  • The actual part 4 begins in 16:10.

  • Great stuff. Wish they'd done a sequence on the tube map though. That was one of the most innovative aspects of the Underground and a design classic copied throughout the world.

  • part 3 and part 4 are the same?

  • really interesting documentary, thanks for uploading. I am a linguist, never had nothing to do with engineering but somehow I am keen on London's Tube history :) loved it, thanks!

  • Thanks for the upload. I used to ride the Tube as a kid and have always been fascinated by it.

    Thanks this is great!

  • Slightly annoying that you have to skip half of a couple of the videos to find where you left off but otherwise very good

  • What IS that thing on that guy's head!??!?!?!!

  • Part 4 is the same as part 3 :(

  • It surprises me that the underground trains are still operated by a driver when in fact where I live in, Vancouver, Canada our Skytrain system has no drivers!! The system is operated by a computer instead!

  • @triky808 We also have the DLR (Doclands light railway) here in London that is operated by a computer. Also a couple of London underground lines have Automatic train operation (ATO) but still have drivers to operate the doors.

  • @djscraig1 Jubilee, Central, W&C and Victoria have ATO.

  • @triky808 AFAIK they are driven by people in command center. Something like remote controlled car.

  • @triky808 Have you ever considered the age of London Underground whereas the Skytrain is a very recent development. ATO lines like Victoria line are already highly automated but someone has to check if the way is clear. In the seventies numerous automated systems with drivers were build (e.g. Washington Metrorail, the "U-Bahn" systems at Munich and Vienna, Atlantas MARTA system etc.). These were built within a decade or two and are identically equipped throughout the system.

  • @ZappoZampani

    Thanks for all the info!!

  • @triky808 Driverless systems need the computer to enforce the timetable and to make sure the way is clear. Many systems use platform screen doors which are very expensive and disruptive to install during a running service. Basically these systems are derived from the ATO systems with driver which in turn were based on cab signalling techniques like Pennsylvainia RR's pulse code system (London's Victoria line although the recent upgrade plan will modernize it) or the german LZB system.

  • @triky808 There driverless systems without platform screen doors at Lyon, France and Nuremberg, Germany. The system used in Nuremberg even allows mixed operation with conventionally driven trains - converting an entire line on a busy system like the tube is very difficult. But this is very recent development and it took more than four years longer to implement - not exactly mainstream right now but nevertheless considered an interesting concept to ease transformation of existing networks.

  • @triky808 very much like the London DLR then

  • @triky808 yes, completely retarded. It's because the unions refuse to allow driverless trains, and because Britain is a communist country , we always allow unions to dictate how the country is run. So we still have drivers on trains, so they can regularly go on strike to increase their already-bloated salaries. There are always at least 2 strikes per year, one at Christmas, to inflict maximum disruption on shoppers and business, and the other in the summer, generally around the August holiday.

  • Fascinating video of the history of the London Underground one of oldest and advanced subway systems in the world. TTC in Toronto, ON, Canada could learn from this because I want to ride the L.U. on my 2nd visit to England and maybe live there.

  • great documentary! i'm not from London but i now know a lot of stuff about the history of the London's Tube!

  • But Parts 3 and 4 are the same. Which is missing??

  • Usually i dont like polluting inventions, but i am impressed by the poineered tubes construction and the effort kept on it, which has lead England to be in one of the stable top position atleast until now 21st century. (for nearly 200 years)

  • ahh and thank you very much for posting this by the way!

  • Wow, there is nothing like the underground here in Calfironia....I go to London frequently and it never ceases to fascinate me how well developed the public transport is. I hear that Londoners complain about the tube a lot because of the delays, well, try having nearly no public transport at all!

  • @Alduflo93 guess it works over there that your oil industry controlled government want u in your car burning gass all the time rather than using public transport interesting

  • why is part 4 just a stinking repeat of part 3? what? the last minute is new? this was quite worthless! If whoever can't put up 4 completely different parts, then why bother at all? Plus part two was a repeat of part one, with a couple of minutes new.YUCK!

  • What year was this made? and why have you got the same part twice?

  • Thanks for uploading these videos.

  • this is the same as part 3

  • Ottawa (Canada) sucks...we just have buses, no underground

  • Fuck you! The OC ROCKS!

  • interestin shit man....... london 4 life!

  • Great doco - thanks for posting.

  • WHOA Now this is what I CALL history

  • Sitting in California, nothing on TV and viola' here is a great story.

  • its the same as 3

  • Thank you for putting that up.

  • its like the 3 part.

  • I can't wait till I move to London! Thank you!

  • Ive watched this loads of times within the last 2 months and I keep on forgetting the facts and figures! Still though, its a pleasure to watch! Entertaining and interesting everytime! I don't understand why I find it so! Theres a certain romanticism, and deep cultural significance about it!
