  • Wow! When Oscar plays that final chord and she's still perfectly in tune....

  • It seems like no one my age would ever listen to this, let alone enjoy it. I know why I'm called an old soul, and I wouldn't have it any other way :)

  • No one was ever like Miss Ella and no one ever will be. Just the very best of the best. I could listen to her 24/7 and never be bored because she was so amazingly versatile with fabulous musicianship. Her voice was a true instrument. So glad we have these performances immortalized and available to the world.

  • So effortless, it's amazing. She sings like she breathes...

  • I want to hear her Billie and Phyllis Hymann sing together...in the afterlife.

  • Ms. Elle, Fitzgerald, was one of " America and Harlem best vocalist ever!

  • maravilhosa para sempre um anjo cantando que passou pela terra

  • Music is universal, no matter what, but unfortunatly, I believe we've lost the true escense of music. It's important to understand the lyrics, not just the melody.

  • 12:14....a.m. of course

  • HONKY!!!!!!! INFORMATION TIME, ELLA FITZGERALD,THE FIRST LADY, OF THE "HALLOWED" JAZZ MUSIC. HONKY!!!!!!! THAT IS ME, THE INFORMATIVE KIND.

  • Beautiful... simple is that.

  • 18 people went to bed at 9

  • I'm starting to study jazz standards... sounds like i'm at the right place. God, what a tremendous feeling in this voice... I knew Fitzgerald was an angel, but I was far from the truth ^^

  • You just don't get it do you?....it's because she's not human...that's why she's the only one who could sing that way......

  • that's my mom and she tucks me in, 'round midnight. i love you, mommy....

  • Very, very beautiful!!!!!!!

  • Amazing!

  • This is the best version of Ella's Round Midnight, fortunatelly along with another great artist Oscar Peterson at the piano.

  • Ella was the best female vocalist of all-time, even though she handed that to Billie Holiday herself, she was skill wise the best. She could've sung any genre of music.

  • @LittlJohn Ella thought Sarah Vaughan was "the worlds greatest singing talent." Those were her very own words. I LOVE them all, but there's something about Ella's voice that joins all the dots for me.

  • @bolder2009 I was talking about it with my mom. Cause I said Ella had to be the greatest female vocalist ever. My mom was like "Ella never thought that, she handed the title to Billie & Sarah" If Ella was in the R&B world now, she'd be where Beyonce is. Minus Jay-Z lol

  • @LittlJohn Its best just to enjoy what they left us. And that goes for all the other greats of the by-gone era.

  • flawless and effortless...I bow at your feet.

  • Ella, if you see Amy, can you tell her that we miss her and thank her for reminding us of you. And please let me know when you two are doing a show together.

  • Round Midnight- Still sounds good Ella, ray.

  • sin palabras, incomparable

  • Somebody;

'With A Song In My Heart' by Ella?

  • Pretty much all these comments can be summed up by:

    Lol, pop's shit ey.

Just shut up and enjoy the music.

And yes I am aware of the irony of this comment.

  • Comment removed

  • Ella's singing of that last phrase says a millions more than any "pop stars" today. (And pretty cool to have Oscar Peterson on piano)

  • Comment removed

  • Ella ist kriecht mir mit ihrer Stimme unter die Haut. Es ist zum weinen schön.

  • Who can hit a note anymore?

  • Ella is the Greatest. But with this song, less is more. But still much better than Amy lol.

  • Saudades de Ella!

    Finérrima!

  • ( Continued ) I'm absolutely in love with her voice . Makes me want to buy everything that has her voice on it .

  • Wow just wow she has such a beautiful voice her vibrato is so freaking beautiful wow I love her . I'm just discovering her . I mean I was born in 1977 so she is way before my time and I've always liked the song " Someone to watch over me " but I never knew who sung it so I looked it up and Ella Fitzgerald pops up then I started listening to other songs by her and I just cant stop listening her voice is so smooth and satiny .

  • @MulattaPride you might like a former colleague of mine, Darryl Rowe. still singing in San Francisco. he scats on a really high level, very smooth male jazz singer. he used to kill on this song. he has some stuff on the internet. glad you found and appreciate ella and her music.

  • Its also nice to see Oscar Peterson allowing space for Ella to operate. Undoubtably one of the greatest Jazz pianists that ever lived, but not always the most sensitive accompanist. This performance was a master class by the whole esemble.

  • remember that Ella performed in a day when very few people had TVs, only radios. She didnt need to put on a visual show, her voice was her ticket.

  • what a bitch.

  • Amazing wonderful voice

  • Ms. Ella had to be the greatest in her field, you could understand what she was saying. Today many of our young vocalist aren't achieving that at all, not to mention shaking their bodies while attempting to sing. Ms. Ella didn't have to do that at all, she had class, unfortunatly class is fading in the wind, it's all about sex, not reall vocalizing.

    Count Holmes

  • @Mrholmeslecount really? Seems to me that the entertainment industry has always been about the selling of sex. There isn't anything new under the sun and sex would be a major not new anything. Ella like many during her error used the sex appeal that was "popular" during that time. Each generation does what the audience is looking for and responding to. There are many "real" vocalists in todays market but you have to search for them but they are out there and if you seek ye shall find.

  • @Mrholmeslecount I completely agree with you...

  • @Mrholmeslecount Well I can agree with about half of that statement. There are some great vocalists these days who move around a lot because they just really get into it, that doesn't make them bad vocalists. Even musicians who DO have a sex-vibe around them can still be good, Jimi Hendrix is amazing AND sexy. I'd say the types of musicians we should be boycotting are the talent-less modern pop singers signed only because of their looks and conformity, rather than dedication to good songwriting.

  • @Mrholmeslecount not really

  • @Mrholmeslecount It's true that there are a LOT of those kinds, but there is music that really has soul today as well.

But I totally agree with you that people are really turning sleazier as the years go by now..

The maintream music today really is mostly rubbish.

  • @Mrholmeslecount

Sorry that todays singers are to exiting for you. Maybe you could open your mind and take a second listen. By the way, last time i checked, studio singers never, ever, jumped around while they were recording. Listen to some Adelle

  • @Mrholmeslecount also try some Florence and the Machine

  • @Mrholmeslecount i'm with you brother, and she had an incredible palette, soft to hard, dropped in and out of registers and tones as if she were playing a horn. altered the melody at will but still stayed true to the lyric. its no wonder frank idolized her. quite simply as good as it gets, period. i'm hoping someday thing will swing back to this true form.

  • @Mrholmeslecount. ELLA FITZGERALD!!!!!!! THE FIRST LADY OF JAZZ MUSIC!!!!!!! IS THE BEST IN HER JAZZ! MUSIC!!!!!!! FIELD, AND THE BEST LADY SINGER, THERE EVER WAS.

  • @Mrholmeslecount while it's always important to value classics, it's forever unfair to chain the future to the past. Perhaps it is better off, to remember the past in sweet inspiration, and to admire the future in the same.

  • Excellent! !!!

Thank you very much for the rarity!

  • wasn't quite expecting this.. marvelous

  • the Amy Winehouse cover of this is awesome fans of this should check it out

  • @Shipwrck86 I think Amy's version is better! but that's just my opinion. Amy's vocals are golden, but she put the sexy back into it.

  • @1janiesuper This is live! Perfectly executed, shading every phrase with great attention to detail, and improvising in some parts. All in perfect pitch. Amy's version is recorded so the comparisom is pointless. And I too love Amy's version. But this is a live performance so for me it merits higher praise. One thing about Ella is that she was always consistent. Everytime she hit the stage she delievered. You won't find any shockers in her live performances.

  • @Shipwrck86 Fuck Amy Winehouse

    R.I.P. AMY .

  • My regret is not seeing her live when she came to London. To me she was the greatest female jazz singer of all time.

  • thank you for posting ! !

  • dislikers -- HA, you people are sad, delusional, jaw-dropping losers.

  • @clucaspik Amen to that.

  • I was reading some comments about liking music for the lyrics and like how much an artist cares about his/her music. I think hip-hop is definitely worth digging into if your into that because the real artist are underground you just gotta look. for instance Look up "eyedea even shadows have shadows" Awesome poetry listen to lyrics.

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, Ella Fitzgerald. The greatest singer who ever walked the planet earth.

  • Wow...no one did it better

  • beautiful ^_^

  • keeping it real

  • rich media moguls are destroying the people's music & talent

  • Im a trumpet player, she sings trumpet parts, that why her and louis were amazing. The ending of this song gave me goose bumpes and i almost had an orgasim, ..it was amazing. Music is not the same! and it shows!

  • If you can get your hands on it, get Ledisi's project called Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue. She has a cover of this song and In a Sentimental Mood that pay great tribute to Ella!

  • its horrible what amy winehouse did to this song

  • @dlmcc1987 Sorry but I don´t agree with u

she made a version more 21th century

  • understand me ella and amys are real goood gives two different additudes.WHen I feel crushed and extremly i go tto this version of ella cause it feel like she alone tooo and crushed yet hopful and it hits the spot.when Im pissed about being depressed I go to Amy and she like you fucked me over and I want evryone to know u peice of shit and that hits the spot.so both are number 1one ine my book because they are to different emotions yet both are emotional.

  • Pure magic! That's all.

  • great

  • I'm 15 and i'd much rather listen to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and many other Greats than listen to the stuff on the radios today do you think i'm weird

  • @IAMLICIAR

No, you're not weird, It's having taste! Think of all the latest singers and try to imagine people listening to them in 50 years time. And yet here you are listening to Ella Fitzgerald all these years later, that is all down to the quality of her voice. Continue to explore the music of the past and I'm sure you'll find songs and music that will live with you forever.

  • @mickram23 well my friends think im weird and so does my mom. dont get me wrong theres still a few great artists out today like Chrisette Michele and jazmine Sullivan but they studied greats like ella so a few years ago i thought it would be best to learn from her and i really got into old music so theres no turning back now

  • "Some kids in Italy call me 'Mama Jazz; I thought that was so cute. As long as they don't call me 'Grandma Jazz." She truly is the mother of jazz!

  • wow

  • I second that

  • Who are the 16 complete idiots who thumbs down this video? They should be tied to a chair and made to listen to Lady Gaga until their heads explode.

  • Amazing

  • Is it me as I just do not understand how anyone can dislike Ella's interpretation of the American Song Book. She sings to the melody as written, with little embellishment and clear as as a bell...Whadya looking for people...Please explain...?

  • @juliusmaloney

Well if anyone is looking for a BETTER interpretation of songs from the American Songbook they are not going to find it and especially from today's singers who are keeping the songbook alive. The best 2 singers who interpreted the songbook best were Frank Sinatra & Ella Fitzgerald: the King & Queen Interpreters of the American Songbook. Ella had perfect pitch and just like you said the stuck to the melody, and the songwriters who sung these songs loved her interpretations.

  • @juliusmaloney

Also from all the versions I've heard of "Round Midnight" it's Ella Fitzgerald's rendition that I always come back to. I always come back and listen to this loive performance and the version from album "Clap Hands Charlie". I've heard versions of this song from today's singers and they just don't sing it the way Ella does. I'm sure if Frank Sinatra (whom I call the King Interpreter of the American Songbook) had sung this song it would stand right next to Ella's.

  • 16 people wih zero musical understanding have given a dislike.I feel so sorry for tthem and he whole world they are missing out on.

  • Ella can make even the toughest man cry.

  • @cleanpalette Yes, there's nobody like her !! nobody! I cried when I saw her sing in person and I don't cry easily. This video is absolutely beautiful. In fact, I'll probably use it when I record my second video since I play the sax. Ella is the BEST!

  • true artists dont need autotune, lip-synching, and flashy lights and choreographed dances on the stage. ive noticed over the years that great musicians have something natural that really touches and entertaines you, while pop singers are more entertainers then artists

  • @Setivo

I agree and also true artists care about their craft and they treat their art seriously. Now as a singer Ella is an entertainer but she is also an artist. These pop singers today are just entertainers who don't really care about their craft. It's all about getting famous, being in the spotlight and getting attention. But a true artist like Ella will always be remembered . . . . even after her death her music is still remembered. I can't really say that about today's singers.

  • 1:53-1:56 and the rest of the song=pure talent

  • oscar and ella, sublime....

  • Yes, "effortless." The woman is the true diva of jazz.

  • wow. speechless.

  • The people giving all of the great classic jazz videos like this one a thumbs down must be a bunch of death metal haters. Either that or they're just good old fashioned racists.

  • @OpheliaRising Maybe they just have tin ears.

  • @luvmusic09 Well, I would say that part is implied if they are into Death Metal.

  • Ella is the only one that can sing this flat, and it's still magical.....I love Ella....

  • Hey, can we stop arguing about who invented jazz; let's just listen to it. listening to it is much better. :)

  • Yes, it's Oscar ..

  • Is that Oscar Peterson on piano?

  • @shoniobling Most certainly is. Says so on the extended info, as well.

  • @munson3120 thanks forgot to look at that.

  • Is that Oscar Peterson on piano?

  • Her voice is like velvet.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaah she's incredible!

  • Fevkaladenin Fevkinde ...Şaheser..:)

  • The greatest female vocalist of all time ! Period ...

  • @bud21s wait you know guys who are better? Cause I don't.

  • @sidewaysinfinity8 Maybe one or two ... Francis Albert , Mel , Nat ... maybe not better but just as good ! :) she is in GREAT company !

  • @bud21s you think so..? I like Billie a lot too...idk

  • @bud21s ..Lady Day...excuse me. lol

  • @WTFman024 While I love Billie Holiday , ( her birthday just passed awhile back by the way ) if you are talking about the perfect " voice " I still stick with just plain Ella ... :)

  • @bud21s There's no doubt about it..and one of the sweetest people to grace Planet Earth.

  • @bud21s You are right. If this does not make you want to cry out loud it's so beautiful and so rarely available. Ella Fitzgerald was wholly devoted to the moment. She was free to lose herself in our presence. We are lucky to have these images.

Your children's children will still know the name Ella Fitzgerald. Count on it.

  • Ella is the queen with Billie, Nina, Sarah, Carmen and Nancy in her princess court !!!!!!

  • It's over already?

  • Ella is The Queen, and Sarah Vaughan is a Princess with the same tune. Include Carmen McRae in this list of the greats who mastered this tune.

  • witchcraftlord, get back on your meds before you make the music crazy, and come back to the group. Nurse Helga is gone, and we saved your teddy bear. The head was stitched on with metal wire, and teddy forgives you.

  • A true legend- she was awesome! This lady was about talent not putting out an image and wearing outrageous costumes. (*cough*Lady Ga-Ga-goo-goo*cough*) I so want to name a daughter Ella, its a pretty name. =)

  • @boffan1988

That's one of the things that I hate about pop singers. They are all about putting on an image and not focused on the music and delivering "quality". Ella Fitzgerald was all about music and not putting on an image. It was the music that she cared about and delivering "quality". I wish today's music industry was more focused on the "music" but that is why there is so much autotune, lip-synching, and flashy lights and choreographed dances on the stage--there is not that much talent

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 old times always were better

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 ..Amen and Amen.

  • @MusicLoverBrian1

That's more mainstream music. There's still what you want. Try Joanna Newsom. Amazing voice and quality music. Try the song "garden of eden".

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 Wow, I just was saying exactly that to my mom,i'm 14 years old and I don't like pop singers,I like these type of music, the type of music that focuses on the singing and the lyrics.I like you.

  • @mashangula

It's unfortunate that today it's not about the music that matters. There are pop songs that may sound catchy to the ear but over time they will be forgotten because they don't have that staying power and longevity to last. Catchy songs are momentary and they won't last. Just listen to the lyrics in today's songs. Listen to a Lady Gaga, Kesha, Justin Bieber, Rihanna and all of these other crappy pop artists. The lyrics don't have any depth or substance. It's nothing but shallow.

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 Exactly! Ther are some good artists, but not the mainstream ones. People can say that Frank Sinatra, Arethe Franklin are "old", but for some reason they know who they are. That's just my opinion

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 Lady Gaga actually has some good lyrics, depending on the song. People are so quick to say she's all auto-tuned, doesn't have meaningful lyrics and all that simply for the fact that they either don't like her or never really took the time to listen. She's flashy, yes, that's part of the business. But she's one of the few who can actually sing live, with just a piano, and her lyrics aren't as shallow as some might think.

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 Couldn't agree more !

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 you could say it's a different kind of talent. not everybody is a great showman

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 Talent is subjective. This is jazz music, your comparing pop singers to traditional jazz singers. Its not even the same genre. Getting on stage and putting on a show with dancers and being a entertainer like Michael/Janet requires the same talent as being vocally perfect. Of course I'm not saying they are better than Ella. Ella is the queen. Its just different forms of entertainment.

  • @happyperson123456

What I meant was that the majority of what we see in the music industry today is the same ol', same ol': singers getting out on stage with choreographed dance routines, flashy lights, wearing skimpy clothing but their vocal performance is average (that is IF they are really singing). Most performances are lip-sync or autotuned. Michael Jackson could dance on stage and was one of the best entertainers BUT that man could sing. He had vocals.

  • @happyperson123456

And what makes up most of the music industry today is pop music and unfortunately there are some "so-called pop singers" who can dance and entertain but can't sing very well (which makes me think why are they in the business to begin with) and there are those who can dance and entertain and they lip-sync or use autotune. Talent is indeed subjective but today what makes a person get into the industry are a person's looks and appearance. With all of the talent that Ella had

  • Que pena que ya casi no queden artistas así.

  • Why do people respond to people who insult u on any site ? Why waste your time.

  • how wonderful! love you, ella!

  • shred. hard.

  • Wait a minute, what is that pre-echo at 2:55, before she sings, Turn your speakers up. What is that?

  • Wow she sings great. I love her voice.

  • the best singer there has ever been

much as I am so over the moon for Barbra and Aretha and Kiri te Kanawa

Ella edges everybody, and she does it without shouting

  • The voice of an angel...brings me to my knees everytime.

  • Enchanting.

  • I absolutley love this song. I'm 16 annd I tried to take on this song, I'd love to have some criticism. Please watch my cover? (:

  • @snoopyflick and @witchcraftlord, that was THE BEST online argument I've ever seen. Kudos to both of you.

  • Daaaaaannnnggggg!!!!! 0:45 gave me CHILLS!!!

I still kick myself for not going to hear her years ago. It was a local fundraiser...$100 per ticket. I was young, dumb and cheap.

And later I found out Joe Pass was with her too...

  • Love Ella!

  • ..."Memories always start round midnight"...

    perfect..
