For those whining about today's players: football changed. Those players of the 60's and 70's wouldn't last 30 min. They were far worse in terms of physical training. They could never run the distance a median player on a top team runs in any regular weekend match. Defenders, once a neglected class of players, are now among the best on the field. Moreover, teams changed from the (now) outdated philosophy that strikers were the only ones to attack and defenders just stayed put.

@lotwyo That's exactly why football is becoming such a boring sport. Back then it was normal to see a 8goal match. Who wants to see a game without goals? If the defenders are the best players on the field, the match is probably going to be really boring. That never hapened with Garrincha playing, by the way.

lotwyo, The players of the 60's and '70's would be even better now with the improvements in conditioning and equipment. As for your idea that defenders didn't attack in the old days, you're mistaken. The England teams of Alf Ramsey for an example used attacking full backs like Terry Cooper & Keith Newton extensively & what about Carlos Alberto of Brazil, a defender who scored perhaps one of the greatest goals of all time in the 1970 World Cup Final!

I think Garrincha was most creative, unpredictable and explosive than Pele. Considered by the current standards, Pele seems to play in slow motion. Had Garrincha lived a better life, he would probably have become the greatest of all time. His playing conveys a sense of freedom, poetry and fantasy that it's impossible to find in this prosaic world anymore (with the exception, maybe, of Guardiola's Barça).
