And what about when they renact what really happened when the real Mrs swaps herself for the dark headed girl that killed the brother by the gate. The dark headed girl is seen falling onto the spiked fence landing on her back. But...when Paul MacGanning (?) picks up his wife and drops the dark-headed girl on the ground there is no puncture wounds in the dark headed girls back!!! Whoooopppsie. hahaha.
The murder in the 80s really ruins the episode for me. Its not believable that they would kill him just because there is a 10s struggle to pry the keys off him and he poses no threat to them at all!
Thank you for posting all these. I have now watched every Jonathan Creek episode ever made, and If I ever find the dvd box set in a store, I'll definitely be springing for it. I LOVE Alan Davies.
But now, despite previously disliking the character, I hope they do bring back Caroline Quentin for a special. It would be SO great to see her interacting with 'Jonathan' again-- and maybe there'd be a new dynamic there, what with both of the characters having time apart to grow.
Well, this was...interesting. The framed murder itself was clever, despite the number of things that could have gone wrong. But what was the point of the house facade bit? And what on earth were those two injecting into that tree? o.O
@MintyInTheSky It's what's known in the mystery-writing business as a "red herring." I'm doubtful that the event ever really happened; it was probably the girl's subconscious way of blocking the real incident.
They were injecting some sort of antibiotics, or vitamins, or something to keep the tree healthy.
am i to understand that at the end of this episode? JC and co are happy to let the girl pay for the crime she committed in the 80's? and let the husband and wife go free?
Heyguys; do we know if we get any more of these???? Jc rocks. this one was reallly good; as good as the old ones with Caroline, in a way. PLUs it had Paul McGann. and Alan was deliciously snarky.
So many things that people don't seem to get about this episode. I'll give you that it does seem a bit odd they didn't go to the police when they realised the woman was still alive but:
The girls at the start wanted to highjack a car, because that's the kind of thing idiot teenagers did in the 80s and killing the man was just a spur of the moment thing because he was fighting back (also the kind of thing idiots do)
The tree was probably planted as a memorial for him, hence its significance..
@snapefanno1 The blonde girl wasn't arrested for the man's murder at the beginning, but for the murder of the wife (as all the evidence they had at the time pointed to her being the culprit and being a bit insane thus denying she had done it)
There was nothing to suggest the husband killed the vicar, it was a dramatic shot to show he hadn't been arrested when they found out that he had planned the set-up of the blonde girl.
The only plothole is that they didn't go to the police...
@snapefanno1 when they found the wife alive and realised the set-up. Maybe they just thought that overall justice had been paid, as the girls had murdered the brother at the start. Dunno about that bit.
it doesn't make sense that the blonde woman went down for killing that man as she was already found not guilty and you cant be tried for the same crime twice its call double jepardy and what is paul magann doing at the funeral didnt he and his wife go down for their crimes? side note there is a gud film called double jepardy u shud check it out but i do love JC
@bluesmurfs87 she didn't go down for killing the man, she went down for killing the woman... which we know she didn't do, but the whole thing was set up so she would be punished for helping kill the handicapped boy at the start. while the police and jury thought she was being punished for killing the woman, the woman and her husband had set the whole thing up so she would be punished for killing the boy. do you see?
'he survived just long enough to paint a picture'? Even if (if) he didn't survive to the court case, what did they think happended? A rock fell on him as he buried himslef in the bushes?
Why did he take the injection out at the house? Why did the wife care so much about revenge? So, she had a scream to pierce glass but never thought about...doing it until the professer brought it up?
This almost seems deliberately bad. I think Renwick is trying to kill Creek off with shitty story lines, gaping plot holes, and pointless anachronisms. This is the worst Creek yet!
Which means it was still awesome! Try harder David.
JC is always fun to watch but I miss Julia Sawalha and this one was very oddly plotted and laid out. The explanation for the disappearing house is sort of clever but also a bit contrived. Maybe I missed something but am I to understand that since we see Paul McGann's character at the funeral, no one turned him in to the authorities? I know Sherlock Holmes occasionally took the law into his own hands but this seemed a bit much even if there was some sort of ruthless justification for the crimes.
@SurlyInsomniac If you notice there are a couple of episodes where JC and his fabulous assistant don't seem to tell the police of a crime. It's sort of left open ended as to whether they kept quiet about the whole thing.
This is a weird episode. My first thought when the couple confessed the murder was that they'd have to get rid of Creek and Co. But they just let them go and assumed no one would believe them. And that old woman should've known better than to set the 4 of them up like that.
love JC n the story line was good but left alot of loose ends in the story like the brother who came out of nowhere from the story n y kill him. n the tree y was it special the brother was killed in the road n had nothing to do with the tree, n the girl in the cell did they leeve her despite the evidence or was she held4 the brother n also right at the end the guys in the church how come hes not arrested if they told n whats with the inkling that he killed the vicar??lots ofQs left open in this1
I thought it was a deliberate mistake to have the murder set in the 1980s and yet have some very obvious close up shots of a digital car stereo from 2010?!
Why did they kill his brother anyway? What did they want from him, the car? Even if their car broke down they had no reason for murder. And if it was money they could have got it a lot easier without killing anyone. I really don't understand!
@rc150 I completely agree with you. It doesn't make any sense. Even the returning to the tree is kind of lame. I love JC, but his one was pretty damn weak.
And what about when they renact what really happened when the real Mrs swaps herself for the dark headed girl that killed the brother by the gate. What a cheap wrap-up. Instead of connecting elements established earlier on, there's suddenly all kinds of new information to 'explain' things.

@MisterHooch You cna be mentally younger than average, and still be able to drive. IT depends.
