@jimmyhayers This tune is called Celerity then! Its published as Celerity in the Charlie Parker Omnibook so its got to be a mistake by whoever put it on youtube. Celerity as in 'speed' makes far more sense.
@xXmusicman007Xx Rico 2's. Plain and simple, on a Brillart Tonalin. Identical boxes were found in both saxophones. The King Super twenty and the Plastic one he used at Massey Hall. Bird was known to have played hard reeds early in his career and was also witnessed playing Ben Webster's horn (when he didnt have a horn with him) with a number five on it, and handling it with apparent ease.
@timsaxstanfield In this recording he is using a metal mouthpiece, and for much of his later career he uses various unidentified metal mouthpieces. Do you happen to know any of the names of these mouthpieces?
@freighter014 Well I don't actually know that, but if it's Birds sound you're after then the answer lies in the technique I'm afraid and not in the choice of mouthpiece. If it was purely the mouthpiece he used that gave him the sound then everyone would have bought Brilharts at the time.
Also for the record I don't believe that he would have blown any better had he kicked the smak. Bird always blew well because as a kid for three years he did nothing but experiment and copy Lester Young down to the last detail.
Wow! Bird has been worm food for decades, but his legacy lives. I can't help thinking that even though Bird was in bad nick (due to severe drug abuse) he could blow so brilliantly. If he kicked the habit he could have reached his full potential - I wonder how incledible he would sound then...
hang on hang on, ive always known this as celebrity, however i got the charlie parker omnibook and it refers to it as celerity? SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT TO CALL IT ONCE AND FOR ALL PLEASE!
This is a piece of history: I never knew that Buddy Rich ever played with Bird, let alone that it was caught on film... the most music-packed minute and 30 seconds I have ever seen.
It's called celerity

he would borrow someone else's sax for the night, then, at the end of his gig, sell it for more heroin.

@jimmyhayers Apparently it does. I didnt know that. Probably a pun on Celebrity then or vice versa. Or just a publishing error. Who knows !

God only knows what kinda spliff Charlie reaches for at the end of the video.....
But man, that ending at 1:28 is one of the best I've heard. His solos are melodies. Hes the truth.
