how could i miss this band in the 80s? they got little or no airplay in our country....could it be possible that Karen O of the YEAH YEAH YEAHs got her influence on this band?
Siouxsie & The Banshees at Brady's in Liverpool (used to be the cavern)
One of those really small venues, you know the type, up close and personal. You could only get a couple of hundred people in, but you'd be pushing the limit.
It was 1980 or '81, the Banshees had a new single out (Israel)
Anyway, after they played their set, Clare Grogan came out to watch Siouxsie right next to where I was. Had a really cool chat with her, she was foxy even with the scar.
Very cool. The guitars are great sounding, they surprise you and change chords well too after you initially think the simple will remain simple. Clare Grogan sounds really cool too. Fun and eery song !
To me, a cross between Missing Persons and Thompson Twins (2 bands that were huge dance pop in USA, to the point that I hated them both from over-playing on MTV). Funny how they lip synched a song as simple as this one, maybe thats the only way the show aired. Interesting post, she doesn't look all as hot as she looked in other things, I'd still do her though so she can make those screechy voices, mmmmmm.
She always mimed out of time. It's part of her cuteness so we can forgive her for that. The reason her voice was dubbed on all their live performances, in the Happy Birthday period anyway, was that their producer, Trevor Horn, used to speed it up a little.
The reason it's out of time in this particular video is the sound is out of synch with the vision. And I thought the producer of Happy Birthday (which personally I can't stand) was Martin Rushent?
Here I go again: I love Altered Images early stuff which was produced by Steven Severin of Siouxsie And The Banshees. Then (the usual story) the record company hauled in Martin Rushent to make them more commercial, hence Happy Birthday, etc, which I personally thought was a "sell out". However, Martin Rushent is a great producer, he did the early Stranglers albums for instance.
Don't you like any of those songs? They are wonderful!! The whole thing gels. I know it's poppy, bubblegum stuff but does that make it c**p? Look at the Monkees...
Please would someone post some more of their songs from the Steven Severin period? I would be very keen to hear them on the strength of this song. Dead Pop Stars I'm not mad about, I must say.
Dead Pop Stars I think is brilliant. And there was the bizarre co-incidence that it was released just after John Lennon was shot, although it had been recorded some weeks previously. Of course, no one believed this, they thought it was a punk stunt, and it never got played on the radio. Except by John Peel.
Buy their "Happy Birthday: Plus" CD, you won't regret it. Most of the early stuff including "Insects", and "Happy Birthday" (which I always have to skip!) is also on it.
I agree..the early stuff definitely has a different feel -- more post-punk, a little harsher, more foreceful. "Legionnaire" is one of my faves from this period, which I definitely prefer to the Pinky Blue era...although that one has some great, GREAT pop songs on it. I love it too but in a different way.
Who else mimed live? Surely not the ultra-cool Stiff Little Fingers? Check out Gotta Getaway Stiff Little Fingers. They're on stage in front of an audience. And it didn't look cute....
I'm fairly sure none of the bands of this era ever mimed on stage, or on The Old Grey Whistle Test, The Tube, etc. But Top Of The Pops used to virtually insist on miming, for various reasons. I remember particularly Stiff Little Fingers making a total *rse of this because they imbibed rather too much beforehand ! Jimmy Pursey of Sham 69 managed to persuade TOTP to let them play live so he could say hello to his Mum - "...who's on Top Of The Pops then?!"
I think it's out of synch. This is a bit of a minefield because what happened with some video producers is they would overdub a live performance with the studio version, which drives me mad. Again some early Stranglers videos had this.
Terrific song. I'm getting to like it the more I listen to it. I just wish Clare Grogan had worn a short dress or a little skirt for that performance. She is so sexy.
If she had, she probably would have nicked it from her sister!
So the story goes, the family were sat down to watch Clare and Altered Images on their first "Top Of The Pops" appearance, and her sister just exploded "The f*cking b*tch is wearing my dress!!"
Surely not? She's far too cute and lovely to have come from a family like that.....I reckon in the Grogan family, if anyone had sworn, Ma McGrogan would have washed their mouth out with soap. Apart from the teenage Clare, who would instantly have been put across her mother's knee and spanked. That's where she learnt to make those appealing squeals, methinks.

she has a scar?
johnchang7 2 years ago
Because of slight pixilation here it's dificult to spot it.
But if you pause at 0:57 you can make out a 2 inch scar to the side of her left eye.

Clare was gorgeous back then. I had the pleasure of seeing Altered Images back in 1981.
How sad the bass player went on to be in the crap that was/is Texas (have they split? Hope so).
It all went pear shaped when Titch left. Still, after the abomination that was Pinky Blue, who could blame him?

This was played "live", and broadcasted later. All the stuff on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" was done live, usually in a BBC TV studio.

What do you make of that Stiff Little Fingers video, then? Either the sound is very badly out of synch or he's miming. I think it's the latter.
