Von Brendel habe ich oft die f-moll Fantasie gehört zusammen mit einer französischen Pianistin: diese Aufnahme hat mich sehr beeindruckt. Als Astrologe sehe ich, daß Schuberts Merkur, also seine Botschaft, von meiner Sonne - da gehört viel von mir als Solist dazu - zum Leben erweckt wird. As a composer of piano music, Schubert thought orchestrally. The writing is concentrated, ever striking with long melodic lines that make coherent the contrasting idea. Bravo here - this exciting and lively performance captures the essence of Schubert's Romantic side. In D. 946, the forward-looking Schubert anticipates the rise of the character piece by incorporating structures from that tradition in which he was best versed, so to speak (that of German Lieder, of corse), to the solo-piano canvas upon which a plethora of Schumann Opuses would be realized. Again, fantastic performance - alternatively lyrical and grandiose; Schubert should always so sound thus!
