when I was a little chap in grade school, the first thing we did of a morning was greet the teacher and then Pledged to the flag...and sang God Bless American. We also sang the soldiers songs, the Marine song, Anchors Awey, etc....we sat and did our stuides and had happy days.....None of that is happening today unfortunaly....look at what is coming out of these schools, if they get that far.

These are the lyrics from the "original" Marines Hymn. One of the commandants in the 1930's or 40's authorized it to be changed to the present version.

These is the first time I have ever heard a recorded version of the original. Nice find.

You're almost right AmericanNinja1981. The lyrics were revised in 1929. Apparently the then commandant considered the lyrics too boastful for the other services. In my humble opinion, the commandant was wrong and the lyrics were right: "Admiration of the nation, we're the finest ever seen and we glory in the title of United States Marine." I gloried in the title for 23-years and I now glory in the title of Retired United States Marine.
