  • Amiga game bass - 4:08 :)

  • When I think of Emulator II - it's one of the best sounding synthesizers that I have ever heard

  • I cant understand what makes a man, hates another man, help me understand !

  • Awesome, I read The Pet Shop Boys recorded West End Girls with this mahine alone. I wish I could get hold of one to compliment my DX7 MK2.

  • 0:42

    Sadeness - Enigma

  • Could you tell me the name of the sample used at 6:20? I've been hunting high and low for those OMI CD's but no luck :(

  • Hi, it's called Pro Strings, I think it's on OMI 3. If you have a Rev 1 EII get yourself an old Mac & Sound Designer connection as you can get all the library sounds in that format.

  • @JMPSynth Thanks for the reply, I have an Emu Emax SE and I'm currently in the process of setting up a Mac PowerBook to work alongside it with Sound Designer. Just need good samples. :)

  • EMXP program will convert between EII and Emax. I can't distribute the factory libraries but I've got hundreds of custom EII sounds that you can hear in my other YT demo's ;)

  • @JMPSynth I've been having problems getting my EMAX SE to communicate with my PowerBook, do you know if you have to set the EMAX into a certain mode for it to work over RS422?

  • Sorry, I've no experience of using SD with an Emax, only the EII.

  • Whoa, this is where the 80s had their sounds coming from!

Is there an emulator "emulator" somewhere?

  • terminator...

  • dep mode fan...

  • 2:55 Somebody - Depeche Mode

  • I can clearly tell that you're a big Depeche Mode fan

  • Mines over at Forat in Los Angeles getting the power supply issue fixed and a basic maintence/cleaning.Cant wait to get it back home. While it has lots of features,im still only good with the basics,as i didnt get to use it long before the power suppy conked out,but fortunatly i have the notebook it came with! I have the Emulator 2 with the HD which im told is the preffered version, but id like the double disc bays..is it possible to hook up a outboard 3" disc drive?

  • Anyone know where I can get these sample libraries in Kontakt format? Or a akai ect then I can convert to Kontakt. I need them for a project, let me know thanks

  • Omg! Some VERY amazing sounds there! I gotta buy one...

  • ok, i'm desperate! i've been searching for a sound for years! here it is: /watch?v=a7FVlB-3b80 right there at 0:41 of the video! it's the thing that sounds like a guitar or a bass guitar going "dao, dadao, dao!" PLEASE help me! Is it from a certain synth? a certain sampler? I've heard it a lot in music from the 80's!

  • Your link doesn't work.

  • @skrikon

that what sounds like a bass or a guitar IS a bass and a guitar.

  • My dream is to own one of these one day. Does anyone know what you would pay for it nowadays? ...That's IF you can find one ofcourse. :P

  • £500 to £1,500 depending on version, condition and library I reckon.

  • @JMPSynth Jesus!! wonder wonder what they cost back when the boys were using them. Btw you did a great job of demonstrating the sounds,DM sounds like classical music when you strip it down.

  • Can you tell me what the name of the first sound is playing and where can i find it....

  • It's mentioned above. Expensive Synth or Liquid Stack (as it displays on the EII). Part of the OMI library collection (No. 2 I think).

  • @roblove2007 The first sound on the video is called "Liquid Stick" - i remember it from when i had an Emulator II - a really great instrument especially as it had a very low bit rate by today's standards. I sampled it into an Akai - but it never sounded as good - !

  • somone how knows how to download thees samples in wav or somthing?

  • Stevie NIcks probably stole it for the intro part of "Rooms on Fire"...

  • People are People so...!

  • 6:30 great pads

  • verry 80s I love it

  • Probably THE first sampler that took advantage of long (well - long for the time - 17.4 seconds) sampling times. A very atmospheric machine and the libraries that sprung up because of it really had some of the world's best samples - much better than the Fairlight's library of very short sounds. I still get chills when playing "Loon Garden" or the ankglung presets on mine - thankfully mine (a II+HD) has yet to fail me other than a sticky 0 button on the keypad.

  • Hello, very nice demo track. i Love it. I also using the EMU 2 with an big library but i dont have the sound you played the begining of "people are people ". What sound is it, it sounds great ??

  • Thanks. It's called Liquid Stack or Expensive Synth, part of the OMI library (OMI 2 I think, would need to check).

  • @JMPSynth

I´ve heard about the OMI libary. Must be great. But where can i find it ( or buy ) ???

  • I took two of these on tour with Go West. Great machines, but slow to load and one actually blew up. They have notoriously crap power supplies.

  • Yeah, the UK ones were well known to have cheap PSU's originally. The first thing most people replace/overhaul when they get one of these.

  • @JMPSynth Mine apparently laid an egg..powers up then all the lights start blinking and a low buzz...im assuming thats what it is

  • I will die for getting one of these beasts...

  • Matthew Broderick used that synthesizer too make coughing and vomiting sounds on the phone in the 1986 movie "Ferris Buller's Day Off".

  • vsti??? have???

  • very good and analog instrument! great and fat sound!

  • awesome

I've still got an Emax II and a huge bank of sounds, I still use it a lot.

can't beat the old machines in my opinion.

nowadays a synth seems to mean a laptop and a cd.

far too many lifeless virtual synths around these days.

(although i did pick up Razor from NI and it is awesome.)

  • Excellent! Nice job. This thing sounds amazing. There was a time when I would have traded my grandmother in for such an instrument.

  • people are people, black celebration and somebody... nice demo :)

  • Does anyone know if version 2, or 3 is better? Version 3 seems to be a lot cheaper and has certain advantages...

  • Great job on the video btw. Far better than a lot of others.

  • Playstation sound? 4:25 -4:30 :D

  • Excelent demo. What's the sound for the terminator theme at 6:20? Its amazing.

  • Hi, it's from OMI CD 1 > Pro Strings > P01 PRPT String.

  • @JMPSynth Hellay JMP!!! Thanks for replying my email. Couldnt do anything with the SoundFound in my email. Need a macintosh to process this one. BUT, look, I was able to find the same patch, or, almost the same patch in the YAMAHA TX16W sampler. Now I can play the Brad Fiedel's Terminator theme in my studio. Let me know if you need this sound-font.

  • TABGERINE DREAM AT 5 14

  • Loool :) totally people are people ... were DM using this?

    i just know vangelis

  • @FAndreee Yes indeed.

  • Wish i had one : ( id take it to work , go into the office and play annoying industrial metal drum breaks , and tell them i need a new van.

  • Whats the sound at 2:26 please, Are these pre set or recorded???

  • It's a preset of the Mister E library soundbank referred to above, another preset of this bank is heard at 2.12.

  • For those who thinks that Emu should re-make the Emulator II, raise their hand!

  • I want one :`(

  • 3:17 it's jonny greenwood's sound? like in exit music?

  • Vangelis used this synth a lot for his electronic orchestral work. So, I wonder if you can reveal his/the famous percussion sounds (timpani, crash cymbals, piatti) from it. I am curious!

  • Thanks for this video!

  • hey man what is the sound called from 0:43 -- 0:59

  • That's the quite famous Shakuhachi.... Enigma (Sadeness), Peter Gabriel (Sledgehammer) etc.

  • @JMPSynth ..... And Eurythmics 'Conditioned Soul' from album 'Be Yourself Tonight'

I love that sample, I only got it in 1992, It was on the Casio FZ library, I was so chuffed, be it some decade later!

  • @JMPSynth

Hi, This Type of Shakuhachi, can i get it in Korg or Roland Synths? Please Help Me Find it, I not sure but i can´t get the Emu Emulator II, or it still on sale? Thanks!

  • 4:23-4:38 This should fit for the music for a dream Danish television network channel!

  • No, make that for a dream Canadian television network channel.

  • John what is this a karpet sound on 2:12? This is an amazing tune.

    I wish a comfortable RSS422---to---USB Devise :-///

    Regards,

    Michael

  • It's called 'Mister E' (I think) and has been used on several 80's tracks including 'Dreams' by Ultravox (as played in the demo).

  • @JMPSynth on Tangerine Dream Canyon Dreams there is one track with that sound

  • Got a few sounds that converted for Kontakt but the magic disappears. (even though they were recorded from the analogue outs)

  • Couldn't afford Emu at the time, so I bought the first Mirage. Ha-ha. WHERE does one find the sounds from your demo or the original factory sounds for the EII or EIII in say, Kontakt format? I've searched everywhere. Took me close to two years to convert all my Mirage stuff to Kontakt, but worth the time as those are now some of my coolest sounds. Go figure. I REALLY now want to get the Emu sounds too.

  • There's a guy on Ebay US who has created some in Kontakt from his oriignal disks.

  • any chances someone sample the PRTP STRINGS, the last trimbre, the terminator sound, into ni kontakt? would be sooo great this one!!

  • the TERMINATOR II timbre is available on the CULT SAMPLER > SYNCLAVIER > VOCAL STRING MOD ENV

  • I love those analogue filters! I have an Emulator 4 keyboard but it just isn't the same.

  • Sadeness Enigma sounds

  • 0:44 - I herd you liek ninjaz xD

Beautiful sounds and incredible machine... is still a rarity for appeal and innovation... and unfortunately for its price too...

  • At 4:41 it sounds so much like when Private Pyle loses it in the bathroom on Full Metal Jacket!! Excellent keyboard...i wanted one so bad after watching Ferris Bueller!!!

  • Heh, yes it does..! Hadn't noticed that before, great scene.

  • 2.22 - patlabor

  • Génail! que de souvenirs et merci pour avoir partagé. Great job

  • around 0:33 isn't that people are people by depeche mode?

  • Aye, just threw that in for interest :) They're not library sounds, as stated in my demo info.

  • yap P are P DM :)

  • Brilliant!

Are there any plugins for Cubase 5 with some of these emulator II sounds?

  • Not that I'm aware of I'm afraid.

  • @JMPSynth

I'va just found a plugin called 'Cult Sample' it has 2000 samples from '70 en 80's synths. I'm very curious!

  • Interesting, let us know if any good.

  • @JMPSynth

    I will ^^

But the rar. files have a password, I need to find first. :(

Maybe I'll just buy the package online, I'll let it know when I have it.

  • I was wondering if the Emax can read the emulator 2 samples, I'm looking for an EII at the moment but there seems to be more emax's about. I the emax a viable option or am I missing the point as the EII seems to sound superb. Sorry for the Q's

  • Np. You can convert EII banks into Emax format using EMXP program. The early Emax's (grey chassis colour) had analogue filters so would likely sound most like the EII.

  • @JMPSynth

Many Thanks, that's great. I will keep an eye out for a good EMUII first though. I have been using Kontakt, but most of these VST samplers are just playback only, no actual sampling. Seems there is nothing quite like a good hardware sampler with nice analogue filters.

  • The 'flute' reverbed sound at 2:14 is just beyond superb

  • @waheex

    Makes me think of Vangelis!

  • LOOOOVE that drum beat around 30 seconds into it :)

  • Great sounds. I've got an E2 and would love to know which libraries you were demo'ing...

  • There's a mix from the EMU, Burmer and OMI libraries. There's an EII forum with some of the sounds listed but can't post links here.

  • your E 2 looks so brand new.... mine looks like a old horse...lol

  • Ah no, these are google images... ! :)

  • What an amazing keyboard. The sounds you can coax out of this thing are absolutely amazing. Warm, lush and crisp. 'Sledgehammer' at 1:00!!

Wish I had one! *Oh well, time for me to go cue Ferris playing his Emulator :)

  • is there any vst or something that has shakuhachi sound????

  • AHhhh I miss my E II...

  • fantastic sound of original Depeche Mode! very compliments!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey :)

Whats the song at 5:33 ?

  • No song, just a tune I came up with to demonstrate the sound.

  • @JMPSynth

    Ok :)

  • @SierraaSynth Nearly the chord progression from Duran's "Save A Prayer".

  • PUUUUUUUURE M A G I C !!!!!!!!!

Thank you for letting me know where all the sounds I love come from :-)

    Very grateful!!!

    Love!

  • Is this an 8-bit or 16-bit sampler? I would like to think it's 16-bit.

  • 8 bit. Part of what gives the EII its distinct sound I think.

  • @JMPSynth actually the samples are 8-bit, the DA converters are 12-bit Delta-Sigma with oversampling, that's why it sounds so astonishingly good

  • @douro20

Yes 8 bit.....Not to mention the analog filters!

  • @douro20 it's 12 bit…

  • beautiful sounds there ! the first thing you play sounds like the beginning of "rooms on fire" by stevie nicks.

  • Beautiful... I have an E4K and an EMAX II HD. I like the sounds very much. Reminds me the day before I started using Apple and Kore, Native Instruments and so on.

    Nice pictures also.

  • Most are non working when sold and probably around £300-£500 in the UK. A fully working model more like £700-£800 depending on version and whether there is a library with it etc.

  • The piano sounds really fake... Choir sounds are very powerful.

  • how was sampling done on this beautiful monster?

  • 1/4" jack audio input from any source, a mic. etc. I use WAV sounds edited within a PC, played directly into this input.

  • Can you tell me the name of the piano preset? The one that sounds exactly the same as somebody.

  • Pretty sure it was just 'Grand Piano' from the EMU library.

  • @JMPSynth Yes, you're right. I recently bought an Emax 1 and I have the Grand piano bank. Wow, instant somebody.

  • classic synth - all the Emu samplers/synths where pretty sweet (I am biased *looks over at the E5000 ultra*). Can't recall was the interface on the back a SCSI port, parallel or a D type.... had some wonderful filters on it (something they never really lost even on the later models).

  • I see you broke out your Fairlight and PPG Wave disks at 4:24 the floating ork? :)

  • What do mean it doesn't include the drums from People are People

Between 0:23-0:42 you can clearly hear them

  • It means the 'library' doesn't include the PAP drum sounds. The header of the youtube video is Emu Emulator II Sound 'Library' Demo.

  • @JMPSynth But the question was reasonable. If they are not included in the Library why are they here? And where do they come from?

  • Because when I recorded this demo I put them in there and then decided to refer to it as a library demo later on (as all the sounds but that one are library sounds...!) If you read earlier comments, you'll see these are sampled from another youtube demo.

  • @Sparksfuckingryder those drums are sickk at 0:36

  • @djFrog11 I Know Aren't they

  • I think these are all the sounds used on Dragonball Z.

  • Hello!

Is it possible to asseble a cd drive to Emulator II as pictured at 1:27?

Or what is the case with this sound cd library? I have an Emulator II but I mostly have crappy sound discs. I would be really glad to have that sound library!

  • The CD drive shown was a specific OMI optical CD drive for the EII in the 1980's and is extremely hard to find now, particularly still working. No other CD drives work directly with the EII. You can still buy the Northstar library on 5.25" disks directly via the internet.

  • There's an instrument that comes in at about 2:31, and it's been used on a Peter Gabriel track. If anyone knows what the track is I would love to know! Many Thanks :)

  • Hi, please ,coudl you write me the cords (for the piano) for the People are People melody (I can´t figure out the very first ivories) and for the Black Celebration? Thx a lot!, Jan*

  • i love how they just put "Wheels" above the mod and pitch wheels at 2:42 . love this machine. great demo btw

  • Why doesn't new stuff sound this good

  • love DM

  • I see CD-Roms for sale with titles like this:

eii 8bit sample library volume 3 iso this is the famous eii library volume 3 iso used by dave stuart eurythmics paul wellar style council depeche mode sir paul mccartney

claiming one can load them in Kontakt, EmulatorX3 or Proteus or any soft sampler, and getting the sounds you brilliantly showcased here. I hope vst's can capture most of this, because these ARE THE BEST SOUNDS I've ever heard :-) Thank you for keeping these sounds alive!!

  • @muzicul

The Proteus is very well known for its orchestral sounds- it was used quite a lot in soap opera productions.

  • @douro20 Ahhh....yes....and the old sounds on those old soap operas are always so wonderful....now I know why :-)

  • people are people sounds came from a gareth jones session by neubauten and

dm used the sounds from that session , the sounds were done on a synclavier

    no?

  • depeche mode people are people its wierd before the drums came on i thought the sounds were very depeche mode

  • I NEED TO HAVE ONE!!!!!!!!

  • GOOOD§

  • O.22- O.41 are Depeche Mode :-)

  • what is that very first sound?

i have a Emulator 2+HD and like to get that disk!

  • It's called 'Expensive Synth' as a soundbank, 'Liquid Stack' as a sample patch. Always happy to consider trades :)

  • @JMPSynth well, mine still uses the great big floppys..i have a modern floppy drive to install, but im not sure how or where id get the discs so i never bothered!

  • Same here (both of mine are 5.25" drives). You can still buy blank disks on Ebay, just make sure they state DS DD. There's more of the 3.5" DS DD disks available if you fit your new drive.

  • Is it possible to get these Sound Library for an Vst Synthesizer?

  • Nope.

  • Lol...well..thanks, I think :(

  • Just bought one nice sampler of the emulator called "best service cult sampler"

amazing samples of the emu , emax3 and fairlight cmi ii

found one pad very similar to the terminator theme, in the synclavier synth

  • This is THE synth for me, well this and an ARP Odyssey. Looking all over for them at a good price but can never find one :( Thanks for these, I have watched your videos thousands of times.

  • You're welcome. There's a couple of EII's for sale on Ebay UK at the moment.

  • @1981analog . I have a Emulator 1 & 2 plus a white faced ARP Odyssey.... They're not for sale but I'd thought I'd mention it :-)

  • Ok... the question is... who created all those sounds? who created the entire EII library?

    That person was THE genious!

  • found is forums

the terminator theme is called OMI 1 > Pro Strings > P01 PRPT String

  • cant get enough of those timbres. amazing. hello to yall emu lovers. still looking for a EMU software version (proteus is giving me had time...)(

  • This demo is so awesome. All I have is an Oberheim DPX-1 and an E-Mu Emax.....would love that Terminator patch. It's just perfect! Props, man.

  • The DPX-1 will read 5.25" EII floppies but sorry, can't remember which patch that was I used at the end...

  • DANG THATS TIGHT!!

  • hahah Legend sound track around the 5 min mark- very cool

  • oh my god this pads at the end of the video, used on terminator movie, give me goosebumps all over. still looking for this patch for my studio works

  • I'd send it to you but can't remember which soundbank patch this is. Sorry !

  • if you remember PM me - I'm interested in this library very much thanks.

  • A classic machine. Was brought up listening to this thing. Love it.

  • wow. . i think the TearGarden used this on last man to fly. . . . nice

  • every single sound of this machine gives me goosebumps ...

i need to get me one......

  • Can this library be used as a VSTi with Kontakt or something ?

  • Nope, not that I'm aware.

  • Finally the SHAKUHACHI - Enigma preset arrived here at the studio.

But still looking for the TERMINATOR 2 sample.

    big tks for all, JMP!

  • It's just a pad sample demonstrated by the theme, not the same as the original.

  • I am more than happy. i have some importants (to me) samples of the emuII here, the shakuhachi for instance. many thanks jmp for all the great communications.
