this is great the first 7 seconds or so i thought it could be shit. but hey jimi started of shit somtimes as well like the isle of white red house but done a great solo
Hands down, the best hendrix cover of red house yet! I went to the hendrix tribute concert this year and none of those artists even compared to this version of red house. Imo, I think he even plays it better than randy hansen
Very cool of you to go out of your way to say that. That has to be one of the more positive comments for Steve's ability. although he's a big Hansen fan, I'm sure he'll dig hearing that.
@MajesticSuperiorHen Np. I also wanna add his tone is probably closest to hendrix's live shows as well. I would love to know more about his gear. From watching I can see a big headstock strat.. maybe a vintage strat, hard to stay for sure.. and in the background, looks like a plexi half stack? I gotta know what fuzz he's using. Any info would be incredible!
I've had these questions before, so I have most of my answers, sort of ready.
The guitar is mostly stock, 1975 American made Stratocaster, except it was re-fretted with jumbo frets and it has Sperzel tuning gears. Steve has said most of his tone comes from his 1969 100 watt Plexi Marshall, which is set up with a very clean sound (no distortion) and his particular way of EQing the amp. For the rest of his equipment, just click on my name and go to the bottom of my channel page.
It's your guess on which Fuzz or distortion was used. He says, although the Roger Mayer fuzzes do sound a little different from each other, they also sounded similar too, so they were exchanged often. When playing in clubs where volume is a kept low, he will combine a couple of pedals to get more sustain, when natural feedback won't kick in. The pedal missing from the pictures, but used in some of these recordings, an old Tycobrahe Octavia.
A mentally ill maxtaylor1410 said: 'this is a great version on guitar, now just get rid of that jabba the hutt playin drums and it will be perfect'
That's a really, REALLY 'intelligent' comment. I say the (fantastic) drummer stays and jabba the blabba mouth (you!) leave. Yeah, that'll be 'perfect.'
I know San Diego is right, but I don't remember him mentioning New York Pop. I know some are his own licks. I'm sure he told me, but I can't remember the other Hendrix version he grabbed licks from.
@MajesticSuperiorHen If you have RealPlayer installed you can download any YouTube video. Just point your mouse's cursor over the video screen and a rectangular Download This Video button appear in the upper right, just above the video window.

hey that was great! been meaning to learn up that version off "in the west" ever since I bought that album. its the most dynamic and energetic piece of out right bluse bliss i have ever heard. you guy did justice man. thanks for the lesson.now I can just watch how you do it and hope I can keep up.............
the sound on mine... because of the mic... was shit.... imm not saying im the best....... or that i am better even..... the drummer is fucking it up too.....
this band is tight!!!!., when i heard the intro from, i had to pick up my guitar. Lord have mercy, you guys gave this song what it deserved, heart and pure soul. thanks for sharing your beautiful version with the world. Wish i was there to jam with you on this one, sweet voice too, with souflful chops! 5PLUS PLUS PLUS STARS
Really nice cover, good feel and good singing, but you need more than a ½ stack Marshall (or what it is you use) and to crank that baby up... Looking forward to more uploads...
Thanks for the cool comments. Steve uses a 100 watt 1/2 Stack. But he hardly gets the chance to really crank it up very often. He says he'd really need 2 or 3 stacks to get the sound right. That's too much volume for most of these clubs.
Two stacks are enough to get some nice feedback going. In any case, stop by my little Hendrix beacon and check out my Red House playlist, I bet you can pick up on something there to add to your own version as a variety. Peace...
Wow...what more can I say? Steve Webb & EXP leave me awestruck much the same way whenever I hear a great Hendrix performance.
Steve's not your average (or even above average) guitarist trying to play one of Jimi's tunes. Those guys sound artificial; Steve does not.
Jimi's songs as interpreted by Steve in his inimitable Hendrixian fashion is fresh & awe-inspiring; the Hendrixian spirit flowing from his heart straight to his fingers. His Strat's tone is Jimi to the core.
Nice comment. Steve said it's loosely structured, similarly to Jimi's San Diego version, with a couple of licks from San Diego and a lick or two from Jimi's Ottawa, Canada 68, and the rest is mostly improvised, as Steve says, to try to sound like Jimi as much as possible, even though it's impossible.
