The issue ended up being the tail servo. I was running the Futuba S3114 on the tail and it was too sensetive to the static build up. Unplugged the servo and no more problem. Plug the servo in and remove the tail rotor blades and no problem. Leave the S3114 on with the tail rotor blades and It would cause a complete shut down! I have since replaced it with the Futuba 9257 digital. Not a single issue since.
You are probably getting it too hot with no main rotor installed. What kind of amps are were you pushing?
