hey, im super judgemental and telling people they suck even though im on youtube talking about sustainability. that place is awesome so shut the fuck up.
Hello were is this? I used to live on a float house in Effingham inlet, I live in Scotland now but will probably move back some time and im always up for meeting like minded people.
It may be 100% sustainable but I would have to doubt that they use it that way since I see food in BOXES on the table and the plastic barrel etc. Does anyone actually know what 100% sustainable is? It means NOT buying anything and to do that you can't have anything boxed or plastic and that takes years. This is a lie from people with way too much money.
I really liked your video! I have dreamed of living in a place like that for a long time, but until I saw your place I didnt have a clue. Thank you for your insperation.
Iwas wondering if you guys also commercial fish. the aluminum skiff that I guess your husband was in is for fishing (siening maybe or gill net?)
I think that raising native fish in pens would be a great way to provide food that would be avalible anytime.
I'm not a gardener so this may be a naive question but living in a place that has less than mild winters and a lot of days with no sun how do you sustain growing plants, even with your greenhouses? Are you augmenting the ability to grow by using artificial light in your greenhouses? And if so how do you sustain that in winter months when you can't generate sufficient power from sunlight? Clearly you have this figured out but I'm confused. Thanks.
it seemed like a nice place to live until that annoying little drumming Robot contraption kicked in, why can't people just keep it as peaceful as possible?
I see alot of manufactured goods. The only way to live 100% self suffeicient is to do as the natives do. These folks may have cheaped out on alot of things but still alot of manufactured goods here. non-natural,etc....
Do you ever have problems with the authorities over issues like boat license, taxes, environmental issues, waste disposal issues, property water right issues? This is a really cool life style. This is something that money cannot buy. More power to you.
someone should inform the government immediately about this!! These people are obviously breaking the law by not paying land taxes or working 1/3rd of their life away!!!
they must pay for this terrorism against our society!!!! TERRORISTS!!!
@pwjm lol i got your satire. But "working away 1/3 of their life" !?!?! In what world do you live in where you can retire after working only a third? lol more like 4/5ths
Why in the world would does this video have some stupid pop music that comes in and out? What does pop music have to do with people who live off the grid? I would think that the pop music represents everything they hate.
Hello from across the Georgia Strait on Powell Lake. We live almost full time on a float cabin up the lake. It is much smaller but we have a floating garden. I am intrigued by your greenhouse. How do you keep it from getting damaged in the winds. Our place gets hit pretty hard during winter storms. - Margy
Hi Margy, this is a message from Catherine : we use 10ml plastic, use wood strips nailed down over the plastic every 15inches or so,keep the greenhouse low... ours are about 7ft. high and we also have created wind breaks around our greenhouses.
I like this Float House, this video is one of my favorite. I just want to know, this is a vacational house or people live there? What happen if the boat demage? how you buy food, go work, have electricity?
They live there all year round and have been for around 17 years. This type of system needs constant attention since it is on the water and needs constant repair. They are artists so work on their float house and sell their art in cities. They grow most of their own food and only go to the small town, Tofino BC to buy the few things they can't grow. They have solar panels and a generator for electricity.
So is the body of water they're on located on public property, or private? If it's public, how have they gotten away with it? I can't imagine the government in the USA allowing that, much less Canada. I'd be worried about being kicked out...after all, where (and how) would you tow that thing? Cool, though.
they are anchored to crown land and pay taxes for that priviledge. They are floating in the ocean, and the oceans are public and free, it is only the land that is owned and the piece they are tied to is owned by the government so they pay a fee every year to tie a few ropes to the shore.
THAT is Amazing from all that green gardening from Florida the sunshine state where many people are not allowed to have a life like that... TO have solar panels to make electrical power just seems to be banned unless it is tens of thousands of us dollars for what is said to be only a few hundreds in most other areas
They painted it this color because it is the color of the first flower that grows after a fire has taken the forest. It is the color of fireweed and it is a color that is in harmony with the natural surroundings
Very nice place! It is very inspiring. Awful camera work, though! Keep that camera still, please, it is hard to focus and see anything ... and I want to see it!
I agree on the camera work! I'd just bought a new camera and discovered the video part of it while visiting. The utube clip was put together by my niece because I wanted to show my friends at work where I went on vacation. I intend to go there again this summer and would really like to do another clip that is more purposeful.
is there a contact for these folks? i ripped out a picture of this house ages ago and just rediscovered it and would love to find out more about this!
Holy Moly Lindsay. That is fantastic. You must be very proud of them. I wish that more of our young can lead the way for us old uns that have so much to learn from them.
Excellent! Is it okay for me to boast that Jean and I helped get this living work of art started?
How come? April 1, 1956, Catherine came to be our first, and only, daughter. That was when I was the UC minister at Tide Head, a small town five miles west of Campbellton, NB--just east of Quebec. Her brother, Turner, now a musician and teacher, came along, in 1958, in Montreal.

@becky3086 It's self-reliant. Most people use 'self sufficient' and 'self reliant' synonomously. Still absolutely gorgeous and an excellent idea.
