In case you didn't notice there were still other tanks that had not yet caught fire when the 1st two went up. They still had a responsibility to attempt to control the fire and prevent it from reaching those other tanks. When the horns were blown to stop and leave, the fire had spread through out the entire complex.

They're not God. They didn't know that the tank was going to fly off, obiously, or they wouldn't have been there. They evacuated the scene promptly when this happened. Tank battery fires are definitely more dangerous that most fires, and they are aware of this. However, a firefighters duty is to protect the public, disregarding the danger that the task holds.
