However, unfortunately, this vignet does represent the divide in African-American Amercia. Mutual intolerance and suspicion, as seen in Jesse Jackson's reaction to President Obama, during the campaign.

Every African-American male who isn't wearing a suit, and wears "urban" dresses is not neglecting his kids, just as every African-American male wearing a suit isn't necessarily taking great care of his family.

@missapriori It's a shame that this person presented the 2nd personality as only ignorant and irresponsible. There are more dimensions to both sides' characters that are worth exploring and criticizing. There's a deep-rooted history behind calling successful blacks Uncle Toms. 1 of its roots is a sense of loss of identity and social commitment to one's community, all for the sake of gaining the larger white society's attention and approval. Your statement proves the strategy effective.

@cymonebreathe I wrote a whole essay in response to your comment, and realized at the last moment that I did use very problematic phrasing last year, in using the term idiot. I just looked back at this, and after a year, and many circumstances, I want to say that I was trying to argue against the use of the word Uncle Tom. *sigh* Your comment comes after reading me reading the Willie Lynch letter a while ago, and I am definitely not going to sit here and downgrade any part of my culture >>

@cymonebreathe as it exists in America, or look down at my fellow black people for ridiculous things like behavior and preference. So I do agree with your saying there are dimensions to both sides that deserve exploration and understanding, but I'm not going to hate the term Uncle Tom any less, because the phrase does perpetuate anger within our race, and tears us apart. I guess I've been on the receiving end of it so many times over simple behavior and attitude, that I saw this and exploded.
