  • RIP Opie! Thank you for caring for these beautiful creatures!

  • I can't believe he was left like that, so glad to see he was given a good life :)

  • Thank you Farm Sanctuary! When I get a job, I want to donate! Having been a veggie for 5 years, I definitely cringe when I smell meat. However, if some people want to do it, I won't be rude about their wishes. I just want the pitiful factory farm animals to be treated like living things if they HAVE to be eaten. That means getting rid of "factory" farms altogether and letting the animals roam free.

  • opie we will figh till the end to end slaughter please ask god to help us!!

  • I can't wait to take my family, my will be 4 yr. old next year son and husband, to the Watkins Glen Farm Sanctuary. I haven't eaten meat in 19 yrs. and will never again, thanks to educating myself about the atrocities to farm animals. We need to educate the young people, like my little boy, and change will happen. We'll be seeing you guys next May (2011)! Can't wait!

  • I would love to visit you guys and help out a bit. I am quite strong and have no problem doing hard work.

  • @blkcpdconure We would love to have you! You can read about our monthly volunteer work parties on our website under "Get Involved" then "Jobs/Internships".

  • "Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me" thank you...Opie

  • Big beautiful bull

  • im sorry he died. ='( he was an amazing opie!

  • You know there's a really beautiful song by Sufjan Stevens called "Opie's Funeral Song". It's about a childhood friend of Sufjan's who was killed in a car crash. It might be fitting for this video.

  • What we need is to get younger kids to visit places like these, so they can actually meet cows and pigs and see what kind, gentle creatures they are. Eventually, the idea of eating a cow or pig may seem as terrifying as eating a dog or cat to them. Thanks for all you do for animals!

  • My God! where have all you people been, I have lived in America for 58 yrs now and was raised in west Tex. I have never met anyone that had this much insight, love, compassion for earths creatures till just a few yrs. ago. I knew somthing was wrong here but could not say exactly what?

I am so glad to know that people like you are out there:) I am trying to one of you:) to change, to stop accepting that these wonderful creatures are nothing but pounds market product:( Thank you again:)

  • You guys are so amazing is there anyway I could donate!

  • There are many ways you can help. Please visit our website and click "Get Involved" at the top.

    Thanks for your support!

  • Cows can live to the age of 25 years old. But seeing Opies rough start, it's pretty cool that he lived this long!

  • This is just TOO cute! My eyes feel watery :-( I have a cow that is 17.... I guess that's old for a cow....:-( she doesn't go out of her barn much :-(

  • It was an awful case, but luckily Opie got really good home and care at Farm Sanctuary!

  • I don't know Opie but he sounds like a true pal. What is weird is I was out and about today and saw some cows and said I want one :). R.I.P. Opie :)

  • We'll miss ya opie. Live on!

  • damn, he lived long O.O 18 years? Wow...

  • The oldest known cow ever recorded was a Dremon Cow named 'Big Bertha' who died 3 months just before her 49th birthday on New Years Eve, 1993 and, she also holds the record for being mother to the most 39 calves,

  • Bless your heart Opie - watch over your friends - xxx

  • Goodbye Opie, you will be missed. Let us be thankful that this steer continued to live the rest of his life in peace and happiness at farm sanctuary. Learning about all of this is the reason why I no longer eat that much hamburger meat as I used to. Farm animals have feelings just like house pets. He may be gone, but his spirit will always be in those who love him enough to save him.

  • My condolences to those left behind, and my thanks to Opie for his kind and endearing message of peace. I never met Opie but had a great visit with Hugo at the CA Farm Sanctuary; if Opie was as inspiring a character as Hugo then I know he must have been an amazing friend to all who knew him. Opie, your legacy lives on and your message continues to inspire.

  • How sad... what a beautiful boy. I am sorry I hadn't made it out there before to have met him. The founder of Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary died this past winter... Janice the pot bellied pig.

    Everything happens for a reason.

Thank you for all you do for the animals.

  • I am so grateful I had a chance to see and play with Opie again when I visited the Farm Sanctuary last summer for the annual Hoedown. He was the very definition of love and forgiveness. I adored him from the first moment I met him. Rest in peace, my sweet, gentle friend. Your kind spirit will always be with me. Because of you and the other bulls and cows I've come to love, I vowed never go near beef, leather or dairy again. You will bask in God's loving light forever. You'll be missed so much.

  • I had the great honor of working at FS and introducing the public to Opie. The greater honor however was the friendship Opie gave to me. I'll always love you Opie...just as everyone will.

  • I remember Opie and Hamilton at Farm Sanctuary. I learned so much from knowing them and giving them TLC. Opie was love itself. Thank you for giving him a very good life. He was one of your Ambassadors and he taught so many that steers are not stupid and each "farmed animal" has an individual personality like any dog or cat. Opie gave a gift to anyone who met him and that was love. He will be missed. Thank you, Opie! and thank you, Farm Sanctuary.

  • I saw Opie in the fall and he was as sweet and funny as ever. I'll miss him. He was a real inspiration to us all. RIP, sweet friend.

  • My friend Tracey and I both had the pleasure of meeting Opie and are deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Thank you for taking care of him for so long....and for all of the other great work you do. It's amazing that humans think "proper" behavior should be modeled after themselves; Opie was an inspiration - his capacity to forgive and to love is unsurpassable.

  • My daughter and I visited the Farm Sanctuary a couple years ago and were delighted to meet all the sweet cows there. We've fallen off the vegan path recently and Opie has inspired us to move in that direction again. We ordered vegetarian tonight in honor of Opie!

  • I was fortunate to have met this incredible Being. He was so big, yet so very gentle. I am deeply saddend that I will not get a chance to see him again. I will miss you sweet Opie.

  • I'm sorry to hear about Opie. :( His spirit will be with you...always. You even have a nice video to prove it.

  • i wish i got a chance to meet Opie. what a wonderful and beautiful symbol for farm sanctuary he was, and how fortunate were those who got to meet him. i never did and miss him still.....thank you for all you do farm sanctuary, you are an inspiration to all who love animals.

    peace~

  • Reading Opie's story makes me so glad I am vegan. I refuse to contribute to the suffering of beautiful creatures like him.

  • I am glad that Opie was saved by Farm Sanctuary & lived a nice life. I am sure that Opie made many people vegans by meeting him and showing people that food animals are every bit as compassionate and loving as comapnion animals.

  • Thank you FARM Sanctuary and thank you Opie. You had a life well lived. May you rest in peace...

  • So sad :'(

But I feel so happy to know that Opie lived a long, happy and healthy life!

You are such an inspiration... please never give up!

I wish we had Farm Sanctuary here in Guatemala!

  • Aww so sad he passed away.

God bless you for giving this cow the happy, healthy life he deserved!
