Actually, even a nuke is a very very bad idea. Because then you get a "shotgun" effect.

It's better to use a nuke to 'nudge' the asteroid, or better yet, move something up there to push or pull it. Yes, it's possible. Scientists are going to do it with an asteroid passing pretty close to earth in a few years.

It isn't going to hit us, but it's coming fucking close. Below our satellites! So we're doing it just to be safe. ;)
