  • Just saw him in Limerick tonight....

    He's still got it!

  • magic

  • Do you hear the dublin accent coming out in this version. LAter versions revert to his northern vernacular...

  • @reillci

No, I don't hear any Dub in this, but he doesn't have the clever phrasing that he was later to use in more recent recordings of this song!

I think he was still "learning" the song here! (as Gaughan says, "you don't know a song until you've sung it a few hundred times-it still surprises you"!)

  • No other version comes any where near Bradys, this is the way god would have it played it, and he,s irish too, any one who begs to differ, shall be shot at ten paces with a ball of their own shite.

  • Damn Masterpiece, it is.

  • nobody sing this song like paul brady the open g tune and his tone style best version ever my opinion

  • "dylan is not good enough to tune his guitar" - aftermath. thought that comment was very funny and there's a lot of truth in it. when dylan met brday in new yoork his first question was "what's the guitar tuning on arthur mcbride man?" no kiddin'. brady told that story in an interview.

    macmór

  • @technischesKO Disagree my good man with the tuning. Ole Dylan might not have know the tuning for Arthur Mcbride but In his early days Bob used alot of altered tunings, mostly for old blues and the like. Lol sorry just defending his honor!

  • classic, nobody can sing this song like Paul Brady

  • yeah..my first time hearing of Paul Brady, I learned this song from the Dylan version, this guy is really refreshing..

  • i love it pure irish

  • Absolute genius

  • wow, he has been playing that for SO long. i feel better now, as i have only been trying to learn his version for a couple months. i think i will get there, but it will be a long time before i can sing it like him with those beautiful vocal trills at the end of many lines.

  • I'm trying to learn to sing it and its difficult. God help playing it. First time I heard this was about 5 years ago in The Olympia in Dublin. Paul on his own and alot of Instruments. If u get the chance see him live. He plays this song and its like he's playing two gituare's at once

  • fantastic. I'm trying to learn the '77 version for new year.. mmm gratifying to see him tweak the D string, I could hear one of them was out a few bars before.. he is human.

  • he was struggling towards the end there , in his later performances of the song, he was epic ... you can tell he worked hard on it !! great song sung by a great ballider

  • A real treasure .....what ever year !!

  • Great song. love paul ! Dylan is the king. he has a voice that has been disected ripped apart by his own lifestyle[ like myself] however his voice suits this tune .

  • Dylan cannot play or sing this tune. He is neither a great singer or guitar player. He plays this really sloppy. Brady is a legend and Dylan is not good enough to tune his guitar, he is a song writer

  • chill out guy!!! Dylans voice as i said before has been effected by his lifestyle. however he must be doing something right He had a no1 album last year both in the us and uk-- not bad for a 68 year old. Ill continue with my obseesion with all things Bob and you continue to listen to what ever turns you on and we,ll all live happily ever after. By the way, i note you like Tom Waits-- Love him--- saw him 3 nights in 2008 in Dublin phenominal shows. 2nd best vocalist behind Zimmy. See Ya.

  • A terrific insight into the development of Paul's definitive version of this great song.

Excellent though this is in its own right, the 1977 version is far superior. Still, it's a delight to hear the evidence that the supreme interpretation was clearly the product of years of honing and improvement.

    Great post!

  • I agree, however, why is his hair brown here and it then turn red O_O!?

  • Unfortunate lighting. At least, it didn't look green, as red hair can if the lighting is really bad. (As a redhead, I know)

  • i think tabs on the website are for this version more than the others.

  • Not as masterly or as moving as 77 but his diction is clearer on this one. The narrative is important and on the later version I always wonder just what he's smiling at.

  • yeah. he smiles alot when he's playing. at least once in each song. :] its very nice.

  • This man is an underrated genius.

  • I suppose people's opinion is there own and that's what makes music so good, but for me bradys is the one - maybe its because of the hint of sean-nós decoration in his voice.

  • thankyou very very much for putting this up :-)

  • not as good as his 77 version not as much ornamentation in his singing. still very good tho

  • This is the ultimate Arthur Mcbride!

Dylan and everyone else looks here to get it right.

    Thank you PAUL!

  • I think Bob Dlyan not only got it right but got it better, but like Neil Young wrote, "All you critics, ..are just pissin' in the wind." I gotta pee, better check the weather-vane,"don't need a weather-man to tell ya which way the wind blows"

  • I love this, I am trying to learn it and its driving me insane. How old was he?

  • If check out Paul's website, you will find the tabs there....if of course you havn't worked it out by now.

  • Nothing compares with this version!

No one else can even come close!

  • except his 1977 version, i'd say!

  • indeed.

  • open G?

    Me thinks

  • fantastic song never knew it before... an instant classic for me

  • Another treasure! The first version of this song I heard still remains my favourite. I first heard it by a Calgary, Alberta-based group called The Wild Colonial Boys. Very hard-to-find but well worth a listen if you can.

  • That was lovely!

  • Irish folk singing as good as it gets - well done young Brady from Strabane in the Wee North!

  • strabane indeed...fantastic stuff

  • does anybody have nobody knows

  • great VERSION............

  • It's amazing to contrast this version with that of Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick - totally different! I believe Bob Dylan recorded a version too?

  • Dylan recorded it on the little remembered but wonderful album "As good as I've been to you".

  • Ballad.

  • Top class...

  • Beautiful ballad and great guitar accompaniment. W

  • Recently discovered this man and the great songs he sings. Wow! talent indeed.

  • This guy does this song like no one else. His gutar work is amazing. I love it Paul.

  • "Good morning, good morning" the Sargeant did cry

and "the same to you gentlemen" we did reply

intending no harm but none to pass by

for it being on Christmas morning

But says he "my fine fellows if you will enlist

its ten guineas in gold I will slip in your fist

and a crown in the bargain to kick up the dust

and drink the Kings health in the morning"

  • Oh me and my cousin young Arthur McBride

as we went a walking down by the seaside

now mark what followed, and what did betide

for it being on Christmas morning

Out for recreation, we went on a tramp,

and met Sargeant Napper and Corporal Brown

and a little wee drummer intending to count

for the day it being pleasant and charming

  • Have to listen again. Definatly good stuff, and i can understand the words.

  • Aw this song is brilliant ive heard it before once i think and could never find it its brilliant. I love this its class.

  • Good video, but I think I might need the lyrics to read while listening to this!

  • This song and this version is absolutely amazing.

  • ireland.dude i dont understand any of this song lol what is it about ?

  • It's about an British soldier who is in Ireland to recruit Irishmen for their never-ending war with France. Arthur McBride and his cousion say they don't want to join, and the soldiers are offended, and say they'll kill them if they offend them again.

  • Then they take their shillelaghs, or walking sticks, and knock them out, rob the drummer and kick his drum into the ocean, and throw the sergeant's sword in with it. Then they go on their way, all on a Christmas morning.

  • jaysus´- I was afraid me mobile would go off and disturb the performance - absolutely got lost in it !

  • absolutely top notch!! makes me want to bring "whacking shilleleaghs" down on the talentless heads of the plastic modern performers....

  • @SydFstyd very well said, true talent can't be ignored,i don't think there'll be much discussion in 36yrs time about todays performances,i'm surprised to hear a few negative comments about this performance,it's his version and it has evolved over the years, planxtys version is excellent but paul is one man on the stage and the sound he produces with just his guitar is excellent,i don't think he can be touched.

  • @pauricbr People say this. I dunno. Madonna hit the public with Like a Virgin 25 years ago. Seemed to learn dancing in aerobics classes. Didn't sing that well and still doesn't. Her lyrics don't even reach mediocre. She plays no instrument. And we still hear about her, and many insist that, not only is she a Goddess but intelligent and a humanitarian. I just stumbled on Paul Brady a few days ago. Played him incessently through the day all this week. But until Monday, I never heard of him.

  • @SydFstyd i suspect you mean the westlifes and the boyzones and the crystal swings

  • Love it. Paul Brady owns this song.

  • BRILLIANT. BRILLIANT!!!

  • go on paul you rebel.

  • This is a real classic!! It doesn't get much better!!

  • Beautiful rendition of an amazing song

  • This is the best example of artistry in this genre at this time that we have...absolutely stunning. It never fails to move me.

  • What about planxty?

  • Savage!!
