  • If you dont mind me asking since its been many years, what was the humiliating experience u said you had at the Safeway checkout? i couldnt hear anything

  • Wow, I watched all of these, how cool! Are you still in MB and are you married to Mindy now??

  • @TheMichelleunwin No, and THANK GOD no. :)

  • Wow, this was filmed one year before I was born! O_O

  • @BearGirl26 wow, this was filmed 3 years AFTER i was born o_O

  • wow, this is retro

  • voice hasn't changed at all... how old were you back then?

  • @gotmilkbob101 I was 18 in this video.

  • What were the people laughing at?

  • Did you used to post your videos anywhere back then?

  • @SonikFan97 The internet didn't exist back then (at least not in anything resembling the public form it is now), there was nowhere to post them to. These were either done for fun, to show to friends, or parts of Video Letters to distant friends.

  • i like your MMC Retro vid's its like looking into the past,

i think you should do more video of this type, for the future, for example maybe get some footage of you going though the barging bins.

  • Its a epic movie u have showed us buddy:-)

Must be cool to see yourself back in time that many years ago.

Keep up the good work and dont listen to noobs whining.

Go and whine at that Bieber guy instead:-)

Btw a retarded question perhaps but how much was a bag of chips back then and now these days in America. All junk food seem so cheap over there:-)

    Greetings from Sweden

    /Daniel

  • Haha, this is awesome :-)

U had any ideathen were u actually are now in life mate?

  • Didn't you hate how they released movies recorded in EP/SLP? The first hint was how light the boxes were when you picked them up. Anyway, last comment I promise.

  • I used to rent VHS tapes of episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the tapes were recorded in EP Mode.

  • I know your not buying the generic brands. Did you ever have a specific type of blank tape that you preffered? How much did you pay for all those back then?

  • Great videos. You should do the PO BOX thing that the Coolduder youtube site does. I would certainly dig through my DVD's, and maybe even Laserdiscs in search of titles that I could send your way. The Coolduder guys always manage to get a bunch of cool stuff in the mail from their viewers.

  • lol, what was with "AW SHIT!" *you look over*

    lol, hilarious.

  • are you sure this isnt just a "movie that Looks Like a Home Movie"

    LOL.

Im glad to know that your dry humor is present throughout the decades.

  • $5.99? For videotapes? Holy cow... I'd forgotten how much they were back then. Given the amount of recording I'm sure you did back then, I'll bet it was difficult for anyone else to find videotapes in Selkirk, lol.

  • What kind of camcorder was used to capture this?

  • haha nice

  • How dare you upsize a video to HD Zaranyzerak! That's my trick!! Haha :D!

Great video, you haven't changed much at all.

  • Heheh, interesting to see, I was not 3 years old at that time.

There's definitely -100% doubt that it's you too.

I like how you made the intro/outro-thing in retro-style too. :D

  • @DamageIncM lol i wasnt even born and was not to be born for 6 more years...makes me feel so young.

  • I should've known there's be something with the Little Prince in the video too. I imagine that show was even more well known in Canada than it was in the US.

  • LoL!!! Back to the 80's look!!! I also had an OP t-shirt!

What do you work with, Sean?

  • Thanx for uploading this Sean :)

Your voice sure hasn´t changed that much ;) hehe

Man this truly gave me a flashback from the days of buying STACKS of bulky VHS tapes for the cam recorded stuff I filmed back in the early 90:s. Good times ;)

Can´t wait for that old Laserdisc review you promised to upload ;)

  • Wow, You talk exactly the same. I don't know why that's weard.

Didn't Marty ( from back to the future ) have a home video camera that took full sized vhs tapes? Or was that just movie BS?

Had twin peaks not finnished yet when you made this?

  • I think there were some VHS camcorders out around that time, but they would have been brand spanking new in 1985. The big deal with 8mm was it was a much more compact format. The majority of VHS cameras at the time were still those big, clunky camera-only units where you'd have to lug around half a VCR (which would take a MASSIVE battery pack, kinda like an oversized machine gun cartridge) to power it and record.

As for Twin Peaks, it had JUST started the second season at this point.

  • Oh, so when you said it was conected to a vcr did you mean those bulky cameras?

Any way, I'm looking forward to some of your old school play throughs. Perhaps you can put in some commentary over the gameplay? *crosses fingers*

  • never heard of twin peaks can you tell me about the story :)

  • how old r you in this video my man sean

  • 18! Yes, I actually was that young once...and this is the video that proves it. ;)

  • cool...you were awesome from the older years ohh and by the way i would like to send you some stuff if you want?

  • @Zaranyzerak Speaking of Twin Peaks, I just picked up Season 2(brand new, still sealed) today at Big Lots for, wait for it... $6!!!! I couldn't believe it! The Season 2 set goes for about $40 brand new on Amazon.com. Unfortunately they didn't have Season 1, so I'll still be on the hunt for a real bargain on that one!

  • HAHAA. I laughed so hard when you went to safeway...saw the videos of Platoon etc and said Wow..only $9.99 for these. Classic.

  • this is the coolest thing ever. Unreal to think what I was doing back in 1990. I was 13, building my vhs collection (damn were they expensive then) playing Rad Racer & Mike Tyson's Punch Out on my 8 bit Nintendo. Times were soooooo much easier then. Thanks for posting this. Love to see more.

  • Wow! I can't believe you did videos back then. I wish I had some simular tapes stashed away somewhere (and perhaps I do, but it's not a lot I can tell you that). I think this is fantastic - it's so fun to see what you were like back then. :)

  • Wait a joe, who the hell is that girl you're with!!!! what have you done with Anetta?!?!Uy3?

Is there a video of you going nuts because you met Anetta?

And did that lady finish her adventure game?

These questions need answers dear boy, and I'll be hounding you until they are fulfilled

  • Do you have any videos older than this one?

  • Yes. The oldest video I have of me is from 1981 when I was 9 years old. But there are numerous other people in it as well, who probably wouldn't want me posting it on YouTube. Then there are a lot of old Super 8mm films I made, mostly during 1984-85, and a handful of stuff from 1987-89. I'll likely post some segments of those at some point. I posted a couple of those a while back - "The Adventures of Pierce and Secret" and "How to Breakdance"

  • 10 stars of of 5! that was great.

  • No-name videos ! dude Platoon was in there !

  • Oh yes, the MOVIES are (for the most part) A-list stuff. It was just el-cheapo no name video company releases of them. Guess they had some kind of licensing deal with the studios.

  • They were an odd selection, I love that your inflections are really similar

  • wow this is awesome, back in the day lol

  • nice glasses at trh start lol

  • You REALLY need to bring back the old "do." LOL!

You were a slim little thing weren't ya!

  • this is insanely cool. It is literally a glimpse back in time. It is very jarring how much things have changed in the past 20 years. Not only your appearence but when you are at the store you can just see how early 90s looked. Oh and on a side note did you here about X-men Volume 3 and 4 having the airdate oreder of episodes? They literally do not have like the first 3 episodes right after the Phoenix saga on either volume.

  • cool

  • Awesome! It's cool to see these "glimpses back in time"!

  • holy crap this is great

  • wow thx for sharing this old video, this was b4 i was born lol

  • omg when i first saw this i thought you were like 15 lol how terribly i was wrong XD

  • sweet vid , i love the girl on the ckeckout lol

  • good quality for 1990

  • Speaking of VHS.

Back in December of 2005, I went into the real canadian super store, and they were selling Brand New Sylvania 4-Head Hi-Fi VCRs for $29.99. I grabbed one and it still works.

This two years before I got my HDTV.

  • Wow 10 bucks for a VHS recorded in EP Mode.

Good price for a movie, But crappy quality.

  • Wow you were so young then. Good video.obviously back then they didnt care that you video taped in stores. LOL THE REGISTERED TALKED. and strangly enough even tho i was really little then i remember those polar vhs tapes cuz we had one of those old cameras that recorded to vhs.

  • It's really odd to see exactly how much and how little you've changed in two decades.

  • wow Sean you were handsome as a youngster to cool. i was born in 80 i take it your older then me huh. i guess things did not work out with Mindy it looks like was that way before Anetta. your vids rock Sean as allways.

  • HEY THING!!! Thats funny - I got to get that video out again!!! The good old days!!! No mention of the Saga of Selkirk hey? The retro one you should put up is the one where you herd that guy from your townhouse in Selkirk, yelling at his ex,,,,, talking about what he would do on a part of her body..... lets leave it at that.

  • Hahaha! I actually JUST captured the original footage where I told you about that, coincidentally! :D Somehow I don't think that PARTICULAR story would QUITE fit in with the Multimedia Chronicles topics...lol!

  • I've got to get off my ASS and send you the latest Video Letter! (yes folks, Bluejaay is THE Jason from the vids!) I finished it almost a YEAR ago...I'll throw in an update disc with it too, since I imagine a lot of the LATE BREAKING NEWS is a bit outdated by now...lol!

  • WHOA! you were young and skinny back then :O

  • At 6:25 - 6:30, was the cashier afraid of being filmed or something? lol

  • look how young you looked.

  • Lol at 3:50. By the time Polaroid was mading VHS tapes. I used to buy some of them to record some movies on TV back in the 90's.

  • Yes! I was wondering when someone was going to mention the OP shirt...lol! I also had a bunch of those (probably still do, packed away somewhere...), that really was one of the "in" brands for quite a while!

  • oh my god, this is sooo wierd...

  • The voice hasnt changed!

  • this is very weird...

you look younger, but you sound 100% the same!

    haha this is entertainment!

  • Awesome. Nice image and sound too. What's the full brand-name of the camera?

BTW, your hair isn't as bad as I thought it would be lol. You look younger than your age though.

  • You should concentrate on MMC retros with improved newer film narrations from you.

  • Wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose? The purpose is to show what things were like back then, what I was into back then, etc. I do SOME new voiceovers and stuff where I felt some more explanation was necessary, or if it's a video game walkthrough that didn't have any voiceover originally.

  • I didn't mean voiceovers (I hate voiceovers lol). What I meant was at the end of some of the retro video, you fade out/in and you come back to explain some things you'd like to let us know or to share about it if necessary. Anyways.

  • Ah, I see. Well, for the most part I'll be doing any necessary clarifications through text captions and the aforementioned voiceovers form time to time, I really want to keep all the visuals "old school."

  • BTW what was the camera you used in that film?

  • It was a Sony CCD-F45 8mm Handycam. I talk about it a bit more in some of the upcoming episodes of MMC Retro.

  • Okay, the sched may be mixed up, but that's not what's important here.

    A. That was cool

    B. I was right, you look like me except skinny.

  • wow the retro logo looked great. brilliant vid Z!

  • i guess this will be my favourite on new MMC

  • Thanks! I tried to pick the nicest looking "old school" font, then rendered it in lower quality to make it look older as well. So you might notice it has a bit of "roughness" to it that the regular MMC logo doesn't have. :) Then of course the new "8-bit-esque" version of the theme tune. Glad ya liked it!

  • awesome vid

  • wow you changed alot

  • Wow, you were a skinny little fucker, weren't you? :)

  • Hehe wow well worth the wait Z! The new Retro logo is the bomb! Did you have to do any audio redubbing or was the raw footage audio still in tact?

  • Nope, the original audio is all intact. I take very good care of my old home vids. :) You'll hear newly recorded voiceovers from time to time (for video game walkthroughs and the occasional reminiscence about something), but all the actual segments like these will be all original audio.

  • Sweet color me impressed! I'm working on a long awaited video of my own as a type this. If you catch my drift hehe!

  • This is really great LOVE IT!!!

  • i wonder how people lived without internet in those days

  • ur even bad ass when ur young!

  • That hair style was so 1990. :D We used to have Safeways in Britiain, but then they became Morrisons. Nice video.

  • awesome... I think it's cool that you kept record of all this stuff.

  • OMG you been doing this for awhile lol good stuff lol

  • I love this! You're really a pioneer of V-logging, sir!

  • I wish I could time travel

  • This is wicked cool! Sean you're awesome!

  • I can't believe it's Zaranyzerak!

  • Awesome Fashions you need to wear those pants in your latest Vlogs :P

  • This was a delight to watch. A vlog before vlogs! Somewhat comforting to know grocery stores haven't changed a bit in 20 years... Except for those nurse-like uniforms on the ladies... Bring 'em back, Safeway!

  • Nice one Sean keep them coming

  • I'm sorry but from the moment you put the jacket on all I could think was that I was watching Rick Moranis as Bob McKenzie.

    No offence.

  • Why didn't you get 'Puff the magic dragon' huh!? there can not be a logical reason behind such a thing. By the way, were you my age when this was taken? if I change this much in 20 years I will piss my pants.

Oh and by the way, I love that you are finally putting these videos up, cant wait for the terminator 2 playthrough ;)

  • hehehe...actually the one I was kicking myself for not getting was Thriller! Always love that video.

Might be a while before we see the T2 playthrough! Since I'm going through these old segments chronologically... But I'm sure you'll find plenty of stuff in the series to tide you over in the mean time!

  • I spent the whole video trying to see the cheap prices on everything in the store...

  • dude I really dig this video. its soooo u. haha u talk the exact same and everything. great stuff all around

  • This is awesome.

    Great job Zaranyzerak.

  • Totally rock that hair again. You are well over 6 foot tall aren't you. Tall and slender, great around the town vlog from the first man that has probably officially posted, too bad we didn't have you tube almost 19 years ago. Your a legend sean, also thank you Mindy for helping out on this epic video. I am soooo looking forward to next week, hell i will be glued to your channel forever. lol.

  • bloody hell you have regenerated lol

    nice vid

  • awesomeness just oozes from you Zaranyzerak

  • haha nice man

  • HOLY WOW you such a baby face, LOL very interesting?

  • Holy crap, this is the most awesome thing ever!!!

  • 18 Year old Zaranyzerak... The modern world was NOT meant to see this. =P

Jeeze, even in 1990 the awesomeness just flowed, and you're definitely a Canadian from looking at this! ( I wish I was 15 in the 90's. =[) Great video!

Oh, and just a thought... Jadia.....Jadzia.... Coincidence? DUN DUN DUNNNNNN

  • I was not prepared mentally for how young you would be.

    I was like HOLY.

You should totally rock that hairstyle again XD.

  • Aaaarghhhh! I'm confused!

You started recording Youtube videos prior to the invention of youtube!

    Thats planning ahead!

  • This is quite interesting, I like it.

  • LOL

Your Voice Is Almost The Same As Now (Only A Slight Change In The Pitch Here And There) XD XD

You Bought A Lot Of Tapes In The Mall

Did The Tapes Cost5.99$ If I Herd Right?

8.34-8.41 (That Was Your Current Added Voice?)

    And You Look Good Thinner

    Very Nice Video!

    Looking Forward!

  • Thanks! And no, this video is 100% old footage. Nothing has been added other than the titles and captions.

  • You cropped it to make yourself a stick man, dont lie!

  • hahahahaha wow The Z mister younger hahahahaha holy..................

  • Oh wow, this was cool! I was born a few months after this video was made (January '91) but it all is pretty much the same time frame and its like having a time machine to look back into a time period I never was fully aware during. Oh and its a weekend too, that makes things extra special!

  • Amazing!!! Was looking forward to this new series a lot! Awesome retro video man!

  • Wow! This brings back some memories, the hair, the fluorescent coloured jackets, over-priced crappy EP VHS tapes. I kind of miss 1990 actually. It never knew what it was, not the 80s, not really the 90s yet, but it was still awesome dude! (I believe that was the most popular expression of something you liked back then)

  • Wow! 'Ali Baba And The Forty Thieves'. I used to play that game on Atari 800 many years ago. Awesome game! Another great one by the same programmer was 'The Return Of Heracles'...or something like that...great memories!

  • Awesome! And here I was thinking I might be the only person who actually remembered that game. Loved Ali Baba, it was my introduction to turn-based adventure gaming. Pretty much all my friends and I were hooked on it. I'm proud to say I was the only one out of all my friends who ever managed to actually finish it! I'll have to track down that other one...never knew he did another one!

  • I absolutely LOVE "vintage" stuff like this! Even if it's watching commercials from the 80's and 90's, it's so much fun to see anything that was a real capture of how different things were.

    You look like you're 12.

  • Hahaha! Yeah, I'm a sucker for this kinda stuff too. Hence why I still keep around all these old vids. Plenty more to come, hope you enjoy the ride! I've always had a bit of a baby face.

  • the check out girl wanted to be in one of your erotic videos,,,,couldnt you tell,,,,,,,,,and who or what was this made for

  • I wish! She was hot... As for what this was made for, originally it was just a home video made for the hell of it, then I turned it into a segment for a video letter to a distant friend.

  • How many more of these awesome recordings do you have?

  • Literally hundreds. MMC Retro will be going for a loooong time...

  • Very cool video.Didn't know that wireless remotes were around for cameras in 1990. I was just a kid then.

  • I didn't know you had the ability to grow your hair back and regress your age at will. :P

Looking forward to more old-school Z.

  • hey z does canada have woolworthes or big w. i live in australia these are popular and well known stores here aside from target and kmart.

  • Dude, that is preety cool. Thanks for sharing memories with the fans.

  • It blows me away that you have the exact same structure in making videos since 1990 (the year I was born). Did laserdiscs have bargain bins in that year as well?

  • hay zman the mmcr looks to be gold talk too you in 15 at the chat

  • LMAO!! "I have a little device here that I think you might find interesting....it's called a remote control!" XD

Back then high tech -- now funny to see how impressive that once was.

    Did your dad fire you??

Zaranyzerak -- setting the time and date on the camcorder correctly since 1990.

    One last thing:

How much did those blank VHS tapes cost you?

  • You didn't hear the speaking cash register?? 5.99 each for those puppies

And yes, my dad fired me. But he hired me again later..

  • wow cool. nice to see the young zaranyzerak... i wonder how mindy ended up. guess annetta is hotter... thanks for the upload man.

  • Mindy ended up barefoot and pregnant living in a trailer park with a plumber. No joke.

  • If only that checkout lady could see you now. The weirdo with the video camera is now the coolest person on Planet Earth.

  • WoW

That cashier was in a hurry.

  • I am wondering what is your opinuion of the 2012 end of days prediction

  • Same as every other end of the world prediction throughout the history of mankind. Complete and utter bollocks.

  • HOLY SHIT, WOW NICE DUDe

  • its so weird to hear someone say "only $9.99 for these" for vhs tapes lol

  • Dude, I have no idea who this kid is but he looks just like Davan MacIntire. Good job on the voice dub too, the sync is nearly flawless.

  • That VHS display is awesome... I notice that weird animated Puff the Magic Dragon cartoon...

  • this is awesome haha.

  • WOW

  • Academy Ratio? Nooooooooooo!

    *pops out of existence*

  • Blame YouTube and their stupid cinemascope player (which is apparently to accomodate the new YouTube 3D features...). Should be back to normal once the HD version processes. 16x9 should be the DEFAULT, period. Extra wide 3D player should be an OPTION, not the default since only a tiny, tiny, TIIIINY percentage of vids are actually going to use it.

  • I finally found how to upload videos! I render them in 1440x720. Since I make most of my videos with my screen capture program, I can capture videos up to 1440x900. And what's with the 3D thing on youtube? Is that possible?

  • Use 1280x720 if you want proper 16x9 aspect ratio, otherwise things might look a bit squeezed or stretched. As for 3D, yes.

Here's a video from YouTube's main channel that describes it: watch?v=5ANcspdYh_U

There is a drop-down menu that let's you view the video using different types of 3D processing.

  • What the hell is the point of that? I'm getting sick of this gimmick fad already.

  • I have no problem with some kind of polarized 3D coming to our homes. But this YouTube 3D is just the old, tired techniques that barely function yet again...not to mention they require MONDO processor power to run anywhere close to resembling a decent framerate.

But worst of all, it means we get this stupid EXTREEEEEME widescreen player, when 16x9 should CLEARLY be the default.

  • I was wondering why the screen size changed. I thought they were trying to fit scope movies on here or something. This is more retarded.

And the framerate on that video was awful. Holy crap, my cell phone takes smoother video than that.

  • Well, I suppose now you CAN do scope ratio videos and have it fill that player. I saw something on the Help forums about what resolution to use to do that. But screw that. No consumer cameras can record in that aspect ratio, so the only way to do it would be to film something 16x9 or 4x3 and crop it to fit. No thanks.

  • Well I know Youtube offers movies to watch now so I thought it was for that.

  • That would be another use for it then, I guess. Still shouldn't be the default, though.

  • No it shouldn't be. I don't know why they can't have the window fit the native resolution.

  • Because that would make too much sense.

  • HOLY

    SHIT
