  • I can't get people to even try this game out even though it's story, conveyance of emotions and events are far better than any JRPG today.

  • For its time; probably the greatest RPG ever.

  • is there anykind of save feature?

  • @MisterMinnesota Yes there is in both version (Genesis and PS) its one of the greatest rpg of its time. Definitely comparable too ff7

  • @Draxsiss aaah. thanks, did the first phantasy star save, do you know?

  • You know I never even thought about the weapon thing in this game. It was just so obviuously. You make it to the next town the shit is better. Just like every other old school rpg.

  • I'm not into the rpg genre, but I collect sega genesis stuff and this looks very good, Is it very long? That's really a very important Issue for me because I want to add some variety to my collection that is made, mostly, of arcade like games. unfortunately this is one of the most expensive Sega genesis games to get nowadays.

  • this game has phenomenal music! it reminds me of my college years (in the early 2000s), playing this game, while eating taco bell and pulling all-nighters with studying and playing, haha. nice vid mister benzo!

  • I wish someone would do a playthrough with commentay on this game...The commycowboys playthrough sucks.

  • You havn't been to Uzo yet,

  • PSIV will always be my favorite Megadrive game (tied with Shining Force 2 and Landstalker).

I consider myself very lucky to grew up with the series in my childhood. Since there was no Final Fantasy game til VII or Dragon Quest til VIII Phantasy Star was the only big JRPG series that Australian's had at the time.

I bought the Ultimate Megadrive collection purely for the Phantasy Star (and Shining Force) series.

  • i love the boss battles tune in this game. This is a great game, my 2nd rpg i played , it made me like the genre a lot.

  • i like this one but liked shadowrun more

  • I love this review and love playing this on the ps2 on the classics, hopefully the lvl 99 glitch wont/doesnt happen on the one on the classics for the ps2 like the genesis original.

  • old but a good game

  • @adrianosantos999 geneisis classics on the ps2 its one you can play and its my fav PS game!

  • I really enjoyed this review. Love the artwork on this game and i think PS4 will be just as playable 20 years down the line. You're right about Sega, they did a fantastic job here. For me personally, the best rpg on the system.

  • great review, I'm definitely gonna look into getting Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection

  • Love this game.

Genesis went out with a bang.

  • oh well, cant please everyone, it was a request from a friend that i made in the last minute and didnt have time to re-play the entire game to show more footage, only what was available to me at the time. If you dont like then you review it.

  • I'm not sure why, but as I'm wrapping up Phantasy Star IV, I just feel like it doesn't have quite the atmosphere of I or II. I think I might prefer those games. They're more deliberate and their environments seem more memorable.

But I can't pinpoint what's...off about PS IV. It may just be one of those fantastic games that I'm never going to like as much as I should. That said, PS II STILL takes the cake when it comes to the music--even though IV has some catchy tunes.

  • Yes man,I tottaly understand.

But it´s good to see a phantasy star 4 review on youtube, and comparing to the ones I´ve seen on other sites it´s actually pretty decent.

Oh,and I agree that they were decent, but earthbound was never really my cup of tea...found it a little too childish for my tastes.

Anyway man, cheers and keep up the good work.

  • This was the best rpg on the mega drive(shining force 2 was also great)an in my humble opinion was better than most of the snes rpg´s(such as earthbound and some ff games).

As for your review,it is good but a game like this cannot be reviewed in 6minutes...there was so many things you left out such as the background story, the lik between ps4 and ps1 & 2,the battle combos(quite a unique feat)rykros did not appeared in your review as well,etc...

This is only an observation, not a critique.

    Cheers.

  • its cool man, and i actualy agree with you, unfortunatly i kind of rushed this review and it was one of my first one's so i didnt really have the editing and stuff down yet either.

  • @benzo8686 don't forget the awsome manga-comic like ''cutscenes''... ^_^ anyway, great review *thumbs up*

  • i havnt played this game but come on the graphics arnt that good by any measure nor is the music

  • I think they where pretty decent for their time

  • Considering the time and the console you can't expect much more. People don't take that into consideration. And I thought the music was really nice overall. I would say that this person was born during the 32-bit era and simply doesn't understand these nuances, but judging by their name... they should know better. Rastan was a great arcade game.

  • @rastan1977 Phantasy Star IV's graphics, for its day, were brilliant. As was the music. Games don't have to be HD or 3D to be good. I still regard Chrono Trigger to be one of the most graphically beautiful games ever made, and it still has one of the best video game sound tracks ever composed.

  • @widdowson91 im not 1 of those that knock the old school hard ware.Im more impressed by the old games due to growing up with them. These graphics dont impress me even for the time, ive seen great graphics on the megadrive, maybe it was the size of the game that resticted them. Carnt wait to start on it tho asoon as ive finished 1 and 2.

  • @rastan1977 OK fair enough, I mis-took you for one of those many 'Oh HD rulez and 2D is shit' people that you get today. In a way I see what you mean though, the Sonic games look miles better, as does The Story of Thor. But yeah Phantasy Star IV was massive back in the day so maybe that did affect it?

  • Good review man

  • the best RPG on the genesis, perhaps even ever

  • I dont think that is a stretch at all. It IS IMO. This is My Fave of the Phantasy Star series the music graphics story and everything about it is Top Notch

  • I never had any Sega systems growing up, I was all Nintendo... I'll probably pick up Sonic's Collection soon.. these games look amazing.. great review btw

  • great game great review : D

  • One of my favourite games ever! ! !

    Great review, keep it up!

  • nice one of my FAV sega series! i am still working on beating phantasy star 1, want to beat them all :D

  • I just got the Sonics Ultimate Collection today, but I still want to get this along with the other ones for the Genesis. Awesome review

  • thanks man!

  • I own this game on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection!

  • Hey dude, great review. One question. When you battle enemies while in a vehicle and get experience, does your vehicle get the EXP or do your characters?

Essentially what I'm asking is, does your vehicle gain levels?

  • great review, keep going like that and you will soon hit one thousand subs.

  • is this game expensive or hard to find now.

  • well you could find it on ebay for the genesis complete for about $25.00, Your best bet would to get either, The Sega Genesis collection for the ps2 which has PS 2,3,4, along with many others for about $15.00 OR Sonics Ultimate genesis collection with ps 1,2,3,4, and many others for the 360 or ps3 for about $30.00.

  • Great review.

  • Your reviews keep getting better, good review of a classic game.

  • no way... i just started a new game of this lmfao

  • great review the phantasy star series is the sole reason that i bought the sega genesis collection ps3/360 because it has all 4 but i was surprised to discover the awesomeness of the shining force series as well of course i would like to have the original genesis but for now i love the genesis collection

  • Gotta love classic Phantasy Star, a really underrated series.

You should have mentioned that the game is in the Sega Genesis collection for PS2, and the the Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection on PS3/ 360 so people who are new to the series can pick it up.

    Anyways great review man!

  • Yeah i know but i was strapped for time when i was doing the audio, i threw it in the info bar though =)

  • great review. I need to get my hands on a hard copy of this game.

  • I've got about 8 hours in this, on the genesis collection version. Its the first out of the four, iv'e played liked it alot just got sidetracked.

    btw great review!

  • Enjoyed the review man.Love those graphics!

  • thanks for the review, really enjoyed it!

  • i could never get into the other phantasy stars, this however was fantastic, i really enjoyed the story, but combing the tech abilities was brilliant

  • Great review of a great game, I am yet to complete it but I am not far off, I am like that with a lot of games at the moment.

  • Great review

  • This game looks really good. :D

  • wow a true classic game. i like ps4 better i played it a little but what a great game. btw what do you think about the newer ones like phantasy star universe? etc great review my friend :)

  • meh, I really lost touch with the series after PS Online for the Dreamcast, but the first 4 are hands down the best IMO. Hell, i even enjoyed 3 for the most part =0 lol
