I know there are thousands to choose from, but I think the whole 'the Queen is not dead' gag might be my favourite ever from an episode of I'm Alan Partridge. It just sums up the series and the character so perfectly; his ridiculous on-air persona and his stubbornly pedantic literalism. Pure genius.

You've mixed up series 1 & series 2. In series 1, he works at the hotel. In series 2, he works at the gas station. You must have watched series 2 Ep1, then switched to the series 1 episodes.

He works at the hotel in series 1. In series 2 when Alan doesn't stay in the Hotel anymore, it is explained that Michael loses his job and joins the petrol station. :D
