  • Yup. I went to many, many of their shows in the 80s. Lots of long nights at Nectar's.

  • @jamalama You ever meet someone named Gina Halpin?

  • *bathtub gin*

  • I was there

  • @jamalama no way......you lucky bastard

  • listening to this song is encouraging because people out there will like the weirdest shit ever. lol

  • is trey shirtless here?

  • I met Trey about a year after this. He used to jam with the house band at a bar in Plattsburgh, New York in 1990. I was a freshman at SUNY Plattsburgh. I had no idea who he was but I was really impressed by his playing and talked to him a few times between sets. I still scratch my head in amazement when I think the guy I met in that empty bar on a weeknight would become heir to Jerry Garcia's throne. It's mind boggling.

  • i see trails when Trey moves and I'm not even on mushrooms...awesome.

  • Reminds me of a shirtless Jaco Pastorius, albeit a lot younger. Weird yes, but great to listen to.

  • This version is hysterical

  • Wow, I was 2 months old when they played this show

  • sorry worse than kiss when they were younger

  • Who farted at 0:46?

  • Trey as a shirtless maniac with devil horns gives me the phear.

  • Nice! I like shirtless Trey!

  • Where's Trey shirt?

  • @marathonguy999 According to phish.net: "The band’s Halloween costumes included Trey wearing devil horns, latex pants, and strap-on breasts (which he ran around fondling during the Ninja Custodian’s set) and Mike wearing a dog-faced mask."

  • oops, my wrong. I saw them in Middlebury, VT on Oct 28th, 1988.

  • I will never forget that night... I would LOVE to see more songs from that night in 1989! Any one remember those girls with a huge bag of doobies, passing joints out to everyone in the audience (well, the passing them out in the stage area which was pretty small). Then they did a mosh-pit song later... There were so many corners and rooms where they played that night.. Great crowd.. One of the best concerts I ever saw. God, 22 years ago.

  • Hey!!! Where's Trey shirt?

  • Somewhere along the way they came out w/ boxes full of Grand Union Mac n cheese and started passing them out from the stage w/out explanation. Then they start David Bowie. A crazy, monster Bowie. Right in the middle of an epic jam -they freeze. All you can hear is 300 dancing mac n cheese boxes. Shooka-shooka-shooka.Before anyone notices what's happening (seemed like forever) and before the 1st frat boy could 'Wooo!' they unfreeze and pick up exactly where they stopped. I'll never forget it.

  • WOW the fuckin trails of eveything, feels like im tripping watching this...

  • haha i was born in '89!

  • My first Phish Show!

  • Trey makes me think of animal from sesame street at about the 5:20 point. :)

  • its flea anastasio

  • love it!!!!!

  • Trey, fucking around for his own musical pleasure...been there. lol

  • thank you!

  • So to answer someones ? a couple of post back Trey is playing a Time Guitar made by Paul Languedoc the guy who has made all of the guitar's Trey plays now. This was broadcast on Burlington Public TV in the 80's. I am sure there is a way to find the whole broadcast somewhere on the fabulous interweb.

  • This was a great time and for me a high point in their long career. Some people comment about sloppy. I interpret their playing at this time as raw. There was an intensity and a visceral quality that was mind blowing shifting from light to dark and back. One of their show flyers from this time described them as "synapse searing" and I think that most who know from this time wold agree. It/they/we were magic and compelling. When the show was over we would all hang it was fun and easy. Good times.

  • mr bod

  • Shirtless with aviator glasses? Who says Phish weren't ahead of their time!

  • @mochalex They were actually playing in the nude.

  • Its like watching a modern german pop video!

  • he isn't wearing a shirt. haha. I've never seen that before...

  • wow... this compared with the '09 Halloween show. exactly 10 years.

  • 20 by my count... but its all good lol

  • haha! typo!

  • Gotta Love the Horns ...LOL

  • Good gin

  • just looks just a little stoned in the beginning

  • what kind of guitar is trey using

  • @tjkleinschmidt a Languedoc

  • I love the staccatoesque beginning blues riffs!

  • I woner if the people at this show ever thought they where seeing the best band ever to assemble?

  • I think they're trying to show you what happens if you drink to much bathtub gin...

  • this is sweet, so cool to hear some old phish. I like the guitar work

  • Yup, old Phish was the shite. Amazing how much Zappa influence is evident during this period...

  • mmmmmmmm.... old school phish

  • If I had a time machine I'd go dose out to an '89 gin with some sloppy piano!!!

  • @jmahoney666 nothing sloppy about THAT piano home slice

  • i have to disagree.. i LOVE this gin.. i see a lot of posts saying it sux. i highly disagree and i see why one would think so. but to me? it has origionality...

  • WoW. The old days....

My first Phish show was like 2 weeks after this.

Hope to see them again on this coming tour...no tix though :(

  • This is such a great song, it may sound like a zappa song since thats one of trey's biggest influences.

  • This i s great video to see Phish before they even themselves recognized themselves as what they are now.... Trey trying to be cool, w/out a shirt. great vid. thanks

  • heel yeah i love this. this is the phish I love. sloppy, yes, but the WAY they play sloppy is beautiful. trey's solo may sound fucked up to most but i thik it is genious. hes playing musicians music at that point and not common music. lengthening and shortening the phrase while everyone else keeps on playing the 4/4 circus beat. I love THIS phish.

  • So... while your back up band is playing a regular beat you can just play whatever-the-fuck and it's genious?

  • In a sense, yes. But when you listen to it and if you've ever tried to play like this, its not just running away from your band mates but playing but playing the same theme in a different way that fits inside the music. Heis not completley off tempo like its his first jam session ever, it requires skill to play "whateverthfuck" inside the existing musical scheme. He is providing contrast and tension and later brings it back to a sipmle coherent sound. This is the classic phish form. out and back

  • That's interesting, I appreciate that musical analysis. I didn't quite get it until now. I do know that Trey likes Stravinsky, a composer who composed dissonant music, so it makes sense.

  • @EdwardHancockAndX4 well said. lol

  • your comment shows how stupid you are, jonbombps, not how stupid Trey is.

  • zomg who cares

  • Comment removed

  • hehe trey looks like hes feelin a little open and philosophical for a few hours. :)

  • trey looks like he is trippy baaaallllzzzz

  • Trey Rules Guitar.

  • fa fa fa fuck the sound

    other wizzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeee

    ok

  • Trey was actually wearing huge fake breasts as well. Must have gotten too hot. And either Page or Mike had a big wolf mask on. Details hazy...

  • where was this?

  • Trey without a shirt and with devil horns is pretty hilarious, but - ugh! Not a very good Gin, though! I know it's not fair to compare this to later Phish stuff, but... yuck. To be fair, it does have its moment(-s). Like at 5:39, the only time Trey plays something besides a mutation of the Gin theme.

  • he is dressed as puck. wonderful little pucker he is....

  • R u sure. First show 4 me was 93 but looks to me like hes just blowing it out.prob a somewhat typical night 4 the band in 89. Strange behavior is encouraged.

  • this isnt real

  • trey with burns, sunglasses, and no shirt is pretty hilarious!

  • I was at this show too, you can see me with the white-blue ringer shirt in front of the stage at 1:05

    -freaky.

  • Trey has a tail, too, but you can't see it, and it disappears as soon as the acid wears off.

  • Holy Crap! I was at this show! Never heard of them before that day. Knew right from the first notes they were going to be huge. Man was I right

  • what the fuck is he wearing?

  • hmm, maybe it wasn't the design center it couldve been the haybarn...because of the lights but I thought it was the design center..lol

  • I went to Goddard as well. This show was before my time, but I do know the organizers. If my memory is correct (which is a deep question for Goddard alumns)this show was actually in the sculpture building.

  • I used to go to Goddard college ..they are playing in what is known as the design center. I use to call it the college of misfits...much like the land of misfit toys..

  • unreal footage. i love oldskool phish videos

  • Insane! Where did you get this gem? Trey looks like the devil or maybe a dirty minitour. Thanks again for posting becuase this is out of control.

  • @HaleysComet81

no..he just looks like a drunken asshole

  • these guys need to loosen up , smoke a fucking joint or something

  • Wait a minute...is that Mr. Tumnus holding that axe and singing?

  • where did you get a copy of this? on some torrent site?

  • yea this show was on the tape trader's den forums

  • @j0ndaily

Man to this day I cannot find this video. IT sounds like ass, but who cares. I was there that night. It's so funny that Trey doesn't have a shirt on. I don'tt remember that because I was pretty fuc*** up that night. But i do remember many things from that night very very well. Like that it was 70+F and pouring rain. Halloween is typically cold in VT. That night was like mid-summer. And boy did it rain. I was dancincg in the mud like some tripping hippie. Yup

  • far out thanks
