I met Trey about a year after this. He used to jam with the house band at a bar in Plattsburgh, New York in 1990. I was a freshman at SUNY Plattsburgh. I had no idea who he was but I was really impressed by his playing and talked to him a few times between sets. I still scratch my head in amazement when I think the guy I met in that empty bar on a weeknight would become heir to Jerry Garcia's throne. It's mind boggling.
@marathonguy999 According to phish.net: "The band’s Halloween costumes included Trey wearing devil horns, latex pants, and strap-on breasts (which he ran around fondling during the Ninja Custodian’s set) and Mike wearing a dog-faced mask."
I will never forget that night... I would LOVE to see more songs from that night in 1989! Any one remember those girls with a huge bag of doobies, passing joints out to everyone in the audience (well, the passing them out in the stage area which was pretty small). Then they did a mosh-pit song later... There were so many corners and rooms where they played that night.. Great crowd.. One of the best concerts I ever saw. God, 22 years ago.
Somewhere along the way they came out w/ boxes full of Grand Union Mac n cheese and started passing them out from the stage w/out explanation. Then they start David Bowie. A crazy, monster Bowie. Right in the middle of an epic jam -they freeze. All you can hear is 300 dancing mac n cheese boxes. Shooka-shooka-shooka.Before anyone notices what's happening (seemed like forever) and before the 1st frat boy could 'Wooo!' they unfreeze and pick up exactly where they stopped. I'll never forget it.
So to answer someones ? a couple of post back Trey is playing a Time Guitar made by Paul Languedoc the guy who has made all of the guitar's Trey plays now. This was broadcast on Burlington Public TV in the 80's. I am sure there is a way to find the whole broadcast somewhere on the fabulous interweb.
This was a great time and for me a high point in their long career. Some people comment about sloppy. I interpret their playing at this time as raw. There was an intensity and a visceral quality that was mind blowing shifting from light to dark and back. One of their show flyers from this time described them as "synapse searing" and I think that most who know from this time wold agree. It/they/we were magic and compelling. When the show was over we would all hang it was fun and easy. Good times.
i have to disagree.. i LOVE this gin.. i see a lot of posts saying it sux. i highly disagree and i see why one would think so. but to me? it has origionality...
This i s great video to see Phish before they even themselves recognized themselves as what they are now.... Trey trying to be cool, w/out a shirt. great vid. thanks
heel yeah i love this. this is the phish I love. sloppy, yes, but the WAY they play sloppy is beautiful. trey's solo may sound fucked up to most but i thik it is genious. hes playing musicians music at that point and not common music. lengthening and shortening the phrase while everyone else keeps on playing the 4/4 circus beat. I love THIS phish.
In a sense, yes. But when you listen to it and if you've ever tried to play like this, its not just running away from your band mates but playing but playing the same theme in a different way that fits inside the music. Heis not completley off tempo like its his first jam session ever, it requires skill to play "whateverthfuck" inside the existing musical scheme. He is providing contrast and tension and later brings it back to a sipmle coherent sound. This is the classic phish form. out and back
That's interesting, I appreciate that musical analysis. I didn't quite get it until now. I do know that Trey likes Stravinsky, a composer who composed dissonant music, so it makes sense.
Trey without a shirt and with devil horns is pretty hilarious, but - ugh! Not a very good Gin, though! I know it's not fair to compare this to later Phish stuff, but... yuck. To be fair, it does have its moment(-s). Like at 5:39, the only time Trey plays something besides a mutation of the Gin theme.
R u sure. First show 4 me was 93 but looks to me like hes just blowing it out.prob a somewhat typical night 4 the band in 89. Strange behavior is encouraged.
I went to Goddard as well. This show was before my time, but I do know the organizers. If my memory is correct (which is a deep question for Goddard alumns)this show was actually in the sculpture building.
I used to go to Goddard college ..they are playing in what is known as the design center. I use to call it the college of misfits...much like the land of misfit toys..
Man to this day I cannot find this video. IT sounds like ass, but who cares. I was there that night. It's so funny that Trey doesn't have a shirt on. I don'tt remember that because I was pretty fuc*** up that night. But i do remember many things from that night very very well. Like that it was 70+F and pouring rain. Halloween is typically cold in VT. That night was like mid-summer. And boy did it rain. I was dancincg in the mud like some tripping hippie. Yup
Yup. I went to many, many of their shows in the 80s. Lots of long nights at Nectar's.
