i was looking at getting the diamondback overdrive 29 or the specialized rockhopper 29er. It looks like all your bikes have front and rear suspension. would the bikes im looking at not be able to hit these types of trails?

This is freeride, really full sus is needed just to absorb the drop offs, i would stay clear of anything with much more than a 1m drop off, not onto a nice transition on my bike (Kona blast deluxe 2009, but with rockshox recon 351 forks) having said that I have done the MegaValanche 2 years now and plenty more riding in the alps and got big respect for doing it on a hardtail.

I would say get full sus if you want to freeride or downhill seriously, hardtail for price

XC-CROSS COUNTRY-riding in forests etc (on paths without any jumps, no extreme)

DH-DOWNHILL-goin down from a mountain (typically you go up the mountain with a lift,going down on a special prepared track, jumps,gaps, hardcore :P without any skills you can really damage yourself)

FR-FREERIDE -going down from mountains(pretty much the same as DH,but the track is not completely prepared,you choose where you want to go down.

For every kind of bikin you will need a special prepared bike.
