no big plays. People/fans pay to watch sporting events to be entertained, and Dana is in the entertainment business, his job is to put on fights which are entertaining. He's knows GSP has been a good face for the sport, but he also knows fans are growing bored with him.

@huntman125, I agree that GSP is amazing, and IMO the greatest fight atm, but if you saw the post-fight press conference I believe Dana White did justice in backing up GSP. He told everyone, that GSP isnt to blame and said that Hardy should have prepared better takedown defence. He even said its going to be difficult to find a fighter who's going to be able to take on GSP at this time. As Dana White said, this is just one fight and don't forget GSP's other fights. Dan Hardy just had balls!

GSP's fight against Jon Fitch wasnt boring...went 5 rounds, but sure as hell wasnt boring. GSP vs Penn wasnt boring...Its just his style of fighting, and it seems that you, along with others are lookin for more brawlers than actual fighters. Not saying Sanchez vs Guida wasnt sick, but...
