Last year my school did this play. A girl played Prospero or 'Prospera' and the movie probably changed the gender for the same reason we did, because the woman was a better actress.

I love Taymor! even though her films are far from perfect she is not afraid of experimentation, her films are always interesting and her passion is clear in all of her films! I'd much rather watch an interesting, innovative film that has some negative aspects than a boring conventional film that doesn't do anything 'wrong'

Absolutely loved it and I think it is a shame people aren't accepting this version but then again I haven't seen the film yet so I'll have to give it a go soon.

@TheBshap Even my professor who teaches Shakespeare liked it, even for all it's artsy glory. Despite what people say I do still want to see this. It looks like it is pretty well adapted, even if they do change the gender of Prospero to Prospera (but I'm not one of those traditionalist, heck I even like Helen Mirren and think she looks like she did a good job in this movie).
