When he's saying Orthodox is he refering to some sort of orthodox Jewish beliefs? Cuz christian orthodoxy is nothing like that. In many cases we're more "flexible" for example priests can marry/have sex , in fact they are expected to ( by "we" I'm refering to 80% of the people in my country)
@stravos11 Surely Howard doesn’t speak about Christianity. There are 3 main varieties of Jewish religious conduct: Orthodox, Conservative and Reformed. As far as I know, unlike Orthodox and Roman Catholic, where the difference is theological and philosophical, the difference in Jewish denominations is in how literally the Old Testament should be taken.
Einstein believed in the god of creation and majesty. He didn't believe in a floating guy in the sky. He said that the Universe could have been ugly and chaotic, yet all the laws of physics could be written on a single piece of paper. This is how he came up with many of his theories. Man made religion is allegorical and symbolic. But Einstein did respect a higher order to the universe. That is the god he believed in. The god of creation.
@mgaft nah, i was talking about religion..it was kind of a joke, since everyone has a different 'fact' about einstein's choice of faith, or lack thereof
@mannyamaya Got it. There is a big difference between practicing a specific religion and believing that our Universe is intelligently created. I think many people would fall under that later umbrella, including, perhaps, Einstein. I, for instance, came from an atheistic background, but had an experience that made me sort of wonder. I even made a vid about it. It’s calls “How I found God through algebra”
Einstein believed in god so that must mean something, he was one intelligent man out of thousands. There's a lot of intelligent people that don't believe in fairytale nonsense lol
to be fair, Robin may have read about Einstein's beliefs about God secondhand through someone who "interpreted" those beliefs as being theistic.
i can understand where Howard is coming from and i can tell some stories about being raised Roman Catholic. i do believe in God, but I have doubts about the Church and religion in general (like Howard does about Judaism and religion in general).
Pig is a lot closer to a "kosher" animal than a lot of things that some unobservant Jews eat (like shellfish, catfish, and rabbit). Pigs HAVE cloven hooves, but they don't chew cud. The reason pork is so reviled by Jews is because that was the main meat forced upon the Jews in Spain, and in general Europe (ie "eat pork and show what a good Christian you are") ...
yeah Robyn kinda fucked up there. Einstein used "God" as a metaphorical explanation of what science is yet to uncover in the universe, or pieces to the puzzle that perhaps we will never find. Oh well at least Fred summed it up well !
"how do you explain how we went from mud to texting" and 8th grade bio class can explain that, Also Einstein was an admitted atheist, Robin as usual doesn't know wtf she's talking about.
@famouswwefan He was born an ethnic Jew and may have been raised to believe in Judaism, as most children born to Jewish families are. He was NOT a practicing religious Jew as an adult. There is no question of this. Even the quotes taken out of context to make him look like a deist say nothing of religion.
"What is the thing that animates us?" "Hanna Barbera?" Funny joke.
But I believe the answer is called a brain... and when that dies so do we..
The answers to life can be answered simply. Simply by observing the world. 1. We don't exist. 2. We are born. 3. We live. 4. We die. 5. We don't exist.
We don't experience death, we have no consciousness of it, just as we didn't experience non existance before we were born. That seems to be the only logical way to look at it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the bibles says: God has placed eternity in our hearts. somewhere deep inside us, we know there's something after this life. howard stern tries to deny, but he can't... its that eternity in his heart.
From most of what I've read einstein was pantheist. You could argue that's a believe in god. Really I think all it means is he believes there's a spiritual side to our existence.
maikeru01 einstein did believe in god, though not sure why this gets your panties in a bunch. in a famous argument with Bohr, he argued that the Heisenberg uncertainty principle was wrong because god does not play dice with the universe. strong atheist like yourself who force your beliefs are just as fucked up as any religious nut.
"God does not play dice with the universe" sounds like a figure of speech to me. Not that it really matters though. Einstein was a very smart man but not infallable. What he believed proves or disproves nothing about the existance of god. Because god does not reveal himself to us we must conclude either he does not exist or he is invisable. If invisable, why?
I agree with you though that extreme atheists can sometimes be as bad as extreme theists at trying to push their beliefs onto others.
einstein was a physicist. so that would suggest any avasion to "god", would've been refering to A conscious creator of a perceptional reality. not any of man's gods, religious etc..
I know what's next? Her claiming Darwin denounced evolution on his death bed. There's too many misinformed religious weirdos. No need to give them ammo.
Sadly, I believe most of that to be true. When you die you die. Therefore live it up and know there is no hope of feeling ever again. But ....Conciousness lives on without peptides or brain chemistry. It is the brain and the human body that makes us feel. A small portion of feeling can be attributed to our soul but not much. Our soul is eternal though. So remember in death there is life and by bonding ourself in life to something we will find freedom.
Interesting, esoteric and brings about an array of questions. Does soul have mass, charge, polarity or any other measurable characteristics? Were they produced at some point of time or were they forever just sort of hanging in the outer space waiting to be engaged? Are there a final number of them or a new one produced every time a new person is born. Are we the only species who deserve leasing them or were using only some local subset? What is the purpose of this process and is there one?

Really. I thought he gave a very clear answer. Fred is agnostic, a person who believes that the answer on whether God exists or not is unattainable. Fred admitted the existence of some super intelligence out there. However, should it exist, it won't be a God of the Old Testament - angry guy in the sky or God of the New Testament - happy guy in the sky. In other words, Fred doesn't deny existence of God, but he denies religions perception of what God is.
What brought you to this conclusion, father? And, incidentally, do you equate agnosticism with shit because of its neutrality only? Does this mean that, in your view, neutrality is a shitty position altogether. In other words there shouldnt be gray areas. It should be either black or white. "A real man has to take sides." Right?
Hm. a very rare and interesting position. Let me ask you this.
Back in 18 century there was a so called war for "Spanish Succession" fought mainly by France against Austria to stop a possible unification of the Kingdoms of Spain and France and as such, upsetting the European balance of power.
Which side would you take and what would be your reasoning in doing so?
Of course, I should have known better. Austria produced Hitler and Schwarzenegger. What did France produce? Mayonnaise.
But let's say you happened to be in a crossfire of two Colombian drug gangs. Would you also take sides or decide to keep neutrality and wait until both gangs eliminate each other?
You must be either a very young and romantic guy or you're just bullshiting me for the sake of consistency. You know what would happen if you try to join such gangs.
