1. Almost everyone played on realms/ladder, which required online connectivity. Ladder rewarded players with ladder-specific rune words and uniques. So Diablo 2 was 99% online, and this game is a modern game, where everyone has internet nowadays.

2. The AH won't change anything because people did that in Diablo 2 with either real money or player-driven currency. So again, this doesn't change anything except for the fact that you can now safely buy your stuff without any risk to scammers.
