  • i love johnny rocking the drums!!

  • jonny's busy

  • When radiohead changes songs a bit from their live to studio versions, i never even consider them the same...to me the live and studio versions are just two more beautiful masterpieces

  • I WAS THERE! best radiohead show i have seen! i still can't believe i was lucky enough to get tickets, they sold out in a blink of an eye, and were being resold for hundreds. such a small venue for a radiohead show, i remember looking forward to this show, knowing we would hear some new unreleased material. one of the best and most anticipated bands of all time.

  • I hope they start playing this again.

  • Damn this one BLOWWS the album version away!

  • where was this show at?

  • i think they all can play play any instrument on any song

  • @elurseeknay yeh its awesome how they all of them are not stuck on one instrument all the time, they swap around and have fun. and all of them are self taught! only jonny took viola lessons as a kid, and thom still can't read music!

    All hail Radiohead.

  • I think it's fascinating, that despite Radiohead's undeniable accomplishments in the studio, not even they could recreate the quality of their natural live performances as seen here, and this is perhaps one of those unusual examples where the live version outshines the 'definitive' album version. Nothing usual for Radiohead though is it.

  • would have been one of their very best songs if they recorded it with this style and energy

  • theyre getting some cardio

  • This song is now forever purple to me. amazing!

  • like 100 times better than album version

  • I love this version way better then the studio version.

  • good video dude! awesome sound quality as well. what did u record this on?

  • awesome

  • jonny in drum! yeah!

  • van a tocar aqui en 2 días SI SEÑOR!!

  • This song has amazing drums.

  • Hmmm Jonny really likes that coin picking like here or in house of cards, or high and Dry of course.

  • actually it sounds more like a really short delay

  • can someone tell me what guitar effect is johnny using in this song? and is it possible to achieve it in Guitar Rig 3 for example

  • Thats just a pure Tele Plus with a bit reverb

  • studio version sucks.

  • It doesnt suck, but i prefer this version too. The piano version is incredible, too...

  • i don't know. i just heard this version first and i expected real dynamic song with Jonny's guitar and drums in album version.

  • edit- I know they've played other second disk songs aswell.

  • Did they play this song at all on their 2008 tour? They played Bangers n' mash in Vancouver.

  • they didnt play it once unfortunately. hopefully they will for the next tour.

  • Live version or studio version? You pick, I can't.

  • Definitely one of the best songs they've ever written.

  • this song really is amazing!

  • and any band that switches instruments halfway through the song is incredible in my book

  • I love Jonny

  • I like this way more than the studio version.

  • I agree completely... I think they didn't like IR version too, so they put it in the B-sides disc...

  • in rainbows two is not a b-sides disc

  • it is, radiohead said so...

  • CD2 isn't a b-side you cocksmack. Radiohead did not say so. Listen to Videotape and then listen to Mk 1..notice how they blend into each other perfectly?

  • you're completely wrong dude, mk1 is just a b-side of videotape... radiohead said so, go searching the interview on the web...

  • what does it matter if its a b-side or not...its not the label, its the music people...comon...btw this song is fuckin awesome!!!

  • i agree

  • its cuz its disc two not a b-side

  • i agree also,its a lot darker......

  • Gotta love the studio version, but the lack of guitar makes the piano transition REALLY lose its pop, you know?

  • hit the nail on the fucking head

  • jonny on the drums just adds that extra effect of greatness.

  • i hope they play it this way, when i see them in berlin in july. woooooooohoooooo this will be the best day ever

  • this is mi favourite song of radiohead they are the best band ever

  • god i love it when the piano comes in, its full of such power. i can see why they chose the piano version on the album though, if they had the piano kick in at that point in the album the strings would have been overshadowed, and those stings are pretty intense

  • agreed, this is much better than the album version. i like that version but hopefully they will this version when they tour.

  • live is so much better than the album version. love the beatboxing and drums. sounds a lot funkier.

  • wow, what a kickin' drum groove too! especially right after the piano portion

  • i first saw the thom yorke solo version of this and i wasn't a huge fan of the song so i was initially skeptical of this live version but wow! it's awesome and significantly different.

  • Jonny doesn't stop man

  • ohh they really rock live!

  • Anyone have a live Down Is the New Up mp3? I like the live version better, more intense...

Though the studio version is growing on me!

  • I have a live version of it. sound quality is superb too. it's the MSG version I have... which I personaly think is without doubt the best performance of the song.

  • phenomenal

  • studio version is charmingly trippy. sooooo good

  • Well I downloaded CD2 :) I suggest you do the same. The studio version of Down Is The New Up is fucking AMAZING. Holy shit I can't understand how humans can write such music.

  • I was at the show . Cant wait to see them agian.

  • November 27th. DISC 2 IS APPROACHING!!!

  • At the oddest times during any given day Im thinking "topsy-turvy town, topsy-turvy town, shake your pockets out." Why?!?!

  • i know exactly what you mean, it happens to me all day too

  • hahah!!!!! Look at Johnny rock the drums!!!!

  • Radiohead always puts a smile on my face.

  • Come on December 3rd...

  • This song is fucking cool.

The discbox can't get here soon enough...

  • this is fucking belter of a song. i just hope the studio version lives up to the live one

  • thom said in an interview a couple days ago that the studio version was pretty amazing and that it was really hard not to put it on in rainbows.

that just made me more excited for december 3!

  • Live videotape was too busy. Great closer. And this is real fuckin' tasty. A full plate of awesome-tastic!

  • This version is ten times better than the solo piano one. This is the best hardcore song they'ev done since anything on OK COMPUTER, so I pray it's not the solo piano one they put on the second disc.

  • me too, i was disappointed that they changed videotape so much (it was the only song on disc one i was disappointed with though), i just hope they haven't changed this one that much.

  • I think The National Anthem qualifies as a hardcore song and it's much more complex than this one. I love both songs so it's all good.

  • Slightly dissapointed this didn't make In Rainbows (CD1).

  • If you haven't heard the album yet, go listen to it!

  • I think I like the piano version better...

    Still, awesome song.

  • they seem like two completely different songs... piano version he sounds really pissed off at orwell, seems so dark. this one is like upbeat, jazzy and stuff..

  • Or they meant the middle and forefinger on one hand, with your palm facing toward you, which is essentially flipping a person off in England.

  • what the hell, this version is even better.

  • pretty disappointed that this song isn't on the main album, ah well, i expect i'll get hold of the bonus disk eventually. I'm so glad radiohead went with the payment scheme they did, a nice big two fingers up at the record industry. hopefully more bands will start doing it, and put the money grabbing record companies out of business once and for all

  • fingers? middle fingers? oh thumbs, sorry. the payment scheme is pretty cool, lets see what happens.I think this scheme can only work for bands that are already famous though, new bands would have little chance to keep making music without getting any money.

  • No, he meant two big middle fingers pointed at the record companies.

  • oh, that way

  • LP7 is being released! It's called In Rainbows. Download it FREE off Radiohead's official website! Yes, you get to choose how much to pay for the download. You can get it free if you want. I went for the 40 euro disc box set, and I added 5 euro for the download because I love all 5 of those people in Radiohead. Go get it October 10th!

  • You do know the discbox includes the download right? And why not add a sixth euro for Nigel if that's your shtick?

  • Ah well I forgot the ol' Nigel. I'm sure Thom is willing to give his euro to Nigel, so it's all good.

  • FORGOT NIGEL!?! WHAT!? lol. yeah, nigel is pretty amazing.

  • Like I said, I'm sure Thom is going to share his pound with nigel *awkward laugh* err well got to go!

  • Sure you have a copy of the album. I believe you. We all believe you. Fucking scum.

  • Oh you just have to believe me! You just have too, I promise I promise I promise!

  • I think it's a really good idea that Radiohead is releasing this in early 2008. It'll go triple platinum, album of the year, sell bloody MILLIONS of copies worldwide, it'll be classified in the 100 best albums of all time. Mark my words, I guarantee it!

  • thet will get album of the year

  • You know, ever since I've been watching these videos, all the old albums on my iPod don't cut it for me anymore. This song is so amazing, specially when Thom is like ''Down is the new up, is the new UUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHH-AAAAAAAH----UP'' Then when the keyboard kicks in. Then Jonny's rough ass strumming. LOVING IT

  • man if they dont release this album soon im gonna tax all there songs and make my own millions!! cmon!!!

  • Radiohead went Reggeaton! lol..Dug the new tune.

  • I promised myself I wouldn't listen to their new stuff anymore because I wanted it to sound new when the new LP came out but I can't help it.

  • the age of a piece of music does not define it

  • I feel your pain man. I can't help but listen to these songs over and over.

  • OMG Radiohead are so like totally amazin:). Wif them, Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte the music scene is lookin' off da hook.....lol I couldn't keep that up for much longer. The other two are obviously shit. Down is the New Up, House of Cards, 15 Step and Open pick among my favourites of the new material.

  • who's doing the back up at the end "you crawled off...."?

  • ed. he sings the lead near the very end.

  • guess who

  • This is my fave so far. What a tune!

  • Incredible drumming at the end of the song... This song NEEDS to make the cut for LP7!! I can't wait!!

  • Oh, it will. It has to!!

  • the song is on the LP

  • Yes, the drumming at the end is great. I can't help but wonder if it's a nod to the Amen Brother. I think it's my fav of the new songs.

  • When the piano enters at 2:08 .. pure extassy !

  • man, yea, thats exactly when i got the rush. the piano and then the drums coming over it

  • probably my favorite new song... ahh i miss them.

  • Jonny's amazing :D They're all great!!

  • i mean look at this, jonny is rocking the drums

  • this kicks ass, there new stuff is looking seriously good

  • I had read something, somewhere on the internet (maybe Dead Air Space) about how Jonny had been listening to nothing but dub reggae for several months. So that explains the sudden funkiness.

  • Have you heard his Reggae compilation cd? I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but I had to check it out. It's intriguing. Still not my cup of tea, but not too bad!

  • blah.. this isn't that good. the piano version is more haunting.

  • Excellent stuff. Fell in love with just thom and the piano in the basement, this just takes that up a notch. Their slowly turning.....funky. Cant wait for LP7

  • weak

  • Weak?? Get a new set of ears, son. LP7 is going to be absolutely amazing.

  • it's just european dub/lounge played with live instruments. fun, but not new!

  • Yeah, but it still rocks.

  • haha...

please explain to me how this is lounge.

  • its so badass to see jonny on the drums rockin it with phil

  • Oh, yeah.....ITS GONNA KICK YOU IN THE FACE!

  • I love Phil's beat on this one.

  • About that Ed thingy

He does play good stuff, and he is an excellent singer. So stop thinking him being extra or anything, because that's not true.

  • i agree with you, he is also a great drummer. ed is definately not an extra at all

  • yeah, Ed wrote the main riff in Street Spirit.

  • This is definitely one of my favorites of the new material... can't wait to hear what it sounds like on the album. Gotta love Jonny playin the drums!

  • Funk a la Radiohead = lush-funk. Brilliant. One of their best. Hope to listen to it on the new record

  • i prefer this version over the one that was in the new video where thom plays the piano

  • that's actually the older of the versions. i think that version was recorded in february of 06.

  • what i meant is that he is kinda an extra in some songs.. of course he's important you paranoids!

ahora lo que quise decir es que ed está de sobra en varios temas.. osea solo hace ruiditos, que suman, claro pero debe ser un embole (aburrimiento) para èl

  • Even as an "extra" ,as you call it, in some songs, he still colors the songs, and it truly makes the sons. Without him, most of the songs would be quite boring, which is way I don't like most acoustic Radiohead performances with just Thom and Jonny. They need Ed's cool effects, Colin's excellent bass and Phil's precise drumming.

  • wow... Radiohead's new material is even better than the "glory days" of ok computer. These songs are a lot more fun - danceable, almost, than their previous work.

  • i agree!! Radiohead makes the best dance music :P

  • yup, if you see a video of their performance on the jonathan ross show where they do there there and fake plastic trees, ross challenges them to write a more "up" album. so maybe they're getting on that while still keeping it radiohead.

  • down is the new uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup

  • There WOULDN`T be a radiohead without ed. end of story.

  • I think of Ed as the special effects dude. He makes the song really shine - the songs would still be good without him, but nowhere near as awesome as they actually are with him. Talk Show Host - live, he does all those ghostly sounds with his guitar and effects pedals (and I don't mean the keyboards Jonny plays live). Ed is an important member or the band, he always has been.

  • ed plays guitar no more.. he just does the back up vocals in the new songs or little noises that are only a detail. poor ed he plays second guitar in every song except when thoms plays guitar too... in that case he plays the 3rd guitar.

  • He's a very important member. He uses his guitar to get echoes and stuff that make the song sound so awesome. Without Ed they'd be pretty plain.

  • as well as all that ed wrote alot of the songs, karma police for example, and the 'in limbo' guitar riff. the guy makes a massive difference to radiohead

  • true.

but he did right that riff to street spirit!

that must be why he's still around......

  • wow, myxodrifts, you are pretty clueless, congrats. =|

  • o gosh i just pooped my pants

  • awesome

  • this is so tight.

  • wowza's, jonnys play drums at the end, and with thom on drums in bangers, wierd but good, usually dont see two drummers in a song

  • You obviously haven't seen 'There, There' live. OMG THREE DRUMMERS!!!

  • there, there live is the best live radiohead song as well as the national anthem and idioteque

  • Wow. This song is amazing.

It's my favorite of the new material. Actually, I think it's tied with 15 Step.

Can't wait for the new album. Actually, I can since I'm going to have to.

  • It seems like this could be the best Radiohead album yet. I dunno, it sounds like a mix between OK Computer-Radiohead, with Kid A-Radiohead production, and elements of Jazz and Stone Roses/ Happy Mondays style dance-rock stuff. It could be really brilliant.

  • plus, this song has Phil AND Jonny on drums. How badass is that.

  • nigel produced both kid a and ok comp

  • Yeah but the production is completely different on both of them.

  • the best version ever heard!!

  • this will be wicked on *CD*

    (nag, nag, nag)

  • RUUD GULLIT

  • Thom York and Bjork should have a baby even if for nothing more than the sake of the songwriter he or she could end up being...

  • Caught on Candid Camera

    The chink in your armor

Topsy turvy town, topsy turvy town

    Shake your pockets out

Pass it on, pass it down

Topsy turvy town, topsy turvy town

    =)

  • i think thom took some dancing classes

  • This show was PHENOMENAL!! I was actually there (lucky enough to nab tickets before it sold out!!). This was my sixth Radiohead show, and I think they're the best band to see live. (I've been to over 100 concerts and Radiohead beats them all =)

  • awwesome song! This album is gonna be great, anyone know the expected release approximately?

  • mid 2007 if i could guess.

  • What does ed actually do in this song?

Apart from his cheesy line of course

  • paranoidandroid23, ed is usually responsible for the majority of wierd background noises and ambiance during songs when nothing blatant is apparent.

  • which is what makes radiohead the shiz nizzle bam bizzle

  • possibly the best radiohead song ever made

  • hot damn!!!

  • Jonny is playing the drums, awesome.

    Loved the new song.

  • really wish that they played this in boston

  • my only beef is that the song doesnt finish

  • yeah, sorry about that. i was more worried about saving room on my memory card to take TONS of videos the second night, but as soon as the show started, i got yelled at by security to stop filming (see airbag).

hopefully we will have a new album soon though, right? :-P

  • thats because they have nt finished making the song yet, its in progress for possibility on the new album
