I can understand Carlos Santana's quote of sitting in front of these drums and, I believe he said, soaking up the rhythm. They are part of the very earth we stand on.
"Drums of Passion" was first released on 33 and a third rpm vinyl in 1959. It has been in print ever since in some form of recorded media. 1989 was when it was re-released on CD.
this disc is from the World series of recordings by Mickey Hart. there are many other recordings that will change your life as well. it is a true treasure. collect them all and turn it up loud!!!
Are you the same Babatunde I met over 30 years ago playing drums and other rythym (sp) items witn a reggae band in some club in Berkeley? I think quite q few years later you did rythym;p/drums for a group my ex-husband put together, Tommy Hall Quintet, and a bit later with a Muslim name (InShaAllah, I pray he seriously follows the teachings of Muhhamed (pbuh) and the Holy Quran with the words of Allah, as given to the faithful believers through the teachings of Muhhamed (pbuh), Khahil Shaheed?
@jakrinda This is who I learned djembe playing from--through videos & such, not live f2f. He's an awesome drummer, though I think he's dead now, am grateful so much digital content exists to remember him by, learn from & inspire us long after he's gone. Isn't his playing incredible??? :-)
This music conjures up thoughts of the primordial ooze that all of life was created from. The essence of all living beings in one glorious rhythm. Gives me the warm fuzzies all over and at the same time feelings of a vulnerable soul in the vastness of the universe.
Or maybe i ate to many shrooms in my misspent youth.
OMG, I finally found this song. I actually had to dance to this when I was young for some sort of special event back in New Orleans... I can't believe I found it after all these years.

"African music long before anyone devised the worldbeat marketing strategy."
Are you sure ? Serge Gainsbourg did it in 1964 with "Marabout" "New York USA" and "Joanna".
