Which Spike knew he was going to die but he wasn't going there to die. If I recall the two stars they show during the credits that lose their light is both stars of Vicious and Spike and they represent their life force. When they both die so will the light in those stars. So yes Spike is most likely dead.

The indian even tells Jet, Spikes star is fading. He predicted the same thing with Gren i believe. When i saw the end I didn't cry, but smile, because i don't think spike is dead. The creators never specified if he had lived or died, so the fans are free to believe what they want.

The scene in which Spike and Faye get real before he leaves in his fighter craft (Swordfish) implies that Spike will die. Ed and Ein have been gone by this time, so it feels right that Spike departs from life on the Bebop too.
Spike should have just killed himself instead of getting involved in the gunfighting in which Shin is shot to death saving him. The story was kind of over when Julia died because her death confirms that there is no love for Spike to look forward to. In going to kill Vicious he seems prepared for death and I guess he does committ suicide with his choice to enter the battle that he does alone.
actually, he does die. the old guy with the sand said that when you are born, you get a guardian star, but when you die, that star goes out. at the end of this video, spike dies and that star at the VERY end of the video goes out. sorry to ruin it for you, but yes, he dies.

Once Julia was gone, there was nothing left. He already died once, so death isn't tragic at all. His LIFE is tragic, not his death. Why live when you have nothing left? This is why Spike is such an interesting character because he's so aloof, he's willing to face death every day.
@ThirdWaveCrave Actually it could be more of a matter of opinion. Pretty sure the theme of the show is about coming to terms with the past. I mean they all confront their pasts at some point and their job is to hunt people down who have done bad in their pasts. I'm pretty sure Spike felt some affection towards Faye, Jet, Edward and Ein but he had to come to terms with his past once they all left and he had to take down Vicious.
this ending is gay. the 1 i saw has spike getting thrown out a window by vicious but not before he slipped a live grenade in viscious's trench coat, then waiting for it to explode as he falls to his pressumed death. way better ending look it up

The sad thing isn't Spike dying, it's the manner of how the group split up. Not knowing what comes next for the rest of characters is 10x sadder than Spike's death.

I agree. This ending was probably more evocative/depressing than most American movies I've watched. It's too bad it ended so quickly, I would've liked to see more of Spike and the crew.
