Who gives a rip what church fathers say? Go back to scripture, people. For any one thing a church father says, there's almost always another church father to contradict him.
Mark is one of the few teachers left who has rock solid biblical teaching. At least foundationally. It's not grounded in tradition, culture, or opinion. It's grounded in scripture. If you're church isn't grounded like that, beware.

Is belief in substitutionary atonement a boundary marker of orthodoxy? Perhaps. Is penal substitutionary atonement a boundary marker of orthodoxy? Emphatically no!!! are you guys really doing this right now? all I'm going to add is that Jesus was Black and White, stop trying to add grey areas and think it is fine to reinterpret what lust is, because you're only lying to yourself.
@TheInfamousPaki And the sex that God approves is within marriage. im pretty sure that most married people do not use masturbation in the bed room because there is obviously better alternatives. I myself try not to think of those things until i am married.
@TheInfamousPaki However there maybe just maybe a case where two married people find it pleasurable to masturbate to each other (sorry about the graphic talk) i dont kno because i am not married nor do i have sex. however what i am trying to say here is mark is simply saying lust is wrong. Masturbating can be wrong because 99.9% of the time people lust while the practice it. He is simply saying the actual act of masturbating might be ok if it is used like any other form of sex that pleases God.
@TheInfamousPaki ok everybody is misunderstanding what i am saying here and i believe they are making the same mistake with what mark said. Ok you are exactly right. In 99.9% of cases masturbation is wrong. if you are unmarried like myself there is probably no way masturbating can be good. I know myself there would be no way i could masturbate without lust which is why i dont do it. Unless it is possible to do it without lusting then it is wrong. That is what mark is saying.
I have seen Joel Osteen get persecuted and attack so much for preaching the Gospel. I have even heard you accuse him of preaching heresy. Is it that his boldness and clarity has brought him attention and critics? Please give links to your critic.
@leeshelton11 Olsteen is often accused as being a heretic because of his presentation of the Gospel. Rarely have I seen him accurately speak from the scriptures, but rather I see him sugar coating many things. On nighline or Larry King he was asked if Jesus is the only way, and he dodged the question and basically in a nutshell said no. That's kind of a big deal, and shows a lack of proper understanding of scripture. What would Paul say if you told him God wanted you to be rich? The guy was poor
Since Mark is one of the self-deceived who teaches false doctrines himself, he doesn't even recognize that the terms he's using actually apply to himself. Mark preaches a false gospel ie, "Repent for Christ MIGHT have died for you"& he promotes a deity who is a megalomaniac who creates & destroys the helpless for the sole purpose of self-glorification - a far cry from the loving Heavenly Father of the bible Who desires that NONE should perish but that ALL should turn to repentance.
@heathcoat67 The content corresponds to dozens of others saying the same thing. 1Tim2:4 "Who desires that ALL men be saved" Acts10:43 Whosoever believes in Him shall receive remission of sins, 1Jn2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins...also for the sins of the whole world, Acts17:30 now God commands all men everywhere to repent.. 1Tim4:10 Who is the Savior of all men, especially those who believe, Titus2:11 the grace of God has appeared to all men, etc, Read the bible, YOU might be surprised.
@JackMWolfe None of those actually say that all will be saved however. By contrast, there are many verses which claim that few/not all will be saved. John 3:18, 36; Romans 3:1-26; 8:1-11; 8:28-30; 9:1-29; Matt 7:13-29 are good places to start.
This guy can't even shave or throw on a button down shirt or a sport jacket to talk formally about Jesus? Nobody wants to hear your message if you can't even bother to show your listener basic respect by not looking like a slob.
@Proverbs1x26refurbed : You're a Pharisee. Do you think John the Baptist looked like a button up, white collar dude. Get real you legalistic pharisee. I can only guess you're a mormon or something very close.
@powderhunter127 Legalistic? Did I say he had to dress up to be saved? No. I said it's respectful to your viewers to take a few minutes to dress nicely. I choose to not listen to these neo-"preachers" who can't demonstrate even basic respect and courtesy.
John the Baptist lived in the wilderness. This guy lives in air conditioned tract housing. I fail to see your comparison.
@Proverbs1x26refurbed Brother, if Mark Driscoll shaved and wore a sport jacket nobody in his mission field and nobody in his church would give him the time of day. You need to understand the culture of the people he's reaching and teaching. If he looked like a slick dressed southern preacher, that would completely turn off the young postmoderns in Seattle he's helping lead to Christ.
@AcornMonk Doesn't it say somewhere in the Bible that "man looks on the outward appearance but God looks on the heart"? I don't know the name of the 'church' he belongs to, but I agree with what he says and his manner of speaking is a welcome change from preachers who shout and yell the pulpit, and jump up and down waving their hands. .
@NobodySpecial85 the bible talks about sex! Jesus talks about sex! the bible says it is a sin to lust! but says nothing about masturbation! Mark Driscoll said it is ok to masturbate within a marriage and as long as your spouse is ok with it! and that you are only thinking of your spouse! Christians need to talk about sex more because so many are lead the wrong way! Mark is by no means perfect but he only teaches what Jesus teaches!
@Stinkko Jesus never gets into specific details revolving around sex within a marriage. at least from what we know. Jesus never said it was ok to drive a car but we know that is not a sin unless of course you find some way to idolize it, which i guess some people might but none the less it is ok to drive a car. Now Jesus never talks about the physical action of masturbation. He only talks about about lust after someone who is not your spouse.
i think masturbation is a very dangerous self service that may end with the individual being tempted into lustful thoughts, pornography, or perversion.
what the devil does is takes gods word manipulates it into something its not.
saying god said when he didnt. or viceversa
so no, im not dishing out commandments.
but as discerning as best i can i would say avoid it at all measures
@Stinkko So jesus never said it was ok to masturbate within marriage yet he never said it wasnt ok. So Mark has to be careful because if he says that it is not ok to masturbate within marriage he might be making up his own rules with goes against scripture which is a sin. I myself do not think i will ever consider masturbation in my marriage. God has clearly made a better way. However if another couple finds it pleasurable within marriage so be it. Mark is not perfect however i think he is right
@gallegs7 Driscoll did not say it's ok to masturbate within marriage while your in one room, and your wife is elsewhere. What your saying here could be taken as very misleading. The Bible talks about sex in Song of Songs (Solomon). Jesus does not talk about sex specifically. The closest thing I can think regarded as that is Jesus talking about lust. While I believe Pastor Driscoll speaks truth, and you should learn from him, nothing replaces your own time with Jesus in the scriptures. :-)
@gallegs7 It talks about bad examples of sexual perversions committed by various people. It talks about avoiding fornication. It talks about not witholding from one another within marriage commitment. The bible DOES address masturbation because fornication is the setting up of a sexual idol in one's heart which is what one does in masturbation. It's deliberately DECEIVING The physiology to make it think sexual intercourse is happening. I don't get my theology from perverts.
@waynefeller I don't see any substance to your post. Only insult. Do you not know that the bible speaks against fornication? And that the word 'pornia' is the one pornograpy is based on? There is never a time to LIE to your physiology and tell it you have having sex when you aren't. Obviously. This is merely an extention of abiding IN THE TRUTH. Jesus is the TRUTH. So yeah I do get it from the Bible. on what basis do you claim otherwise?
@sounddoctorin You are extenuating. Where does the bible say this, not where do you cobble various scriptures together to verify your own belief. Show me in the bible.
@waynefeller IF you are so ignorant that you don't know the abundance of scriptures preaching against fornication then PICK UP THE BIBLE AND READ IT. Yeshua even says that if you LOOK on a woman lustfully you commit adultery in your heart (to the apparently married people listening, and/or the fact that you initially don't know if a woman you see is married.) Do you even know where such common scriptures are? Acts 15 then instructs to avoid fornication in the 'short list' of sins to avoid.
@sounddoctorin But, where does it speak against masturbation? I know what it says on lust. Where does it talk of masturbation? And why are you so rude?
@waynefeller why am I so rude? Dude above you blanket ACCUSE me of having no biblical backing instead of ASKING WHAT I base this one. THAT....is rude. Now what IS masturbation? It's when you DECEIVE your body to think you are having sex! THUS IT IS A TWO FOLD sin. 1) Functionally LYING to the parts of your body. Deceiving them. 2) Lusting in your heart towards something to arouse them.
@sounddoctorin You are right. I could have phrased my post more appropriately. For that I do apologize. As to your position, I still don't see the bible backing up what you say. Where does the bible say that masturbation is deceiving the body into thinking you are having sex? I see nothing to justify that statement. As for lust, yes lust is a sin, and even Mark Driscoll says that. That is why although masturbation itself isn't a sin, it is accompanied by the sin of lust.
@waynefeller wayne, we can read the heart or the legalistic take on anything. EG. the bible doesn't specifically say there is anything wrong with torturing someone. We have to assess things like 'do unto others...' and 'love your enemies..' even. The bible doesn't list every variation of a sin. EXAMINE THE MOTIVE THOUGH. There is a sin called dissipation. NASB uses it. Use blueletter bible and search for it's uses. NOTE how drunkness is a SUBcategory of dissipation. Look up the def.
@waynefeller continuing. If you know physics, you realize the word refers to expending energy that is wasted. Eg. you want to drop power supply voltage for something and instead of doing it the efficient way and making a switching regulator etc. , you simply install a big fat resistor and burn off the energy as heat. Do you see? This is precisely the category masturbation fits into. It does nothing to glorify God. It is purely for hedenistic pleasure. No fruit comes of it. Dissipation.
You have the greater sin of trying to ADD to God's word. You're bashing a guy for being silent where the bible is silent and vocal where it is vocal. Rather than address "lust", like Jesus did, which addresses 99% of masturbation, you just go for "masturbation". You are worldly and don't even know it. Tradition over scripture is your route.
Any honest male will admit if he masturbates, he's not thinking of a "power sander". Any unmarried person trying to argue that they aren't lusting is "probably" lying, otherwise they're just weird. Still, the bible is so meticulously specific, that if it leaves out something obvious out like "don't stimulate your own genitals under any circumstance", its on purpose, and regulated by the context of "lust". SEE CONTEXT: Sex before marriage = bad. Sex with your spouse = good.
@NobodySpecial85 No it doesn't...... It goes with scripture. Have you ever read song of solomn?? I'm guessing no.. Also if you are going to throw some levitcal code in my face to support your argument, you must understand that it has to do with people doing that outside of marriage.. Go stone the next gay you see in the street. Oh wait.. that was abolished with the new covenant (no, don't go telling me that I said homosexualiy isn't a sin, because I never did)
" Let Baudouin abuse me as long as he will, provided that, by the judgment of Melanchthon, posterity owes me a debt of gratitude for having purged the Church of so pernicious a monster." John Calvin in defence of the murder of Servetus who was BURNED AT THE STAKE
Sorry but such a man clearly fails the standards for eldership in the church - an unrepentant murderer
"There's a REASON why Jesus got killed? Is Driscoll actually suggesting it's because Christ and his disciples used strong language? Jesus was SACRIFICED which was Prophesied 2000 years before that's why he got "killed". Why doesn't Driscoll just preach the gospel instead of trying to hide behind pseudo intellectualism which is very evident by the lack of cohesion in his delivery of this nonsense. He asked for people to stand up and state what is urgent...salvation is urgent. Preach it!
I would suggest for you to study a little bit of theology. It would profit you to read about God´s decree and secondary causes. In fact, as you say, Jesus death was prophesied and decreed before the world was created but at the same time, in order for that prophesy to be fulfilled, SOMEBODY ON EARTH HAD TO KILL HIM and have a reason to do so. The pharisees didn´t kill Jesus because "it was prophesied". They didn´t know that their murder was fulfilling prophesy.
Is Driscoll actually suggesting it's because Christ and his disciples used strong language?
My answer was yes and I gave my reasons. Your answer was no and your arguments were only personal attacks such as..."pseudo intellectualism, lack of cohesion, delivery of this nonsense". You are on your way to become a great Bible teacher!!
Mark - how about you follow Calvin's example and just kill those who oppose you? (and of course never repent of such sin) I think killing servatus would be a good example, you could justify killing Jehovah's Witnesses that come to your door with such an example.
John Calvin pushed for and used his political influence to get a man executed for RELIGIOUS REASONS - FACT. That is NOT denied by ANY historians, they might give him slack saying he was a ''man of his day'' (rather than a man of the word) or say it was political and civil but he DID particpate in murder.
Again, you need to get ALL THE FACTS straight here before shooting off your mouth and making A GROSS MISREPRESENTAION of what happened. That was not the 21st century and at that time, heresy was a crime. Calvin testified that Servetus was indeed a heretic.
NINE years later he was challenged as to the morality of the murder (people obviously had consciences FACT) and he would not repent. In some countries today it is illegal to be heretical. Is it moral to murder there? No Murder was murder then, the Holy Spirit is the same Holy Spirit, the word the same. Burning a heretic is MURDER - FACT The Bible has not changed. The fact that you defend him is defending Unrepentant SIN. There is NO excuse as there was no excuse for King David but he repented.
There is a difference between "murder" and executing punishment for law breaking. If that was their law at that time then so beit. It's not as though Calvin physically laid hands on him and killed him. God sanctions governments and raises up rulers. Perhaps it was God's own judgement executed by human agency. God killed false prophets in the past.
God giving authority does NOT justify their actions evil actions as right.
Calvin took personal responsibility for the death of servetus who was burned at the stake. He used civil authority to have it done. He did not say THEY did it, he said HE PURGED this heretic from the church. He was no better than Rome.
You did not answer my question. Is it MORAL or RIGHT to murder a heretic in another country that accepts such TODAY. eg. If a country legalised killing JW's, would it be right?
First, this earth, this universe, people, animals, plants, oceans etc belong to God. He can do whatever He wants with it. If you want to destroy everything you own no one can stop you nor is it illegal. Secondly, you're referring to the Amalekites. They attacked Israel as they wandered in the desert, but not all of Israel, they attacked and slaughtered the stragglers, as in the sick, old, handicapped, nursing mothers and children for no reason then ran. That's why God had them destroyed.
ANSWER MY QUESTIONS below about corrupt immoral laws today.
Legality does NOT make morality
You are using Old Testament theocratic examples under NT covenant world. You are defending a unrepentant vengeful murderer, that is FACT. He used a corrupt civil system to have it done.
If made legal would you kill Jehovah's Witnesses when they come to you door? What did JESUS say about our enemies? Please enlighten me
FACT: Legality does not make morality. Geneva at the time had become the new Rome
@leagueworld why? im not a calvinist im not arminian i just dont care. i love theology and i know i cant get my head around the way god does things ill leave it at that but because calvins sin or ignorance or responsibility in the death of servatus doesnt mean i get on here and pridefully oppose big named preachers who teach tulip YOU DONT HAVE TO BE ANYTHING BIG OR SMART CHRIST IS ALL AND IF YOUR IN HIM IT IS FINISHED PRAY FOR THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT AND HUMILITY IN WISDOM
Beware of the many false prophets who teach regularly on TBN. These wolves in sheeps clothing teach of a Third Movement classified as the Third Wave of Signs and Wonders that is comprised of Word Faith Doctrines that make God subservient to man due to the belief that God must operate under certain spiritual laws dictated by men. Please stay away from these heretical teaching, may the Lord rebuke these false prophets that practice these detestable doctrines!

You are teaching a false gospel and a false Jesus. You lie when you say we can't obey the commandements of Jesus Christ. He came to break the power of Satan SO THAT we would NOT have to sin. You are perverting the gospel of Christ and will fall under Paul's condemnation of those who preach a different gospel. Your kind also teach that we don't have to fear God, only revere Him. They take ONE scripture (1 John 4:18) which talks about the judgment and discard dozens of scripture about fearing God
kdanman was saying that the law was established by God to show sin to be utterly sinful. That any claim by us to be able to please God would be a lie and would lead to self-righteousness and prideful which is also sin. We fail to please God, and are in desperate need of a savior, and God provided one in Himself. kdanman didn't say anything perverted or extrabiblical.

Beware of the false teachers and preachers that teach the 'once saved always saved' false Gospel and false Jesus popularized by the murderer John Calvin. These same false teachers and preachers also teach and preach the heresy that Jesus will 'rapture' Christians BEFORE the start of the Great Tribulation Period, even though Jesus Himself said that there would be a great falling away and the man of perdition revealed FIRST. Don't be decieved. Do the first commandment, then the second one.
once saved always saved basically means that once God calls you and saves you, you will ultimately be with God. there is plenty of scriptural evidence. plenty. everywhere in the new testament.
I dont mean to sound rude but i jus want you to know where all this information that calvinists say is coming from. THE BIBLE!! calvinists arent interpreting the bible in some random way. they adhere strictly to the bible!
and also, God didnt give us the commandments so we can follow them and go to heaven. he gave us the commandments to show us that no matter what we do, we are sinners and we cant obey the commandments and we will always end up choosing to sin. He gave us the commandments to show us that we are sinners and that we cant be saved by obeying these rules but that we need a Savior to save us! this is strictly from the bible. i can give specific verses if you would like :)
I do know the difference between religion and Jesus. Most people (here in Canada anyways) who are not Christians use the 2 interchangeably, which is why I said it like I did.
Since however, it seems that you might be a Christian, I would have worded that differently if I had known. Peace!
He was talking about Rob Bell calling the Dahli Lama "his holiness". Sorry, there's NOTHING "holy" about that man. He's a wretched sinner just like everybody else.
i dont think it would be wise for a christian to ,out of respect, use titles such as those to address men. if the popes title was some thing like "almighty father" or "most high"
would you? or if they wanted you to bow down and worship one who set himself up above all that is called God, would you?
on the other hand..... he never said the bible didn't say. so if he wouldn't have understood what he meant. so it is general knowledge that people see him as a Tibetan holy man.
He can't comprehend the hyperbolic nature about Rob's statement. I guess. Rob NEVER interpreted the scriptures as saying that only Christian people deserve respect. He appealed to the general knowledge of people that we all deserve respect, especially others in their religions and now Plankeye here keeps squeeling about it.
Sooo refreshing. When we hear Ray Boltz came out of the closet, and is living "a normal gay life" - AND still being invited to churches, something like this is good to hear.
Who gives a rip what church fathers say? Go back to scripture, people. For any one thing a church father says, there's almost always another church father to contradict him.

I myself do not think i will ever consider masturbation in my marriage. God has clearly made a better way. However if another couple finds it pleasurable within marriage so be it. Mark is not perfect however i think he is right
gallegs7 1 year ago
@gallegs7 Driscoll did not say it's ok to masturbate within marriage while your in one room, and your wife is elsewhere. What your saying here could be taken as very misleading. The Bible talks about sex in Song of Songs (Solomon). Jesus does not talk about sex specifically. The closest thing I can think regarded as that is Jesus talking about lust. While I believe Pastor Driscoll speaks truth, and you should learn from him, nothing replaces your own time with Jesus in the scriptures. :-)
SAPierce2006 1 year ago
@gallegs7 It talks about bad examples of sexual perversions committed by various people. It talks about avoiding fornication. It talks about not witholding from one another within marriage commitment. The bible DOES address masturbation because fornication is the setting up of a sexual idol in one's heart which is what one does in masturbation. It's deliberately DECEIVING The physiology to make it think sexual intercourse is happening. I don't get my theology from perverts.
sounddoctorin 11 months ago 2
@sounddoctorin No you don't. You seem to get your doctrine from yourself. Please don't add to scripture.
waynefeller 9 months ago
@waynefeller I don't see any substance to your post. Only insult. Do you not know that the bible speaks against fornication? And that the word 'pornia' is the one pornograpy is based on? There is never a time to LIE to your physiology and tell it you have having sex when you aren't. Obviously. This is merely an extention of abiding IN THE TRUTH. Jesus is the TRUTH. So yeah I do get it from the Bible. on what basis do you claim otherwise?
sounddoctorin 8 months ago
@sounddoctorin You are extenuating. Where does the bible say this, not where do you cobble various scriptures together to verify your own belief. Show me in the bible.
waynefeller 8 months ago
@waynefeller IF you are so ignorant that you don't know the abundance of scriptures preaching against fornication then PICK UP THE BIBLE AND READ IT. Yeshua even says that if you LOOK on a woman lustfully you commit adultery in your heart (to the apparently married people listening, and/or the fact that you initially don't know if a woman you see is married.) Do you even know where such common scriptures are? Acts 15 then instructs to avoid fornication in the 'short list' of sins to avoid.
sounddoctorin 8 months ago
@sounddoctorin But, where does it speak against masturbation? I know what it says on lust. Where does it talk of masturbation? And why are you so rude?
waynefeller 8 months ago
@waynefeller why am I so rude? Dude above you blanket ACCUSE me of having no biblical backing instead of ASKING WHAT I base this one. THAT....is rude. Now what IS masturbation? It's when you DECEIVE your body to think you are having sex! THUS IT IS A TWO FOLD sin. 1) Functionally LYING to the parts of your body. Deceiving them. 2) Lusting in your heart towards something to arouse them.
sounddoctorin 8 months ago
@sounddoctorin You are right. I could have phrased my post more appropriately. For that I do apologize. As to your position, I still don't see the bible backing up what you say. Where does the bible say that masturbation is deceiving the body into thinking you are having sex? I see nothing to justify that statement. As for lust, yes lust is a sin, and even Mark Driscoll says that. That is why although masturbation itself isn't a sin, it is accompanied by the sin of lust.
waynefeller 8 months ago
@waynefeller wayne, we can read the heart or the legalistic take on anything. EG. the bible doesn't specifically say there is anything wrong with torturing someone. We have to assess things like 'do unto others...' and 'love your enemies..' even. The bible doesn't list every variation of a sin. EXAMINE THE MOTIVE THOUGH. There is a sin called dissipation. NASB uses it. Use blueletter bible and search for it's uses. NOTE how drunkness is a SUBcategory of dissipation. Look up the def.
sounddoctorin 8 months ago
@waynefeller continuing. If you know physics, you realize the word refers to expending energy that is wasted. Eg. you want to drop power supply voltage for something and instead of doing it the efficient way and making a switching regulator etc. , you simply install a big fat resistor and burn off the energy as heat. Do you see? This is precisely the category masturbation fits into. It does nothing to glorify God. It is purely for hedenistic pleasure. No fruit comes of it. Dissipation.
sounddoctorin 8 months ago
@gallegs7 driscoll said that... so you say that is ok? does the Bible say that?

@NobodySpecial85
You are a legalist. Repent.
grycer 1 year ago
@NobodySpecial85
Tradition over scripture is your route.
jimboo40 1 year ago
@NobodySpecial85
Sex with your spouse = good.
jimboo40 1 year ago
@NobodySpecial85 No it doesn't...... It goes with scripture. Have you ever read song of solomn?? I'm guessing no.. Also if you are going to throw some levitcal code in my face to support your argument, you must understand that it has to do with people doing that outside of marriage.. Go stone the next gay you see in the street. Oh wait.. that was abolished with the new covenant (no, don't go telling me that I said homosexualiy isn't a sin, because I never did)

Preach it!
blessingborn 2 years ago
I would suggest for you to study a little bit of theology. It would profit you to read about God´s decree and secondary causes. In fact, as you say, Jesus death was prophesied and decreed before the world was created but at the same time, in order for that prophesy to be fulfilled, SOMEBODY ON EARTH HAD TO KILL HIM and have a reason to do so. The pharisees didn´t kill Jesus because "it was prophesied". They didn´t know that their murder was fulfilling prophesy.
bull1504 2 years ago
Should I study the little bit you've read? Clearly you've missed my point and I see no point in flogging a dead horse.

I missed the point? Did I?...Your question was:
Is Driscoll actually suggesting it's because Christ and his disciples used strong language?
My answer was yes and I gave my reasons. Your answer was no and your arguments were only personal attacks such as..."pseudo intellectualism, lack of cohesion, delivery of this nonsense". You are on your way to become a great Bible teacher!!

Mark - how about you follow Calvin's example and just kill those who oppose you? (and of course never repent of such sin) I think killing servatus would be a good example, you could justify killing Jehovah's Witnesses that come to your door with such an example.
leagueworld 2 years ago
John Calvin didn't "kill" anyone. You should get your historical facts straight before making a lame comment like that.
gtrjunky 2 years ago
John Calvin pushed for and used his political influence to get a man executed for RELIGIOUS REASONS - FACT. That is NOT denied by ANY historians, they might give him slack saying he was a ''man of his day'' (rather than a man of the word) or say it was political and civil but he DID particpate in murder.
Whytheyconverted 2 years ago
Again, you need to get ALL THE FACTS straight here before shooting off your mouth and making A GROSS MISREPRESENTAION of what happened. That was not the 21st century and at that time, heresy was a crime. Calvin testified that Servetus was indeed a heretic.
gtrjunky 2 years ago
NINE years later he was challenged as to the morality of the murder (people obviously had consciences FACT) and he would not repent. In some countries today it is illegal to be heretical. Is it moral to murder there? No Murder was murder then, the Holy Spirit is the same Holy Spirit, the word the same. Burning a heretic is MURDER - FACT The Bible has not changed. The fact that you defend him is defending Unrepentant SIN. There is NO excuse as there was no excuse for King David but he repented.
lifecitycanberra 2 years ago
There is a difference between "murder" and executing punishment for law breaking. If that was their law at that time then so beit. It's not as though Calvin physically laid hands on him and killed him. God sanctions governments and raises up rulers. Perhaps it was God's own judgement executed by human agency. God killed false prophets in the past.
gtrjunky 2 years ago
God giving authority does NOT justify their actions evil actions as right.
Calvin took personal responsibility for the death of servetus who was burned at the stake. He used civil authority to have it done. He did not say THEY did it, he said HE PURGED this heretic from the church. He was no better than Rome.
You did not answer my question. Is it MORAL or RIGHT to murder a heretic in another country that accepts such TODAY. eg. If a country legalised killing JW's, would it be right?
lifecitycanberra 2 years ago
BTW - The death sentence for Heresy DID NOT exist in Geneva anyway.
Do you accept death sentence of Christians in Saudi Arabia as right? That is their law.
How about Abortion? That is Legal (can Christians participate in that?)
In some countries I can legally beat my wife.
Does legality equal morality? Answer that, a simple Yes or No will do.
leagueworld 2 years ago
You tell me? Is it "moral or right" for God to command the death of an entire race of people? (1 Sam.15)
gtrjunky 2 years ago
Under OT, yep, It was a theocratic system where the civil and religious were directly under covenant.
ANSWER MY QUESTIONS?
What did JESUS say about our enemies? TURN THE OTHER CHEEK. I am guessing you interpret that to mean turn theirs.
leagueworld 2 years ago
First, this earth, this universe, people, animals, plants, oceans etc belong to God. He can do whatever He wants with it. If you want to destroy everything you own no one can stop you nor is it illegal. Secondly, you're referring to the Amalekites. They attacked Israel as they wandered in the desert, but not all of Israel, they attacked and slaughtered the stragglers, as in the sick, old, handicapped, nursing mothers and children for no reason then ran. That's why God had them destroyed.
StCausesARuckus 1 year ago
so under that logic Nazis and slavery are perfectly ok?
well so be it?If that was their law at that time then so be it.

Geneva at the time had become the new Rome

so was adultery.

777denny 2 years ago
once saved always saved basically means that once God calls you and saves you, you will ultimately be with God. there is plenty of scriptural evidence. plenty. everywhere in the new testament.
I dont mean to sound rude but i jus want you to know where all this information that calvinists say is coming from. THE BIBLE!! calvinists arent interpreting the bible in some random way. they adhere strictly to the bible!
kdanman00 2 years ago 2
and also, God didnt give us the commandments so we can follow them and go to heaven. he gave us the commandments to show us that no matter what we do, we are sinners and we cant obey the commandments and we will always end up choosing to sin. He gave us the commandments to show us that we are sinners and that we cant be saved by obeying these rules but that we need a Savior to save us! this is strictly from the bible. i can give specific verses if you would like :)

care to explain?
king David
woman caught in the act in John (7)?

He can't comprehend the hyperbolic nature about Rob's statement. I guess. Rob NEVER interpreted the scriptures as saying that only Christian people deserve respect.
