  • To all MARINES, afloat or ashore, around the world. Happy Birthday!

And may the next 236 years be as glorious as the first 236.

    Semper Fi

  • Not the version I learned, not the version I like... I am a Marine. Don't F*ckin judge!

  • I think that this Original version song by the late great Kate Smith is awesome. I can't believe the vulgarity and rude comments posted as to this is the true Marine Prayer or not which it is. Sad to mar the image of Kate.

  • Not wrong, just differrent era!! Get over it...for the time...it was great!!!! Semper Fi

  • BushMass is correct. This is the OLD version.

  • As the mother of a Marine who fought in the first Gulf War, I can only add my prayers and congratulations for and to those who served in the greatest branch of our military! As my son, a Sgt. says, "once a Marine, always a Marine!" . Semper Fi, fellas, and stay safe! God bless the Devil Dogs! As I have heard so often, there are Marines, and those who wish they were Marines!

  • Hey rlibos. I'm the wife of a marine. Bet I could kick your sorry, wimpy, cowardly little a**.

  • Screw the Marines !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @rlibos must be one of those coffee drinking 9-5 air force weenies

  • Makes this Old Conservative want to go looking for some Liberal Yellow Peacnick. Semper-Fi from Garry Owen 1966-1970 Ohh-Rah

  • @ilegworldchamp You don't have the guts to look for anyone you reactionary MORON....

  • The lyrics aren't wrong, they were changed in November of 1942 and approved by the Commandant to the current lyrics.

  • epic! bravo! that one made chills go up my spine! back when our country was at it's prime!

  • OUTSTANDING

  • when I was a little chap in grade school, the first thing we did of a morning was greet the teacher and then Pledged to the flag...and sang God Bless American. We also sang the soldiers songs, the Marine song, Anchors Awey, etc....we sat and did our stuides and had happy days.....None of that is happening today unfortunaly....look at what is coming out of these schools, if they get that far.

  • MAKES ME WANT TO GO TO WAR!

  • Naw its not wrong it's just the original version, before we had an airwing... it was changed in 1942 to include the Air Wing. Semper Fi!

  • Hot diggity damn! SEMPER FI!!!

  • SemperFi Brothers,

It's not Obama's war, it's our war. Truth is Bush moved us in there. I'm a Vietnam era Marine and mistergms has his head up where the sun don't shine. As we used to say in country, it's not a great war, but it's the only one we have.

I agree, the lyrics are off a bit. Still, she sure can sing! God Bless America!

  • SEMPER-FI MY BROTHERS

Tomorrow 3/31/10 my Marine Corps League renders honors to a fallen brother from obama's war in Afghanistan. I would feel much better if we didn't have a Communist Muslim in the White House and as CinC

  • Our troops are the bravest & most well trained in the world! It's a crime that they were ordered to fight & die in SE Asia. Our government has spit on their graves by handing our jobs & factories to the Chinese communists who killed our brave men in Vietnam & Korea. Our politicians are murderers & traitors.

  • @railbuggy You are right!

  • Gives me goosebumps listening to this. Wish the country was as patriotic now as back then. More people looking for handouts than serving unfortunately. God bless all our troops.

  • The only people on the Earth who can feel and understand the spirit of this hymn in their hearts, are the men and women who have worn the eagle, globe and anchor of the United States Marine Corps. Semper Fidelis, Marines!

  • Amen, @omnistuff!!! God Bless and Keep America Free and God Bless & Keep safe all our fine young men and women who serve our great country. Thanks to all who have or are currently serving. As for the lowlife scum like "jesusdrinks", they are nothing but VERMIN! Semper Fi, Marines!

  • OOH RAH DEVIL DOG!!

  • @omnistuff NOBODY could say it better.Semper Fi!

  • God Bless The USMC

    Semper Fi

  • God Bless all of you who served, were wounded, and those who gave your final devotion for our country. May we never forget you!

  • I was only 10 when WWII begain, my father ran from the house yealling "The Japs have Bombed Pear Harbor!" Then came the years of war and Kate Smith singing This and God Bless America ... Well, she was the greatest

  • to jesusdrinkssemen: You are probably the most unintelligent person I have yet to come across. Other countries yell and beg us to come help them when things go wrong or some disaster but if something happens to us...nobody asks or comes to help. They begged us to leave Korea so we pulled out and lost of shops closed. We helped your economy when there. We are the first ones to respond and help. We gain nothing helping out at disasters but we help anyways.

  • @JesusDrinksSemen you couldnt tell your arse from anywhere. That may have been true in Korea, Nam, and now that it is political and moneygrabbing, but then we fought for the freedom of all mankind. Our troops from all areas fought with their souls, and many have paid even now.

  • Damn! The old version. No air. Just land and on the sea.

  • i myself am a Marine. i love this song. i remember standing in formation during certain events and hoping that the band would come close enough so i could hear it loud and clear.

  • God Bless the Marines!!! Semper Fi brothers

  • @queeto51 Semper Fi forever

  • @BushMass

    Which part?

  • @gramophoneshane the first verse is way off :/ wonder why she sang it that way

  • @sarcoed - It's the old version. It changed in the mid 1950s or so.

  • @gramophoneshane Nothing after the fourth line in the first verse is in the Marine Hymn. I don't know where she got those lyrics.

    USMC Viet Vet.

  • you are right. some of them are.

  • @BushMass

These are the lyrics from the "original" Marines Hymn. One of the commandants in the 1930's or 40's authorized it to be changed to the present version.

These is the first time I have ever heard a recorded version of the original. Nice find.

  • These are the correct lyrics for the era -1940's

Check your history and check the movie "From the Shores of Tripoli"

Randolf Scott, John Agar and Maureen O'Hara

Sgt Bob USMC 1955 - 1963 and for life

  • @BushMass The lyrics aren't wrong, they were changed in November of 1942 and approved by the Commandant to the current lyrics. Semper Fi!

  • @BushMass Lyrics are correct. The version being sung is the pre-1929 version.

  • @BushMass

The words are correct - depends on which verse is being sung

most people know the first verse "From the Halls"

There are four verses most people think that are only three

  • @fng1966 The official Marines' Hymn only has three verses, not four (though over the years some have authored fourth verses to fit units, battles' events, etc...)

  • @BushMass The first verse is different, I know pre WWII they didnt have "On land air and sea" It was just "On the land as well as sea" I dont know if the pre-WWII first verse was that which was sung though. The second verse is correct though.

  • @BushMass Actually, they are quite correct for the period. The lyrics you're referencing a more recent.

  • @BushMass The lyrics were different at the time she sung them.

  • I thnik she used to sing "God Bless America" before every Philly Flyers game too. Semper Fi

  • Happy birthday, fellow Marines.Semper Fi!234 yrs.

  • Thanks Bro! Dutifully and respectfully posted on the ANGLICO forum!

    S/F

    Nightcover 14B

  • HOOORAH

  • Please submit your best female performer and most will pick Kate Smith. Too bad she is often only associated with God Bless America.

  • Different yes..But I like...

  • hmm, it seems the hymn was very different back then

  • You're almost right AmericanNinja1981. The lyrics were revised in 1929. Apparently the then commandant considered the lyrics too boastful for the other services. In my humble opinion, the commandant was wrong and the lyrics were right: "Admiration of the nation, we're the finest ever seen and we glory in the title of United States Marine." I gloried in the title for 23-years and I now glory in the title of Retired United States Marine.

  • You get 5 stars for the song and 5 more for Kate Smith!
